Chapter 23 – Plans Revealed
Her heart stopped as she stared in disbelief, “Jack?” He smiled faintly and didn’t meet her gaze his eyes focusing on his boots, “What are you doing here?” What was it with this man and returning? Why couldn’t he just leave well alone, she shrugged the jacket off and stood up quickly. Turning on her heel she headed into Tortuga, Jack leapt up to chase after her till remembering his jacket, he turned with a curse and scooped it up before chasing after her shouting her name.
Oria ducked down a side-alley and rapped smartly on a wooden door, it slid open and she ducked inside. The smaller woman locked the door after her with a curious glance, “I didn’t think you’d be back to pay me for at least a fortnight if you came back at all.” Oria glanced at the small whore she had persuaded to inform Jack of the key and gave a faint smile, “Mind you having that pirate was payment enough if you get my meaning.”
Oria glanced at her but chose not to retaliate, the little whore wasn’t worth it. The woman turned around and began to pull on a pair of rose satin shoes with a pointed glare at Oria, “So do you have my money or did you squander it all on convincing the rest of the whore houses to leave him well alone just so I could go in for the luxury unhindered?”
“I’ve got your money.” Oria felt in her pocket glancing suspiciously out of the window, she ducked to the side as a silhouette passed by. Dragging a coin purse out of her pocket she tossed it at the woman. She counted out her money quickly before slipping the purse under her mattress.
“How did you know he’d have me… so to speak?” Oria glared at her.
“’Cos he’d be desperate, anything would go… he would just have wanted to lose himself in any willing body. You were the first one I found so you’d do, I only needed a female, physical appearance didn’t matter hence why you were particularly applicable for this particular job.” The whore turned on her furious, Oria laughed and ducked out of the house as a pottery pitcher smashed against the door. She turned and headed down the street fighting down the laughter and focusing on avoiding Jack at all costs.

Norrington glanced down at the manacles and tugged at them frantically, he had a whole army on the Dauntless but they were under strict orders not to leave the ship at any cost. A hearty chuckle came from behind him and he struggled to glance over his shoulder, “My, my what have we here? A sailor chained to a tree?”
“Release me and I’ll pay you a fine reward!” James strained to see the man behind him who was raking over him in a very uncomfortable manner, “I’ll give you anything you want!” The man trailed a hand down his side.
“Anything?” James nodded before realising what that could entail and spluttered to change his offer. The man laughed and clamped a hand down on his shoulder boldly, “Don’t worry lad, I know what they’re doing, they strung you up here as a joke. New initiate are ya?” James nodded fiercely hoping the man would just release him and leave him be, “Ah, you’re lucky an old sea dog like me found you and not one of those queer men that live in these parts.”
“The key is fastened to my belt.” Fingers snapped it free and brusquely unclamped him from the tree. James gave a sigh of relief and rubbed his wrists gratefully, “Come with me to my ship and I’ll give you some coin for being so gracious.” The man chuckled and waved a hand absently.
“I’m not going anywhere near your ship lad, got a bounty on me head, your Commodore sees me and that’s my life over with. Does look too kindly on murderers or so I hear…” He chuckled evilly and James turned and headed for the Dauntless swiftly.
Running up the plank he stood on deck his chest heaving, “Get to arms, we’re invading this port and taking only Jack Sparrow and his wench. Anyone aiming at the girl… aim at her head or her heart. Don’t ask why just do it!” He shouted at the sailor as he frowned in confusion and jumped back at the rise in the Commodore’s voice, “Sparrow can be dead or alive but the girl must be dead! Don’t come back till you have them both!”

Oria found herself back on the beach and satisfied herself that Jack would be very unlikely to appear back on the beach when he had the whole of Tortuga to search. Slowly she eased herself back down into the sand and stretched her legs in front of her, “Did you lie?” Oria glanced back in disbelief and stared at Jack for a few moments.
“Why have you come back?” Jack sighed and sank into the sand next to her.
“Because I’m a fool, like you said all those years ago when we first met… and because I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want you around. I know you might not feel the same way towards me as I towards you and I blame myself for that. I shouldn’t have gone off with Anna-Maria, the whores when Barbossa took the Pearl and… I shouldn’t have gone off with that whore a few hours ago. I’m sorry, I came back just to say that and…” Oria sighed.
