Chapter 27:
A/N: Okay I have decided that Jack and Elizabeth are going to hide away in India. Since it is British occupied there will be ships that deliver mail to the island and take mail from the island as well. Elizabeth sends her letter to her father. Feedback is greatly appreciated!
Jack smiled when he saw Elizabeth coming out of their cabin with Jacob in her arms. He gestured for her to join him at the wheel. Climbing up the steps onto the wheel deck Elizabeth came to stand next to her husband.
“We have our heading love.”
“Where are we headed dear husband?”
“T’ India love.”
“Your childhood home?”
“Aye.”
“Why there?”
“Jus’ feels like the right place t’ go.”
She nodded and shifted Jacob in her arms. She supposed India would be as safe as anywhere else that they could go. Suddenly Jack remembered the letter that was in his pocket that Will had given to him. Reaching into his pocket he pulled out the folded piece of parchment and handed it to Elizabeth. She took it looking a little confused.
“What’s this?”
“A letter from William, he told me t’ give it t’ ye.”
“I’m going to put Jacob back in his cradle so I can read it.”
“Alone?”
“No, I’m coming back out here to be with my husband.”
Jack smiled and placed a quick kiss on her forehead. Leaning down he placed a light kiss on Jacob’s forehead before Elizabeth turned to take him back into their cabin. Elizabeth laid Jacob down in his cabin and rocked it gently to quiet his whimpering. Once he had stopped fussing she headed back out onto the main deck and back onto the wheel deck to join Jack. She opened the letter and began to read it. When she had finished she looked up at Jack. He was looking at her with wide dark brown eyes.
“Well?”
“He was saying goodbye, that’s all.”
“Ah, how very sweet of him.”
“Jack, don’t make fun of Will, he was a very good friend for many years. We were going to get married at one time.”
“Until I showed up an’ ruined it all that is.”
She smiled at the goofy grin that stretched across his face. Taking his right hand off the wheel he draped it around Elizabeth’s shoulders and pulled her closer to him. Elizabeth stood on her tip toes to nuzzle her nose against the side of Jack’s neck softly. She inhaled taking in the scent of the sea and rum mixed with the faint muskiness of Jack’s sweat.
“So India then?”
“Aye love, India.”
“What’s it like Jack?”
“Well it’s very hot for one an’ there’s a lot of…….dirt.”
“Anything else other than dirt?”
“Aye…..camels.”
Elizabeth giggled at his vagueness. She guessed that he just wanted it to be a surprise when they arrived. And she supposed that she could live with that. After all Jack had taken very good care of her and Jacob since they had been on the run. She closed her tea colored eyes and tried to imagine what India would be like. All she could picture was a lot of dirt since that was all Jack had mentioned. And since she had never seen a camel she couldn’t picture what they might look like.
“How long did you live in India Jack?”
“Until I was fifteen, that’s when I ran away.”
“To be a pirate?”
“No not a pirate love, a sailor……an honest one I mean.”
“Jack Sparrow, an honest sailor?”
“Hard t’ believe I know, but it’s true darling. I was at one time an honest merchant sailor for the East India Company.”
“And that’s how you came to know Cutler Beckett?”
“It is. An’ how I came t’ have this p branded on me forearm. Courtesy of Cutler Beckett as well.”
Her eyes fell to his forearm to catch a glimpse of the branded flesh on his right forearm. The flesh was lighter there and raised from where the hot iron had branded it. She ran her fingertips over it lightly and noticed him shiver when she did. Elizabeth knew that Jack did not like to speak of many things in his past. But since she had become his wife he was beginning to tell her more about his life before she had been in it.
“I can’t picture you working for the East India Company Jack.”
“I enjoyed it, was rather good at it.”
“Until?”
“Until I found out that I was smuggling human cargo aboard me ship over t’ the Americas.”
“Slaves?”
“Aye.”
“That must have been awful?”
