Chapter 23: Omen
The first sign she received was the protestors outside the clinic. * I should've turned around right then* Mini thinks as she awaited her name to be called. The check-in was quick, after the paperwork was filled out and the fee was paid the nurse sent Mini to the waiting area with the rest of the females waiting to be called. She takes a seat next to a girl that couldn't have been more than 15 to 16 years old. Mini notices how nervous the girl looks, she's fidgety and looks like she want's to cry. This makes Mini uneasy, just when she thinks it can't get any worst the room goes dark and a movie begins to play in front of them. It begins to explain the procedure, how long it takes, what anesthetics are used and what to do after the TOP (termination of pregnancy). *OK, I can handle this* she speaks too soon. The next pictures show what happens to the babies that are terminated. Gruesome pictures are shown, Mini feels her stomach turn, and the fact she hadn't eaten anything didn't help, her stomach is weak, she needs to throw up. After a while she simply stops watching. *How can I do such a horrible thing to this innocent child?* She feels guilt and her hearts is telling her to leave. She looks to the young girl next to her and the poor thing is sobbing and tears are streaming down her face ~ that's all the encouragement she needs. Mini getr thr things and literally runs out of there. Tears formed in her eyes at the thought of what she had been prepared to do. She reaches her car in front and has to stop to catch her breath, now she's sobbing too. She closes her eyes shut trying to shake the horrifying pictures from before out of her head, a hand is placed on her shoulder and she quickly turns around. Her eyes widen when she sees Vince standing there with fretful eyes. Her fragile statusesuses her to reach towards him and hug him ~ he embraces her tight, silent tears in his eyes.
"I couldn't do it V, I can't" she explains between sobs. Vince shushes her, caressing her hair trying to calm her down.
"It's OK, it's going to be OK, let's just get out of here" he helps her to her car, leaving his behind. Once at Mini's house, Vince sits her down on her sofa, her legs are still shaky and her complexion is whiter than bed sheets. He goes to the kitchen and brings her a cup of water. She quickly drinks it; this seems to get her voice back.
"How did you find me?" she asks.
"A birdie told me" he says with a smile, she nods.
"We need to talk Mini, about you, me and this child" her eyes sting and she closes them again, trying to find the words. She knows she should tell him the truth, she should tell him what happened to her, but it's easier said than done. * One truth at a time * she thinks.
"I lied to you Vince. When I told you I slept with someone else I lied, there was never anyone else but you" * Oh God, he's going to hate me * she thinks. Vince can't believe his ears ~ Why would she do that? All this anguish he's been through for what, a lie. He sits next to her, his eyes never leaving her.
"What are you saying to me? You made all that up? Why?" his voice wounded.
" I needed to push you away and that was the only way I saw how." Her voice more calm now. At this moment it doesn't matter to her if he turns around and never speaks to her again ~ he needs to know the truth, he deserves the truth.
"Vince, there are some things about my past, that you don't know... Things that I'm ashamed to tell you. And those things are the reason why I made the decision that I made, to lie to you and to have the abortion, but I'm gonna have this child and If you wanna turn around and never look back I'll understand." Vince cee tee the pain in her eyes, she'd definitely been through something but he can't force her to tell him.
"There's no way I'm walking out on you and my child, you know that." He raises his eyebrows in question.
"I know, but I don't want you to be with me just because of this baby" she looks away scared of what his answer will be.
"Mini I still love you. I can't just turn my feelings off that quickly. I want us to be a family, you, me and my son." She looks up at him surprised, relieved.
"Son? What if it's a girl?" she asks. Vince smiles and holds her hand.
"Then she'll be my little girl, but it's a boy trust me" he winks at her. She stays silent for a second contemplating him ~ appreciating him.
"I'll never lie to you again Vince, I promise. One day I'll tell you the about the scars in my heart." She confesses. He reaches over and puts his arms around her, placing a kiss on her forehead.
"I'll be here, baby. I'm not going anywhere" they remain in each other's arms for the rest of the night.
