Chapter 22- Dark morning.

He was still in bad shape, still too tired from the battles of before. His energy was depleted almost immediately. He was drained before he’d even started but he had no choice, to hell with the weakness.

Bob charged full speed and tackled the guy, he went down and stayed down, merely unconscious. The shock of the impact went up his spine and exploded in his skull, he felt dizzy and his vision grew dim but he fought against it, there was still one more to go. He was gone but not forgotten. There was no strength, or perhaps it was a lack of will, to chase after him. No doubt he would surface later, in this chaos no criminal remained hidden for long. He was gone but not forgotten.

In the distance there was the screech of a cars tyres skidding along the road and speeding away. That would be the guy that got away. But he had caught one, one was better than nothing.

Mr. Incredible had stopped a jewellery store robbery, the guys had automatic weapons; heavy duty for such a small job. It had been hard to bring them down without getting shot; he couldn’t afford time off to heal, not with this crime wave sweeping the city. The jewels were safe, that was the important thing.

The store owner was tied up in a corner. Mr Incredible came over to free him. Instead of just snapping the ropes he carefully untied the guy. Bob didn’t have time to wait for the police to arrive, he would have to re-use the ropes and tie up this criminal to make sure he didn’t get away.
“Thank you Mr Incredible.” The guy said as he pulled the gag from his mouth.
“Just doing my job.” Bob muttered. “The police will be here as soon as possible.” He walked off and left the store.

The Incredimobile; his car, was waiting down the street. The radio was set to the police bandwaves and a constant stream of calls were coming through. Bob sat in the front seat for a few minutes, rubbing at his eyes furiously, they hurt. He glanced in the rear-view mirror, they were bloodshot. Two days of stubble was on his chin and his skin was pale and looked sickly from a lack of sleep.

Two days ago a crime wave had hit the city. It had started small, just bank robberies, but it had grown steadily worse with each passing day. Car jackings, muggings, arson, robberies of many different types, from homes to businesses; the list was growing all the time. The public were becoming scared to leave their homes and only the never ending efforts of the Supers and the Police were giving people the feeling of safety, however small it was. But Bob hadn’t been home in two days. He hadn’t seen Helen, Dash or Jack-jack in all that time. He slept in the car for only an hour at a time, gathering a total of four or five hours a day. His strength was fading, not is Super strength, not the physical stuff; but his mental one. He couldn’t keep up this effort forever. He was thinking that a few days would be too much. It was endless, just crime after crime; criminal after criminal. As soon as he caught a bad guy there would just be another two waiting around the corner. For the first time since he had become Mr Incredible he felt that his efforts weren’t making a difference.
“All available units.” Hissed the radio. “Proceed directly to fourth and main; reports of an explosion at the Insureacare office building; several people are trapped inside.”

Bob started the engine. He wasn’t more than a few miles from the place. He could see the black smoke start to rise up into the sky. His car would get him there in minutes with the turbo boost. He hoped the rocket had some fuel left.

*******

The building was a ruthless inferno. Everything from the fifth floor to the eighth upwards was on fire and the blaze was rising. Most of the employees seemed to be standing across the street; but the radio had said that there were people inside. There were sirens in the distance that sounded like fire engines but it looked like Bob was first on the scene.

Bob screeched to a halt and jumped out of the car, he could hear a few screams over the flames, there were people trapped on a few of the upper floors. He would have to get up there and help them all to get out; It would be too dangerous to run up each one of the floors past the flames and he couldn’t jump high enough to clear the flames. He would have to get to the tenth floor at least.
“INCREDIBLE.” Yelled a voice from above. Bob felt a smile try and find its way to his face. From the sky above Frozone slid down to the ground on a bridge of ice that melted away behind him.

Frozone looked as bad as Bob felt. His goatee beard was messy and the rest of his face was covered in stubble. His suit was grimy, and there was a whiff about him. He was slouching slightly, he looked tired.

