White and Black Pearls - Chapter 20

Chapter Twenty

“That’s where it ends,” Bill murmured, picking at a hole on the knee of his pants. “That’s the last anybody I’ve spoken with heard from her, that was the last I saw her too. Davy Jones promised her harm and suffering at his hands if he ever saw her again… and the battle began.”

Will nodded. That battle’s weather, the skies… they’d held no favor for any man, they had simply been filled with danger and turmoil. But still, the story seemed so incomplete. “That’s it?” he asked with frustration in his voice. “That’s how it ends between Jack and Celeste?” He found himself hoping for a happier ending on Jack’s behalf, and was surprised at that. His usual attitude towards Jack was that the man could hang, but Will reasoned with himself that he really didn’t wish that kind of unresolved sorrow on anybody. He wasn’t the kind of man to learn of another’s suffering and think ‘good, he deserves it’ about the situation. He felt sympathy for Davy now that hadn’t been there before, and more for Jack, who hadn’t even received a fraction as much resolve to the situation that Jones had upon his plunge into the sea during the battle. In some way Jones had gone back into Calypso’s arms for his watery death, but Jack had… nothing. He lifted his head and frowned at his father. “That doesn’t even answer why the stars fall tonight,” he realized aloud, finding himself suddenly and unnervingly worried about Jack.

“I don’t know what is making them fall,” Bill said as he pushed himself to a stand, glancing over at the horizon where the sun’s rays were painting the sky bright colours. “It’s morning, Will. Put it out of your head. The only thing I know for sure is that she weeps, as I told you earlier. Do not try and call her here. Do not bring her into your life. You know now what happens when you call upon the gods to put their hands on your life.”

“But if it weren’t for her interference, that heart wouldn’t have existed to stab in the first place, I wouldn’t be here, alive…”

“If it weren’t for her interference, Davy Jones wouldn’t have struck to kill you in the first place!” Bootstrap said roughly. “Will, let it be!” He was getting upset; he couldn’t say he knew his son entirely well but he could see ideas developing in his son’s head.

Will couldn’t help but feel that it wasn’t as cruel as his father and Jones made it out to be. Some good had come of her help, hadn’t it? Some lives had changed for the better. “Don’t get upset father,” he finally replied with a quieter resolve in his voice. “Even if I did call out to her, it isn’t likely that she’ll respond. You said so yourself, and she told that to Davy Jones. If she wouldn’t answer his pleas she surely wouldn’t answer mine.”

“What if she came to you and she was the one seeking your help instead?” a third voice inquired casually.

Will spun about with sword drawn, but the point of his weapon wavered as his eyes widened. “Celeste,” he whispered breathlessly.

“No!” Bootstrap Bill wailed.
