Chapter 27 – Tigress’s Pearl
Jack glanced up at the man shouting something in the crow’s nest. He handed the helm over to Gibbs and listened more intently as the lad turned to face him, his face sheet white. “There’s an absolutely bloody massive ship heading towards us Captain!” He shouted frantically waving his arms and bouncing on the spot in his agitation. Jack frowned and glanced about for Will, spotting him coiling a piece of rope he jogged up to him.
“Spy glass if you don’t mind lad.” Will handed it over with a faint frown at the Captains lack of one. Jack strode away closely followed by a now curious Will, Elizabeth and half of the crew. “Bloody hell.” He whispered and lowered the spy glass in disbelief. “Turn us around and get some speed out of her.”
“Jack, we’ve got to get back through the coral shoals. There’s no going through them with speed.” Gibbs shouted down from the helm as he began to turn the ship about and guide it through the corals. Jack swiftly took the helm from him and began shouting frantic orders.
“Jack,” Will jogged up alongside the Captain slightly paler than before. “It’s the Tigress and… I think she’s spotted us.”
“Well of course it’s the bloody Tigress! How many ships do you know that are that size?” Jack snapped before returning his attention to getting the Pearl free of the corals. Growing increasingly aware of the looming Tigress, half praying that Oria was captaining her and half praying that she wasn’t.
:/
“Captain?” Oria folded up the parchment and glanced up at the door as Arthur peered around cautiously.
“Aye?” He stepped into the room and approached the desk warily.
“There’s a ship on the horizon. The crew are saying it’s the Black Pearl. She’s not flying any colours but she’s sporting black sails. They’re heading for her now.” Arthur announced warily.
“The Black Pearl?” Oria ignored the tumbling of her heart as she checked the name with a calm tone. The man stepped forwards and watched her more curiously before speaking again.
“Some of the men are afraid. They want you on deck.” He whispered. Oria nodded and rose smoothly despite her heart feeling as if it was in her mouth and her legs made of jelly. Calmly, she led the way out of her cabin and back onto the deck. She paused and turned around to fetch her hat only for Arthur to be stood directly behind her with a broad smile and holding the missing object out to her. “Thought you might want this.” He murmured. Oria took it from him and placed it on her head too nervous to notice his pleased smile as she thanked him absentmindedly.
She jogged up the steps to the helm where James met her look with a grim face. “I didn’t think it would be coming to this so soon.” Oria glanced behind her; the Pearl was floundering through a coral reef. Attempting to beat the Tigress to the open ocean and get up some speed before her cannons came in range.
“Can we not…” Oria whispered.
“The men have seen her; they want to take her down. Prove that this is the greatest ship of all time, even if she is a pirate vessel. They want the Pearl removed and she’s caught in a reef. There’s nothing I can do.” James apologised attempting to look sympathetic. “If you don’t lead them into this then they’ll know where your real loyalties lie. I’ll be forced to punish you.” Oria gritted her teeth, not much of a choice she mused. Take the Pearl and her crew prisoner or risk losing her ship, her life, as well as Jack, his ship and crew being sent to the depths. Rubbish choice really when she thought about it.
“Run out the front and starboard cannons.” She shouted, James nodded and jogged down to the deck.
Oria stepped up to the helm, Arthur stepping aside at the last minute as she reached for the comforting polished wood of the wheel. He stared at the fingers on his hand that she had absently brushed when reaching for the helm. Her eyes still locked onto the Black Pearl as it frantically tried to get free of the corals in time. It was too late; they both knew it as the Black Pearl finally broke free. The Pearl wouldn’t have time to gain speed before the Tigress got her claws into her. She could hear the crew on the other ship shouting to each other, trying valiantly to get the Pearl up and moving. Jack’s voice rising above them all and it caused her to grit her teeth. He was calling for the cannons to be prepared.
:/
“Prepare to fire.” Oria shouted down to her sailors, the sounds of cannons being prepared echoed out over the ship. They began to draw alongside the Pearl. Oria handed the helm over to Arthur and stepped down to the deck. She watched as Jack did the same on his ship in perfect synchrony. The Pearl was a good couple of feet smaller than the Tigress as they trailed to just floating opposite each other. Jack smiled and looked up at her as they stood facing.
“Is it really going to come to this Jack?” Oria shouted over. “My ship versus yours?” She smiled faintly, she couldn’t help it. Just seeing him was good enough, even if it was under these circumstances. “I can assure you that you won’t win.” She whispered knowledgably. He was smiling as well, watching her looking so assured on the monstrosity that was brushing against his Pearl.
“How about we try that theory?” Jack purred, Oria leaned against the railings with a broad grin.
“Come on Jack.” A cannon went off, the Tigress didn’t even rock as the stray cannon grazed against her prow. Oria gritted her jaw and refused to look towards the first graze on her ship. Jack glared back at Will.
“Jack. You hand yourself, your crew and your ship over and nothing will happen to them. I guarantee it.” Oria assured if with a clipped edge at the possible damage to the Tigress, even if it was purely aesthetic. Jack nodded and motioned to Will to get everyone on deck. Even if he had wanted to fight they both knew who had the power at that moment in time. “Prepare to be boarded.” Oria smiled cruelly and stepped away from the railing as the two ships were tied together and the sailors pored over onto the pirate ship without pause.
Oria stepped alongside the Admiral and watched silently as the pirates were trooped onto the Tigress in shackles. “Welcome to the Tigress.” Oria whispered into the silence as they stood before her mutely. Jack paused as he spotted James Norrington and gritted his jaw.
“You didn’t say he was on board.” He snapped accusingly and gave the man a truly heart felt glare.
“Wouldn’t have made any difference anyway. You’d still have been dragged on here or perhaps acting as fish food had you refused.” James quipped back.
“Take them to the brig. Put Captain Jack Sparrow in a separate cell to the rest and get the Pearl on tow.” Oria ordered before stalking into her cabin without a backwards glance. Jack followed her with his eyes, when she was gone he glanced around the ship.
He understood now, he understood where all of her confidence came from. This ship would make any man or woman confident in whom they were. Few would dare challenge this ship now; he hated to think just how powerful it would have been when it had first been built. The Black Pearl looked like a toy boat for a bath next to it.