“Jack I paid that whore to lie with you.” His gaze snapped to hers in surprise.
“And why exactly would you do something like that?” Oria met his questioning gaze.
“I’ve known about the chest of Davy Jones for over ninety years. I know the location of the key, I know the heart is real… and I know what it can do. You don’t want to be trapped in Davy Jones’ hell forever, the heart can spare you that. So I obviously couldn’t tell you directly without HIM knowing, now that you have the knowledge I can divulge some of the information I have. Therefore, through underhanded payment and planning I got the location and beginning of the trail to you.” Lie, lie, lie ran through her head, there was the complication right there. Both of them needed it and it would only work for one. Her whole plan laid bare before her eyes and perfectly shielded before Jack’s. She glanced at him, he was none the wiser and he rubbed his chin thoughtfully.
“Fine… now answer my original question. Did you or did you not lie about loving me?” Oria looked away. She couldn’t lie again but to tell the truth would destroy ninety years of planning and any possibility of attempting it again should this attempt fail.
“I can’t answer that Jack.” He nodded slowly.
“That’s not a no though?” Oria glanced at him with a quirk on her lips at the twinkle in his eyes.
“It’s not a yes either. It’s an ‘I can’t answer that’.” Jack nodded with a wide grin.
“But it’s not a no?” Oria rolled her eyes.
“It’s not a no and it’s not a yes.” Jack chuckled slightly, at least there was no lie there. Without warning she pushed him under her and stood up just as fast drawing her pistol. Jack stared at the small wound in her arm from a gunshot wound and leapt up also. He paused as he spotted the double line of about twenty marksmen all with their pistols aimed at them.
Oria paused and shook her head, this wasn’t possible, how had they got so close without her realising. She glanced at Jack, he met her gaze with wide eyes, “Fire!” The second that one word was shouted both turned and ran in opposite directions away from the muskets. Jack leapt down into the docks and streaked towards his longboat at full tilt shouting whenever a shot came close to his foot.
Oria ducked down several side alleys and bounced behind a barrel as a group of soldiers ran past. Soothing her nerves she slipped back into the street and gave a gasp of shock as a hand grasped her wrist and dragged her back into the alley. A dagger was pressed to her throat quickly, “I don’t know what you are or how you came to be it but I’m willing to bet you wouldn’t recover if I slit your throat.” James hissed in her ear, he was fighting the urge to turn and run. She wasn’t natural he reminded himself, she was the devil’s work, made solely to tempt men away from good honest thoughts and into the sordid backstreets of the common man. Her hands grasped his arm as he tightened his grip about the dagger handle and pressed it tighter to her skin.
“Unfortunately you’re wrong.” She snapped his arm away from her throat wincing as the tip dragged a cut across the tender skin, “There’s absolutely nothing in this world that you can do that will end my god forsaken life. Don’t worry though I’m working on becoming mortal again, then I’ll come to you so you can have the pleasure of ending it. All right, does that suit you?” James stared dumbly as the wound on her throat closed up smoothly, “Oh stop being a goldfish for Christ’s sake.” She slammed her palm against his forehead, it snapped back and cracked his skull against the wall hard enough to knock him out without lasting damage.
Turning away she jogged down to the docks, ducking out of sight of any patrols. Her feet were greeted with the familiar creek of planks and she slowed her pace turning to walk backwards for a few steps to ensure that no one was watching her. A hand clamped over her mouth and about her waist before dragging her backwards and behind a barrel, “Don’t say anything.” Slowly the hand lowered from her mouth and she glanced back at Jack.
“You could have just tapped me on the shoulder.” She stated quietly stepping closer to him as a patrol stalked by. His hand was still wrapped about her waist and it gripped tighter as a man peered curiously at the barrels before being called away.
“I wasn’t willing to risk losing my head.” Jack whispered after he was sure there was no one close enough to hear, she smirked faintly, “Come on your coming back to the Pearl with me and no arguments.” His hand tightened about her wrist and he dragged her after him towards the long boat. She followed quietly like a child being led back home after it had tried to run away.
