Chapter 22 - Alone

Oria watched as the last crate was loaded and cries went out over the ship for it being ready to sail. It was nearly night, the moon casting silvery light in contrast with the dying reds and gold’s of the sun. She watched as Jack stalked down the plank holding a sheaf of papers, her dismissal forms. He held them out to her without meeting her gaze, “You’ve been dismissed from the crew of the Black Pearl for insubordination, deception and betrayal.” Oria took the sheets from him and glanced down at them briefly before tossing them over her shoulder into the ocean.

“You needed them to get a job on another pirate vessel.” Jack whispered watching them sink.

“I’m not going to serve on another vessel.” Her voice was low as she watched him diligently avoiding any part of her with his eyes, “Goodbye Jack.” He glanced up at that and met her gaze slowly but this time it was she who couldn’t hold it and looked away. He nodded and headed back onto the ship without a backwards glance as the boarding plank was raised and the sails deployed. Oria watched as the ship slowly pulled away from the harbour and headed off into the open ocean her heart crushing itself painfully.

:/

Jack was lost in his own mind as they pulled away, part of him was celebrating being free again and sailing but the dominant part was screaming and kicking with all its might… and it HURT. He fought back the loss he felt and brushed away the feeling of a tear, it was nothing, it had all been a lie anyway so what was there to miss he argued with himself mentally. Gibbs stepped up alongside him, his gaze fixed back at the port of Tortuga.

“Are you sure this is right?” Jack didn’t even glance at him, Gibbs continued regardless, “I never thought I’d say this… but… I think she should be here. I don’t care about what she said Jack, looks and body language tell more than spoken words. Even if she doesn’t actually love you like you love her she feels something god damn close to it. You can see it Jack.” Jack glared at him, he was not making this any easier, couldn’t he see that she couldn’t be trusted. Gibbs looked at him harshly, “Sometimes people say things they don’t mean to protect that person. Jack… we know hardly anything about her, we don’t know what she’s doing. Are you that willing to just give up? After all you’ve been through, after all she’s been through. She’s never tried to kill you except for the Isle de Muerta and even that she staged to get you out alive and safe.”

“I don’t know anymore Gibbs.” Jack whispered to avoid the crew’s attention. Gibbs glared at him and punched his shoulder lightly.

“Jack stop being such a fool get in that long boat and go back and get her!” Jack glanced at the man and watched him for a few seconds. He shook his head and turned the wheel slightly, “Jack… you’ll regret it for the rest of your life if you don’t. Any fool can see she’s only got eyes for you. You’re the only one she trusts for Christ’s sake!” Jack shook his head again resolutely.

:/

Oria watched the Pearl fade into the night, it didn’t take long with all the mist coiling in the bay, Davy Jones was near by she could feel him. She sighed and ran her fingers shakily through her hair, slowly she turned away and headed into Tortuga. She was going to have to find a ship that would be ready to take her to Tia Dalma’s hut or at least take her part of the way in that direction. Either that or one that she could commandeer.

Glancing around the dock it didn’t take a genius to realise that her best chance would be in the morning. The ships were silent their bulks heaving gently with the swells of the ocean beneath them. A hand rested lightly on her shoulder, “You looking for work love, I’ll pay well.” She brushed it off and continued walking towards the raucous of the town centre.

“Not tonight maybe another night.” Oria whispered her thoughts not really on the conversation.

“Shame, I’m only in port tonight.” She glanced back at the man, he smiled pleasantly but she shook her head, he nodded with a sigh, “I’ll keep an eye out for you love.” Oria turned away and headed into the centre.

She quickly changed her mind seeing the riots already underway and headed instead for the beach. Easing herself down into the sand she leant back against a palm and gazed out over the ocean. Stranded once again only this time there was no sweet little Will to ride to her rescue, bless him too innocent for his own good, just like Jack when she had first met him. This time she was alone and against the world, she knew she could just pack it in and call on Jones, he would be more than willing to take her back onto his ship early. After all it had been nearly thirteen years. His victim count would have suffered drastically in her absence.

What did she really want? Was this all going to be worth it in the end? So many questions and even more doubts, two failures she’d endured. Granted this time there was more at stake, this time there was more than her involved, this time she could end up being as tortured as Jones himself.

Standing back up she sat closer to the water and watched as the waves broke against her boots quietly. She felt so cold, as if she was sat in the middle of an ice cavern rather than a Caribbean beach and all because she had denied herself the luxury of telling the truth for once in her life. Not that she had actually had any choice, if she had told the truth the consequences could… no, ‘would’ have been catastrophic. A jacket dropped about her shoulders and someone sat down next to her silently, she didn’t bother glancing at them expecting it to be the random sailor from the docks or some other fool testing the length of their life.

“That’s a real hang dog expression, what you done that deserves such a face?” Oria didn’t look up, she recognised the voice but presumed it to just be the sailor and ignored the feeling of familiarity.

“I lied about something important which I can’t tell you because obviously I didn’t tell the person I was supposed to tell but wasn’t if you get my drift.” An arm draped itself about her shoulders and she shrugged it off quickly turning to glare at the offending person with the intruding arm. Didn’t he realise how close to death he was?