But there was no time to exchange pleasantries. They had to get the people out of that building and fast. “I can hold off the fire buddy.” Frozone said.
“We still need to get inside.” Bob said. “People are trapped in there.”
“No problem.” Frozone aimed his hands downwards and built up a large column of ice. He built them up, more and more, like a set of icy stairs leading toward the building. He couldn’t get them too close or the flames would melt them but he managed to place one close enough for Bob to jump through a window.
“See you inside buddy.” He yelled as he leapt into the air and started to slide around, spiralling upward on a bridge of ice. Bob still had no idea how his old friend managed to skate upwards, but Frozone knew how.

Leaping from step to step Bob jumped as hard as he could and crashed through a window of the eleventh floor of the building. Smoke billowed out behind him. The heat was intense and the air was choking. The smoke was growing thick with black smoke and Bob coughed as it invaded his lungs. The fire couldn’t be more than a floor or two down, he would have to work fast to save anyone on this floor.

Outside Frozone was sliding up and down; shooting ice at the flames, trying his best to extinguish them. He couldn’t come inside, his powers used the water in the air and the heat sapping away all the moisture. Bob had learnt that one the hard way.
“IS ANYONE HERE?” Bob shouted as loudly as he could. He heard coughing and a weak yell. There was someone on this floor. “KEEP MAKING NOISE.” Bob yelled. The shouting brought on a coughing fit. “I’LL TRY AND FIND YOU.” With a swing of his fist he smashed though the thin plaster walls of the offices and ran through from room to room.

The fire couldn’t be more than a floor below. The smoke was getting thicker and he could hear the roar of the flames growing louder all the time. Bob smashed through another wall and found the source of the sound. It was a small man in a business suit, he was huddled in a corner and looked very frightened. Bob recognised him at once as his last Boss, Mr Huff. But the little man didn’t know that, he only saw Mr Incredible.
“Come with me sir. I’ll get you to safety.” He Didn’t wait for Huff to move, he grabbed the little man and held him in his arms and ran for the nearest window. They smashed through three plasterboard walls, trashing cubicles along the way. The window was ahead, Bob held the small man in one hand and shattered the window with his other fist. The glass shattered and fell away. “FROZONE.” Bob yelled.

His friend slid into view and gave them the way out. He zapped a large and thick ice slide down to the ground. Bob put Mr Huff down onto the slide. “I hope you’re insured.” He said to the man before pushing him hard and sending him sliding down to the ground. There wasn’t even time to see if he landed safely; there might be other people in the building and Bob turned and ran back inside. He was grateful that he knew the building so well. He prayed that he’d be able to stay ahead of the fire.

**************

Bob and Lucius sat n the Incredimobile five miles away from the scene. They had done all they could, the fire crews managed to arrive in time to deal with the worst of the flames and stop the whole building going up. Everyone had been saved, a rare victory in these crime filled times where so many people managed to get away.

The two men drank at bottles of water and tried to regain some of their composure and strength before they raced off to the next job. There were plenty to choose from, more crimes were coming through the police radio already.
“What’s happening?” Bob muttered. He sniffed at his clothes and shook his head, they stank heavily of smoke.
“I don’t know Bob.” Lucius said. He pulled back his mask and rubbed his eyes then sipped at his water. “It’s just chaos out there. No matter what I do there’s just more…” He trailed off, he sounded exhausted. “I haven’t been home all night and when I was at home I only slept for an hour.”
Bob sighed and drank down the last of his water. His throat felt like sandpaper. All he wanted to do sleep.

“All units, All units. Tour bus robbery in progress.” came through the radio. It seemed sleep was a long way off. Bob sighed and looked to Frozone, who was slipping his mask back on.
“Want a ride?” Bob pressed. Lucius shook head and opened the car door.
“There’s more going on, all hands are needed everywhere. I’ll see you later Bob.”

He jumped onto a slide of ice and took off out of sight. Bob started up the car and drove off to try and deal with that tour bus robbery. Too many criminals and never enough time.

To be continued.