“It was. It’s how I lost me station in the Company an’ became a pirate.”
“Because of Beckett?”
“Him an’ the choice I made.”
“What choice was that?”
“T’ free the load of human cargo aboard me ship.”
“I see.”
“Once Beckett got wind of it he tracked me down an’ stripped me of my position in the Company, marked me as a pirate, an’ then set me ship on fire an’ sent her t’ the depths.”
“And that’s how you came to make the deal with Davy Jones?”
“Aye. I was desperate t’ have me ship back darling.”
“So desperate that you made a deal with the devil.”
“I did an’ it cost me everything. In the end it wasn’t worth it.”
“And now?”
“M’ life is undoubtedly more better than it was then love.”
She smiled and laid her head on his shoulder as he steered the Pearl. Taking a deep breath Elizabeth decided to ask him about a happier subject.
“Jack?”
“Hmm?”
“Tell me about your mother?”
“Me mum? Oh she was an extraordinary woman.”
“What was her name?”
“Her name was Olivia Sparrow. It was Olivia Blake before she married my father.”
“I see. Where was she from?”
“Well her parents were from England but they moved t’ India before she was born. So me mum is from India.”
“What did she look like?”
“Ah me mum was stunning…..long dark brown hair down t’ her waist, it was curly. An’ her eyes were the most beautiful shade of green I had ever seen. Her skin was like milk it was so white.”
“She sounds lovely.”
“She was an’ she would’ve loved ye Elizabeth. I wish that ye could have known her.”
“So do I. How did your father meet her?”
“Ah he was out pillaging an’ plundering…..doing what us pirates do. He came upon me mum’s village an’ that’s where he saw her. She was standing on the pier….couldn’t have been more than sixteen at the time. He fell in love with her on the spot. Came ashore an’ took her back t’ his ship.”
“Sounds romantic.”
“It wasn’t…..not at first anyway. Teague forced me mum t’ marry him an’ share his bed. Then when she found out she was pregnant with me she fell in love with him.”
“How did she die?”
“Having me. I was born early….on Teague’s ship during a typhoon. Me mum gave birth t’ me on the ship an’ the complications from the birth is what killed her.”
Elizabeth looked up at Jack to see unshed tears glistening in his dark eyes. He quickly blinked them away and cleared his throat before speaking again.
“Enough bout that love. What else do ye want t’ know?”
“What else will you tell me?’
Jack grinned at her broadly. “Trying t’ negotiate eh?”
“Maybe. Is it working?”
“Maybe.”
“I wish that I could have known you when you were a child.”
“Love ye weren’t around for the majority of me childhood. Yer what…nineteen? An’ m’ nearly thirty three. I was already a young man by the time ye were born Elizabeth.”
“You make it sound like you’re so much older than me Jack!”
“I am. Love m’ fourteen years older than ye are. That’s quite a bit.”
“Yes I suppose it is. Well then being that I’m so much younger than you…..wouldn’t that make you a dirty old man?”
Jack looked down at her with wide dark brown eyes his mouth slightly open in shock at her words. She had to cover her mouth with her hand to keep from bursting with laughter at his surprised expression. Jack stuck out his bottom lip in a pouting fashion as her shoulders shook with laughter.
“Yes yes, it’s bloody hilarious darling.”
“I’m sorry Jack, it’s just if you could see your face…”
“Oh so now my face is funny is it?”
“Not your face darling, just the look that was on it.”
“Right.”
“Oh come on Jack, I was only teasing?”
“Ye had better be love.”
“I am. I love you Jack, you know that.”
“Yes an’ I love ye too Elizabeth.”
She wrapped her arms around his waist tightly and hugged him. Jack placed a kiss on the top of her head. They spent the remainder of his watch at the helm in silence just enjoying each other’s company. Soon they would be making port in India and Jack could hardly wait to show Elizabeth his childhood village.
A/N: Okay this is a good stopping point. Hope you are still enjoying the story!
