Chapter 27- Nightfall
“All units, All units; Positive sighting of Psychewave and two accomplices heading toward Metroville prison.” Bob jabbed his finger on a big red button on the dash and a large rocket strapped to the back flared up and boosted the car up to jet speeds.
This was the first time in nearly three months that Psychewave had been seen by anyone. He had started this chaos and had gone into hiding. The crime rate had spiked over 500%, the police and the Super’s had been stretched to breaking point, then when riots had broken out martial law had been declared and the military had moved in to try and restore peace. Nothing had got better, but it hadn’t become much worse. Surprisingly, despite being given the option of being able to evacuate the city, none of the Supers had left. Bob wasn’t the only one who wanted a piece of Psychewave.
***********
The prison guards were on high alert, a warning had been called ahead that the wanted super villain Psychewave was heading their way. They were dressed in full riot gear and were carrying shotguns and each one of the cells were locked down.
Outside, some of the guards were surveying the surrounding area with spot lights from the guard towers. There was nothing yet, but that only built up their tension. “There?” a guy froze the light. His pal shook his head. “That’s a bush.”
“There?”
“A tree.”
From the east tower came a bone chilling cry. “WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!” The whole building shook violently and a warning alarm ran out at an ear piercing volume. The lights centred on the yard and picked out a large thing covered in a lot of metal racing toward the building. The alarms sounded too late as the thing hit the eastern wall. The reinforced concrete wall caved in and was just blasted apart and the metal covered thing ran toward the prison building. Gunshots rang out, streaks of gold were seen flying through the air down toward the thing. Now that it was so close they could see it was a man, emphasis on the was. He was covered in thick, grey, metal that was completely undamaged by the bullets.
Suddenly the light in the west guard tower went out and over the noise of the gunfire the cries of the two guards could just be heard. A shadowed figure ran along the wall with grace and agility far above that of an Olympic gymnast. He raced along the wall and the guards to the eastern tower were momentarily dumbfounded; what was going on? The hesitation was their downfall. They were taken out just as quickly as their colleagues.
The four guard towers were taken down within minutes. Down in the yard guards flooded out of the buildings, shooting at Omega, but the bullets just ricocheted off his armour. Omega chased them down, hitting them with swings of his powerful arms, sending them flying through the air. The noise of the sirens and gunfire was deafening and their screams could barely be heard. Some of the guards turned and ran, they were all chased down in turn and taken out.
While Omega was providing the main show in the yard Alpha made his way into the building. He met no resistance, none worth mentioning, the main body of the guards were trying to take on Omega or had run away. He raced through the corridors, passing cells of cheering inmates. They didn’t know what was going on, but they loved anything that came along and beet up the guards.
Alpha rushed through to the attic of the building, a control room was set up here with various switches and levers; controls for power systems and cell doors. There was only one guard left in this place. He stood in front of the control desk with a gun in his shaking hands. He was just a kid, he looked like he was barely out of high school. Alpha stood in the doorway and regarded him with a smile; he would be easy to take down. “J,j,just hold it right there.” he said with a nervous stutter.”
Alpha raised his hands and looked like he was surrendering, even for half a second the young man believed that he had won. He only thought this for half a second because Alpha jumped up, spinning through the air and kicked the gun out of the guards hands. Alpha completed a full spin, connecting his over foot with the side of the young mans head and knocking him out cold. It all happened so fast that Alpha would only have appeared as a blur of gold. Leaving the unconscious guard Alpha went straight to the controls, as he’d been ordered to do. He flicked several small switches and pulled a couple of levers, exactly the one’s he’d been told to press. There was a window, proving a full view of the courtyard, The guards were done for, taken down or run away. Omega was no where in sight, his orders were complete, he was returning to their master. Alpha gripped a lever that was used to open and close the mechanically sealed doors of this high security prison, if he had worked the controls right then when he pulled this lever…
All the prisoners in the complex were quite surprised to see their doors open. A high security prison with a population of over 500 persons and all of them were set free.
***********
Mr Incredible arrived, there were two army trucks already on the scene, over thirty soldiers in all. Bob was happy to see a couple of familiar faces and brightly covered suits among them. He didn’t know these two Supers that well, but well enough. They were above acquaintances but below friends. Guardian and Wondergirl. Bob felt a slight pang looking at her, she was the same age as Violet.
Bob jumped out of the car and before he could greet his Super colleagues he was instantly confronted my one of the soldiers, obviously the leader of this operation. “Sir.” The sergeant said with a quick salute. “We’re separating into three teams to approach the prison, if you would, you would be best served with my squad.”
“Fine” Bob snapped. He just wanted to get in there and start hitting anything that was moving. The soldier nodded and turned to shout and everyone else.
“ALRIGHT LET’S MOVE OUT.” He ran off to get to his own men and Bob followed him.
They moved quickly to an area at the side of the prison. The lights on the guard towers seemed to be off, but the prison itself was still illuminated and the alarms were ringing loudly. Bob moved at a jogging speed, racing to a large hole in the wall. He could see people through the gaping hole, unconscious and laying in the dirt. He hurried forward, leaving the soldiers behind, no one said a word. They all would rather that the Super be the first into battle rather than them.
