Chapter 23- Small steps

Violet lay on her back in the gym of the safe house. The doctor was kneeling by her side and her wheelchair was next to him. “Now just take your time.” He jabbed her foot hard with the end of his pen. “Now you’re sure you feel that?”

Violet only felt the lightest of brushes. “Yes.” She said impatiently. The doctor knew she was holding something back, but decided not to press her. She had only agreed to these physio sessions a couple of days ago.
“Right then. Just take your time and try and wiggle your toes.”
“That’s all?” Violet glared at him angrily. “That’s why you dragged me onto the floor. I could have done that from my chair.”
“It’s better for you to lie flat, best for circulation and so forth. Now, please, try and wiggle your toes. Small steps…so to speak.”

Violet looked down at her feet and concentrated hard on her feet. Looking down at them wasn’t easy from her flat position. All through her head she thought ‘Toes move.’ again and again. There was nothing at first, her legs remained as dead as ever. Slowly though, as the thought rang through her head and the signal ran down her body she felt something; a tingling. It was small, but rushed down her foot and when it reached her toes they twitched just once. The doctor looked astonished, and then a smile spread over his face.
“That is excellent. Do you think you’ll be able to do that again, more than once?”

Stirred by her brief success Violet concentrated again. The toes wiggled together, all five toes curling and uncurling at once. The Doctor smiled as Violet continued, slowly but surely wiggled them all. Then her whole foot stopped dead and Violet’s angry look returned.
“What’s wrong?” He pressed.
“I can’t move my foot.” She growled. “I’m trying to wiggle my ankle but I can’t.”
“We need to take things slowly.” The doctor said. “You’ve suffered a severe trauma. The nerves have been damaged and need time to repair themselves. In a sense you are teaching yourself to walk again. But you need to work at your bodies pace, your movements can and will become more complicated as the nerves repair themselves.”
“So wiggling my toes is all I can manage?” Violet said looking up at him. She didn’t sund happy with this news.
“Only for the moment. Who knows what tomorrow might bring. Shall we practise some more?”
“I think we’re done here.” Violet snapped. “Give me the chair.”

He gave in. If she wasn’t willing to work with him then there was nothing he could do. He wheeled the chair to her side and helped Violet sit up. Then Violet just shooed him away. She had this chair so she needed to learn how to handle it herself. It wasn’t easy; a terrible strain on her arms as she dragged the dead weight of her legs as she pulled herself up into the seat of the wheelchair and had to sit there for a couple of seconds, trying to catch her breath. Dead weight was the worst to shift and lift.

She didn’t say a word and rolled past him out of the gym and into the hallway of the house. Tony was at the end of the hall, he hadn’t been waiting for her, just passing-by. Tony had been avoiding Violet since she had yelled at him to leave her alone. Violet was grateful that he had done so. As cruel as her words were, she’d believed all of them. Tony shouldn’t be with a cripple. Even if she walked again she would still be crippled in another way. He shouldn’t feel obligated to stay with her out of sympathy so she had relieved him of his obligation. Once they got back to the city they would go their separate ways and he would find a person he deserved; a whole person.

Tony wanted to speak with her, but was fully aware of how Violet wasn’t in the mood to hear whole speeches from people. He wanted to tell her everything he was feeling, that he didn’t care whether she was in a wheelchair or not. He didn’t care what she said to anyone, least of all him, he would stand by her side not out of sympathy but just because of love for her. He loved her and had decided long ago, shortly after meeting her, that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her and it wasn’t because she was a Super, it was because she was Violet, just Violet. He wanted her, just her, for who she was; good and the bad parts.

He wanted to say all of those things, but doubted she would let him get to the end of the first sentence. He sighed and said nothing, holding his tongue and tolerating the burning hole it was leaving in his chest. He walked away, heading outside, knowing that she didn’t go outside.

Violet wheeled past the place where he had been without giving him a second glance. She wanted to be alone for a the rest of the day. She felt so angry at the doctor, putting her through so much effort just for a little toe wiggle and then expecting that she should be happy. She used to be able to do back flips, if absolutely necessary, and a large variety of karate moves worthy of any black belt. She had taken down more criminals in a year than most cops managed in five. She used to be at a physical peek others could only dream of and yet she was supposed to find happiness at a little toe wiggle. That doctor just didn’t understand her at all.

***********

Tony sat outside with his head in his hands. He was missing his home and his family; and the events that the news were talking about everyday were not making him feel any better. He was worried about his mum and dad and yet he couldn’t contact them; for their own safety. He thought that when Violet arrived that it would provide at least a distraction from the anxiety; but she was so cold and closed off it only made him feel more alone. He had expected just one smile, or friendly word. Instead she pushed him away with cruel words and cold actions. He felt worse for thinking such things, she had been injured and needed time to recover she needed to heal after what had happened to her and here he was with his selfish thoughts.

“Tony?” A kind voice interrupted him and he looked up in shock. Mirage was approaching. She sat down by his side and looked out at the landscape. “Are you alright?”

Tony stayed silent for almost a full minute, a very long minute. He just didn’t know if he could put it into words that anyone else could understand when he barely understood what he was feeling. “That’s not Violet.” He said finally. “I don’t know who that is, but it’s not the girl that I love.”

Elizabeth put a hand on his shoulder and nodded slightly. She only knew Violet as an acquaintance, But she knew that she was different, that she had been changed by what happened to her.
“I’m trying to understand.” Tony continued. “But I cant…It’s just so hard. If she was even just a tiny bit like her old self…but…I‘m horrible. She‘s in that chair and all I can think of is how *I* want her to be and nothing about what she might actually need or want.”
“You’re not horrible.” Mirage said, rubbing a hand up and down his back. She didn’t know what she was doing, it just felt like the right thing to do. “You just wish that Violet was her old self. Her old, strong, vibrant self. And seeing her the way she is know, and knowing how she was before; I wish it too. You’re not horrible; just human. Just a person that loves her.”

Tony stayed silent, he still felt down but he did feel a little better. Mirage was right, he did love Violet and hated seeing her this way. He wanted her to be happy, to be the person he knew and loved once again. “Thanks.” He said as sweetly as he could. He slowly raised himself up to his feet and walked off toward the lake.

Mirage stayed there on the porch, looking out at the landscape. She had been a little angry at Dickers when he told her to stay here, any agent could have stayed at the safe house and watched over Tony and Violet. But now she understood his decision; they needed someone that they knew, even if she was a casual acquaintance; someone they could associate with and feel friendship toward, however small. With Elizabeth around they could feel safe and at home here. Rick would have been a better choice, he knew the Parr family better than she did; but with Psychewave on the loose the head of department would be needed where the emergency was. He had his mission and Mirage had hers; she needed to keep Violet and Tony safe and had to do her best to help Violet recover. The latter was the hardest task; Violet’s road of recovery was so dreadfully long.

To be continued.
