Chapter 24 – What Must Be Done
“Get this ship moving. Come on you scurvy dogs, I want movement!” Jack shouted over the deck before strutting up to the helm. He glanced at Tia Dalma who stood alongside it, her fingertips resting on one of the handles and playing over the carving.
“You are going to take me home?” She whispered, smiling as she watched Jack stroke the helm lovingly. He glanced at her warily.
“First we’re going to leave the little Governor’s daughter and the boy if he deems our travels unworthy of one such as himself.” Jack announced and glanced back to where Elizabeth was sat on a barrel, her chin in her palm.
“She will not be easy to remove you know. You blamed her for this. It is her instinct to stay and see it through.” Tia announced, watching the dejected girl also as she trailed a hand over Jack’s shoulders. Jack watched the woman quietly as her fingers trailed down to his hand.

“Oria?” The soft voice crept through the cabin and infiltrated her senses slowly.
“Yes?” She whispered despondently, her eyes still unfocused. Oria frowned distractedly as someone knelt in front of her chair. His face came into view and slowly became focused. “You.” She murmured.
“Yes, me. Before we go I just…” Oria pressed a finger to his lips as she sat up sharply. Her eyes locked onto his and it was clear she was wide awake.
“You did what you had to.” She affirmed as his fingers closed around her wrist and lowered it without releasing.
“I’m sorry.” James whispered, the tips of his fingers stroking over her smooth skin soothingly. “Once I knew… once I knew what it was like. I didn’t want to.” Oria smiled faintly as if amused.
“You lost your soul to gain his heart. Foolish I concede. I know that I was the price for you to get your soul back. Kill me and you would gain redemption from his hell, one soul for my death. I know.” Oria soothed.
He sat in silence in front of her, still on his knees. “We’d best be getting going.” She whispered as she snapped her wrist free and rose from the chair swiftly. James followed her with his eyes. Oria stopped by the doorway, her hand on the handle and waited for him to join her.
Gathering himself together once more Norrington rose and joined her. He swung the door open and waited for her to go through. “You know, after what is it now? Two? Three years? I didn’t think you’d have been apologising for killing me.” Oria whispered, he smiled faintly and locked the door after them before handing her the key.
“What, I’m worthy of cabin key ownership now?” She quipped in amusement at the faint gesture of trust. The Admiral merely smiled and led the way into the town.

“You are going back to Port Royal and that is final.” Jack ordered. Elizabeth stood in front of his desk looking angrier than he had ever seen her before. She was almost bordering on Oria proportions.
“You can not just lay all the blame on me and then expect me to leave it. If this is my fault then I want to see it through and make it right again.”
“Did Tia give you a guideline on what to say?” Jack accused, he already had suspicions over Barbossa receiving a bit of aid from the woman.
“NO! I’ve not spoken to her since… since…” Elizabeth trailed off, her cheeks colouring slightly.
“You are going to Port Royal and you are going to stay there. Like a good little Governor’s daughter. Away, far away from where you can cause trouble.” Jack finalised only for Elizabeth to slam both of her hands down on the front of his desk. The pirate glared at the offending hands, noting absently how elegant those hands were even though she had been working on the Pearl. He shook himself from the reverie and truly scowled at the young woman.
“I am not leaving this ship until I have set everything back to how it was. I’ll even tell Oria the truth about what happened between us.” Jack stood up furiously.
“There was nothing between us and there was certainly no us! You lunged at me!” He shouted accusingly, it was childish even to his ears and he knew if Oria had been neutral on the issue and listening she would have burst out laughing at the ridiculousness of it. Elizabeth removed her hands from the table and wrapped them about herself comfortingly.
“Well I’m not going to apologise if that’s what you want. I did what I did because I thought it was right and I needed to know.” She hugged herself tighter and glared at Jack.
“Bit bloody late to be apologising anyway! You are going to Port Royal and you are staying there. No alternatives!” Jack ordered praying they would the last words on the issue. He wanted to sleep, get his rum, get himself drunker than half of Tortuga and sleep.
“I’m staying.”
“By the god’s woman, you’re as bad as Oria!” Jack stumbled off the rest of his rant at the mention of her name. He gritted his teeth and looked away focusing instead on a rum bottle.