Bob charged into the prison yard and skidded to a halt. There, amongst the fallen guards was a man, but it couldn’t be a man. He stood close to seven feet tall with a chest almost as wide as a car bonnet. His skin was ashen grey and his eyes were dark, empty pools. His body was covered in silver coloured metal. The metal over the chest was thick and piled on in several layers, like a kind of body armour. He looked at Mr Incredible with a slight smile on his face. Bob clenched his fists, he didn’t know who this guy was but he was spoiling for a fight, that much was obvious. Bob raised his fists and glared at Omega. “I don’t know who you are buddy. But I know where you’re going.” With a grunt he launched himself at Omega with a massive swing of his fist. Omega widened his stance and clenched his fists, preparing for the blow. Bob rammed his fist as hard as he could right into the centre of Omega’s chest. The man staggered back a few steps and let out an audible grunt but he barely seemed phased by the blow. His armour wasn’t even dented. “My turn.” He said in a gruff, electronic voice. His fist swung out, slamming Bob in the same place in the chest. Mr Incredible cried out in pain, the blow knocked him off his feet, sending him flying backwards. Bob couldn’t make sense of the world, tumbling through the air until he crashed into the prison walls and fell to the ground, clutching his chest. He hurt, he had never felt this pain. No one had never hit him that hard before. This guy could just as hard as he could. Bob staggered up to his feet and growled. “Now your asking for it.” He charged at Omega. Omega couldn’t dodge the blows, he wasn’t made for any kind of agility. His head whipped back as a powerful left hook caught his chin. Two more blows pounded his chest, but he didn’t feel any of them. Omega grabbed Bob around the neck and lifted him from the ground. Bob gagged and kicked at the air, he hammered his fists on Omega’s arms but it did nothing. Omega just sneered. “Weakling. Such a disapointment.” He threw Bob hard sending him crashing into the prison wall again, masonry fell around him, exposing the steel rods that reinforced the wall. Omega ran over before Bob could recollect his thoughts. The cyborg pummelled the mans chest with powerful blow after blow. Bob winced and gritted his teeth, feeling the powerful punches rearrange his insides; each punch was like a truck to the stomach. He didn’t cry out, he wouldn’t give Omega the satisfaction of hearing his yells.
Just as the world was turning dark the punishment stopped. Mr Incredible dropped to his knees, gripping his body tightly. He tasted blood in his mouth and all his torso was on fire. There was endless pounding in his head. It took him a few seconds to realise that not all of the noise was just in his head, he managed to find the strength to open his eyes and saw the armed soldiers had finally arrived and were shooting at Omega with everything they had. The bullets were just bouncing off the armour and the large man just laughed and charged right at them. Those that didn’t jump out of the way were just mowed down where they stood and trampled underfoot.
Bob dropped onto all fours, two soldiers rushed over and grabbed his arms. One of them pulled a radio out of a pocket on his uniform. “MEDIC.” He screamed down the line. “WE NEED MEDICS.” They helped Bob up to his feet. He stood uneasily, but he stayed up. Some of the other soldiers were not so lucky. They were out cold and not in very good condition. There were screams and shouts coming from the darkness around them, Omega wasn’t stopping for anyone.
Suddenly the prison alarms cut out. Total silence rang in their ears. As relieved as Mr Incredible was that the ringing had stopped, it was only adding to the pain in his head, he knew it was only a signal that something much worse was coming. “Get your injured men to safety. And get the other Supers in here. Come on. Lets move it.”
The frenzy of activity was interrupted as the doors to the yard burst open and a wave of people in bright orange prison jumpsuits charged out. The people at the front of the line were shocked at the sight of the fallen guards, the army guys and the battered Super, but the force of the prisoners behind pushed them forward. They had no choice but to keep running and they raced for the large hole in the wall left by Omega, even if that meant running through the soldiers and Super. Their yells and shouts became deafening as the wave of convicts crashed forward. Bob raced into the crowd, swinging his arms as hard as he could, taking down as many guys as he could. Soldiers did the same or just shot the guys with none lethal injuries, aiming for their legs and arms. It wasn’t enough, too many were getting trough. The prisoners would gang up and overpowered the soldiers, stealing their weapons and turning them on their owners. No one touched Mr Incredible, they knew better than to try and take on a Super.
Bob tried so hard but every movement caused too much agony to crash around his head. First a thick sweat broke out on his forehead, then his breathing became laboured, each breath was like trying to take molten lead into his lungs. Everything on him and in him burned. His legs gave way and he collapsed to the ground. Convicts got in hard kicks, some jumped on him, others still gave him a wide berth. A super that had fallen could still be dangerous. His vision was blacked out as he saw the prisoners racing out to their freedom. Hundreds of maximum security convicts free. His final thought as he passed out was that Psychewave had done it, his grand plan was complete. With these freaks on the loose Metroville was as good as rubble.
