Chapter 21- The decision.
Violet sat alone in the TV room of the safe house. She couldn’t go outside, or at least she felt that she couldn’t. The grounds were nothing but grass and mud, the only paved surface was a the driveway. She didn’t think her wheelchair would cope at all over the unpaved ground.
The TV was nothing but news. The news of Metroville was becoming increasingly bleak. The crime rate was spiking. Yesterday it began with banks in the city was raided. The police and the Supers only caught a fraction of those involved. The crimes had continued through the night, growing steadily more varied, turning into everything from carjacking to armed robbery of the local minni-marts. Now, the dawn had brought more crime; more robberies, more stolen cars and now fires, assaults and muggings. This was Psychewave’s doing, she didn’t know how but she knew that it was him. He had gained more power than anyone could have imagined. How could anyone hope to stop him.
There was a sound behind her. Agent Price and a doctor came into the room. Violet wanted them to go away, but knew that they wouldn’t. She would have left the room, but they would have stopped her.
“Violet.” Mirage began. “This is Dr. Munroe. He’d like to speak to you about your treatment.”
“What treatment?” Violet snapped. “I don’t need your pity *mirage*.” She made sure there was venom in the pronunciation of her old villain name. “And I don’t want it. ‘Oh, let’s help the poor little cripple. She’ll be really happy because we’re just giving her some attention.’ Well you can JUST STICK IT UP YOUR…”
“VIOLET!” Mirage yelled as loudly as she could. There was rage in her eyes but she was trying her best to remain calm. “Perhaps you should hear the doctor out before you finish that sentence.”
Violet glared angrily, but stayed silent. He doctor took this as a good thing and knelt down to speak to her. “Now, Violet.” He began gently. “I can’t imagine how much of a shock all of this has been to you, but you should try and be hopeful. With our physiotherapy sessions we are confident that you will regain much of your mobility. You don’t have to be reliant on this wheelchair forever. You may be able to walk again.”
Violet remained silent. For her the news came as a bit of a bitter pill to swallow. She had thought that she would be in the chair for the rest of her life. She thought that Psychewave had broken her completely. Back in the city the doctors had tried to bring up this subject before, but she hadn’t wanted to hear. She had sent them away as soon as they had brought up the subject of the chair and hadn’t given them a chance to explain anything. There was hope that she might walk again. Then her negative mind took control again. “ ‘may be able to walk again?’ you say. ‘regain some of my mobility.’ only Some?”
The doctor nodded his head. “It was quite a trauma that your spine was put through. There has been some damage to the nerves. It’s impossible to say how much motion you will regain; it differs from person to person. But we are confident that with your Super ability of accelerated healing you will regain the use of your legs.”
“But only SOME use. Not ALL.” She pressed, her tone was dripping with depression. The doctor didn’t want to say anything else, but he didn’t think she would let him go without an answer. He had to give in and talked. “It is…Highly unlikely, that you will regain 100% of your mobility.”
Violet gripped the wheels of her chair and forced her way past them. “I think I’ve heard all I want to hear.” She muttered angrily. The doctor tried to say more but Mirage stopped him.
“Let her go. She just needs some time to get her head around everything.”
“We can’t delay for too long.” The doctor said in a low voice. “The longer we leave her recovery the harder it will be. The sooner we start the physio, the more of her mobility she will regain.”
“She just needs a little time.” Elizabeth said sadly.
Violet wheeled herself away as quickly as she possibly could. But soon her arms began to hurt and she had to stop. She was in the library, she couldn’t believe this place had a library. It was in a corner of the building, two of the four walls were made of glass. The day was turning into the early evening but night was a long way off yet. She was glad that she wouldn’t be in a chair for the rest of her life, but the news was just as bad. Now matter what, she would never be good enough, never be strong enough to be Vanisher again. Vanisher would be some half-dead thing inside her for the rest of her life. She would have to live on, wanting to be a Super but unable to do so. She remembered what she her life was like before she had become a Super. She would live on in misery.
That was the true power that Psychewave held. It wasn’t the mind control or the telekinesis but it was the evil ability to destroy everything he came into contact with, everything he wanted he ultimately ruined. He wanted to honour his mother’s memory and he was destroying that, he wanted the city and now he was destroying that and he’d wanted Violet in body and mind and he’d destroyed her; or as close as possible while keeping her alive.
Violet fought against her tears. She wouldn’t cry, not over him. But it was hard. His evil voice ran through her head. ‘You shall live in disgrace and dishonour; beaten and broken.’
Just the thought made her hurt more than the injuries themselves. She had never thought such Malice was possible. She had defeated him and destroyed his plans and he had all but destroyed her. Psychewave had known exactly what he had been doing; he had let her, Violet, live but he had killed Vanisher.
Staring out at that wide landscape, the lush green grass, the mountains with their many trails and the mystery at their peeks, the sunlight shimmered off the surface of the lake. This place was an artists dream. The government seemed to be of the opinion that if you were going to hide then you had to hide in style.
Violet sighed and looked to the floor. All she wanted was to be alone with her shame and she was trapped here with people she could not escape. She had to get away from them. Had to get away from all their false smiles, cheap sympathy and shameless pity. To do that she had to do one thing. Her goal had become clear.
To be continued.
