Chapter 3:

Will's dreaming was interrupted by someonterntering the cabin. Still half asleep, he merely shifted on the bed, not ready to get up just yet. An angry sounding bang against the near by table, however, caused Will's eyes to snap open.

"Good morning Mr. Turner." A familiar voice with a slightly Jamaican accent spoke somewhere in the room. Will narrowed his eyes and slowly sat up on the bed. It was apparently morning, for the Captain's cabin was now well- lighted, not what it had been the previous night.

"....Anamaria?" Will asked, his voice hoarse and mouth dry. As his eyes became adjusted to the light, he saw the dark-skinned woman, standing next to the table, her arms crossed over her chest.

"Aye. The Capn' asked me to bring you this food..." she pointed at the tray placed on the table. "...and after you've eaten, get your lazy ass up from that bed and join us on the deck!" the woman ordered, her tone of voice telling Will she was obviously not pleased to be a bloody errand girl.

Will nodded immediately, not wanting to argue with Anamaria. Before she could leave, however, he called after her.

"Hey, where's Jack?"

Anamaria raised her dark brows at Will's question. "...Behind the wheel." She answered, staring at Will as if the boy had asked something quite self- evident.

Will watched as she left the room, then slowly got up from the bed. The hangover he'd suffered from last night was but a memory. Jack's poison had actually worked. As he got dressed, he thought about last night, about the way Jack had acted. It only made Will feel confused, so instead, he tried to remember how he had come aboard the Black Pearl in the first place.

'...Nothing...I remember nothing...' Will sighed. It was as if the events of the previous night had been erased from his mind.

'Best ask Jack then...He promised to fill the gaps.' Will twined his hair into a loose ponytail with a leather stripe, grabbed an apple from the trey Anamaria had brought, then left the cabin. As he stepped out into the fresh air, Will had to cover his eyes with a hand, the bright sunlight being too much at first. When he finally lowered his arm, he noticed they had moved while he was asleep. The port of Tortuga was nowhere to be seen anymore. Will looked around, seeing many familiar faces of the crew he and Jack had found the first time he'd been to Tortuga.

"Ahoy there Will!" the familiar voice of Mr. Gibbs called from further away. Will turned around and waved at the bearded man, somehow glad to know he hadn't been forgotten. He closed his eyes and let his lungs fill with the salt flavoured air, sighing as the wind blew the loose strands of hair from his face.

'...I can't believe this! Just yesterday I was sure I had forever lost all this...and now, now I'm here, on the Black Pearl again! ...Jack came back for me...he came back!' Will smiled at the thought and opened his eyes. His heart was bursting with joy, but at the same time, something cast a shadow over his happiness.

'...Jack...he...doesn't return my feelings...doesn't even care what I feel for him...' Will frowned as he headed for the wheel. Very soon Jack was in his field of vision. The older man stood behind the wheel, staring into the horizon, not bothering to lay his eyes down on Will as the boy approached him. Will stood there silently, a few meters away from Jack. He watched and waited. Waited for the pirate to notice him, to say something. Actually Will was pretty sure Jack knew he was there.

'So why doesn't he note me?' the youth frowned, eyeing Jack from under his brows. Just when Will was about to call the pirate's name, Jack turned to face him.

"Feel better?" he asked, his dark eyes watching Will questioningly. The boy nodded and took a step forward. A pleased smile spread on Jack's face. "Told you me remedy would do its job, didn' I?"

Will gave the older man something resembling a smile and brushed a few loose strands from his face. "Yeah, Jack, that you did."

"Well then, young William..." Jack stepped away from the wheel and threw his left arm around Will's shoulder. "...walk with me."

Will followed Jack as the man walked them toward the fore. "Anamaria! Take over the wheel!" Jack shouted the order, then directed his attention back to Will. He noticed the younger man had his gaze fixed on the rings in Jack's left hand fingers. He smiled and tapped his fingers against the boy's shoulder, causing Will to blink his eyes and turn his face in Jack's direction.

"What is our destination?" Will asked and for a moment the arm around his shoulder disappeared as Jack whisked with his hands.

"Where ever we want to go!" the pirate exclaimed happily. They reached the fore and Jack turned to watch the expression on Will's face. "So, lad...you look like you have something on your mind...care to share with ol' Jack?"

Will rid himself of the older man's grip and leaned against the side of the Pearl. "Well yes! A lot of things! Jack, you promised we could talk in the morning..." he glanced up to the sky and eyed the position of the sun. "...and now it's already mid-day...so can I ask the questions?"

Jack followed Will's example and leaned against the side. "You can..."

"Well then, how did you find me? How did I get here? And...and where were you all this time? No one had seen or heard of you in three months! How did you-" Will's burst of questions was stopped by two fingers, pressed against his lips.

"Belay that talk! One question at a time! Savvy?" Jack quieted the boy, motioning with his hands for Will to shut his mouth. The youth gave a nod and took a deep breath.

"Jack, where were you for those three months?" Will asked his first question.

"Well...out of reach." Came Jack's answer. Will didn't seem to get him and raised his brows in question.

"I was a wanted man! The bloody Royal Navy was after me neck, so I couldn't just float around near Port Royal, could I?" Jack explained himself, lashing the air with his hands.

"Ahh... So, you were hiding all that time." Will nodded.

"Out of reach! I was out of reach, as said before." Jack corrected him, the word 'hiding' sounding too cowardly for Captain Jack Sparrow.

Will smirked, making sure the pirate didn't see this, then lift his face, wanting to hear the rest of Jack's story. "Then what happened?"

"I came back, returned to Port Royal. Came for you, Will." The older man continued, noting the faint blush now covering Will's cheeks.

"Y-you came for me?" the youth asked, a little glint of hope in his eyes.

"Aye. Came to see how you and the bonnie lass were doing." With this, Will's heart sank and the hope no longer lingered in his eyes.

"To tell you the truth, Will...it was bloody boring... without you doing something incredibly stupid all the time!" Jack laughed shortly, but went serious as he noticed Will wasn't laughing with him.

"You returned to Port Royal so you could laugh at me again, Jack?" the younger man asked, a hint of anger and hurt in his voice.

The trinkets in his hair tinkled as Jack shook his head . "'course not. I came because...well, I missed you, Will."

The expression on Will's face softened and he smiled inwardly. 'Missed me?'

"But there be no bonnie lass nor the son of Bootstrap-Bill in Port Royal when I finally arrived there." Jack spoke, receiving a nod from Will.

"Elizabeth left to England...alone...and I sailed to Tortuga." The boy spoke with audible sadness in his voice. Jack narrowed his kohl-rimmed eyes and watched Will, his head slightly tilted.

"So Elizabeth is in England now...and you just let her go?" the pirate asked, even if he knew why Will had stayed behind.

"Yes, I let her go!....For ...certain reasons." Will answered his question, sounding annoyed. Jack raised one of his eyebrows, the look on his face serious. He stepped forward and stood before Will, meeting his brown eyes.

"And do you regret it?" he asked in a low voice. The boy was unable to answer at first, Jack's gaze capturing his eyes.

"I...I...don't....know yet.." He finally stammered, blinking his eyes and turning his face to look away. Jack took a few steps back and leaned against the rail.

"...So... young William sailed to Tortuga...and that's where I found you...head full o' rum, moping in some lousy tavern." Jack continued. "I dragged you back to Pearl all by me onesies, helped you take a bath and lay you down in me bed, and watched you sleep like a baby."

"Oh...so that's what happened last night...How did you know I was in Tortuga?" Will asked, his hair messed from the wind. Before answering, Jack suddenly pulled out his sword and used it to snatch the apple Will was still holding in his hand. He took a bite and smiled as he watched the dumbfounded youth next to him.

"The blacksmith...Master Brown, or whatever the name be, told me you had left Port Royal, left to Tortuga in search of...me." Jack took another bite and watched the surroundings. "...So here you are now, on board the Black Pearl with Captain Jack Sparrow."

Will watched as the older man began to walk toward the back of the ship, and finally followed him.

"What will it be, lad? ...I shall take you home, back to Port Royal, if that is what you want. ...Your bonnie lass is a bit too far...but if she is what you want...we shall find a way for you to get to her." Jack spoke, throwing the remains of the apple into the sea. "...Or you can stay and be part of me crew."

Will took a few running steps to catch up with Jack, then lay a hand on his shoulder. "Jack. I want to stay here with you." He answered without a moment's hesitation. Jack turned around to face the boy and eyed him from tip to toes.

"Then so be it." He nodded and flashed his golden teeth. "Mr. Gibbs!" Jack called, and moments later the man joined them from the Quarter deck.

"Sir?"

"Young Mr. Turner here is now part of our crew...and my new first mate." Jack informed, his eyes fixed on Will. With this said, he turned his back and left for the wheel.

Will blinked his eyes as he watched Jack's retreating back. "First mate, eh?" He then turned his eyes in Mr. Gibbs' direction and decided to ask something. "You've known Jack for a long time, right?"

"Aye, for many years." Came the man's answer.

"Well then...has Jack ever..." Will hesitated with his question, not sure if he should be asking such things from Gibbs. "...has he ever loved anyone?"

The man burst out ilauglaughter and watched Will with an amused look on his face, this confusing the boy.

"Jack? In love?! ...Far as I know, there be only three things the man loves: the Black Pearl, a bottle of rum and he himself." Gibbs laughed and patted Will on the shoulder. "Well, best be getting back to work then..." he wiped a tear of laughter from the corner of his eye and left Will standing there alone.

Will turned his face to look at the Caribbean sea, clear and beautifully turquoise. He forced a smile to his lips, realizing he should be happy now. 'I'm finally with Jack again...part of his crew and living a life at sea...I am happy.' The boy told himself, trying to ignore the fact that he was still in love with the pirate captain, and as far as Will knew, his feelings were one-sided.
