Chapter 3

It was dark, and hot, in the brig. Fortunately Anamaria was the only human occupant, so Anna found her fairly easily. The cursing helped; Anamaria thought Jack was coming to lay down some more laws and decided she wasn’t in the mood to listen to any.

“Calm down, it’s only me. Keep that up and you won’t have any voice left at all.”

“Anna?”

“The one and only. Gibbs decided I could do something about this. Now talk to me about this man of yours. He’s a cooper, is he?”

“Aye. He’s a cooper, and a good man, and kind. He didn’t really want to run away and be a pirate, but I wouldn’t give it up for him, so he had to come along.”

“Well, that’s one thing in his favor, I suppose.”

“You’re against it too, are you?”

“Well, no. Not as such. I’m just beginning to realize that the world is engaged, and I’m not. And I probably never will be. I’m lonely, and I think I’m waiting for something that will never happen. It’s not like I have any exciting life to make up for it, either. At least you’ve got that.”

“D’you know what I’d give sometimes to have a less exciting life? At least you’ve got that.”

“All right, point taken. And no, I don’t want to be a pirate. I’m probably a worse sailor than Josiah is. What’s his problem, anyway?”

“Seasick, for one. The Pearl heeled over and he ran for the high side and stayed there, green as an unripe banana, for the duration. On top of that, he doesn’t know how to get out of his own way on board a ship, never mind anyone else’s.”

“So he’s a confirmed landlubber, then?”

“If he wasn’t then, he is now. If he wasn’t chained to the deck, he’d be off the ship in a flash. Problem is, he wants me to come with him, and I can’t.”

“Did you tell Jack that?”

“No. He doesn’t know yet. I made up my mind about it half an hour ago.”

“So you want to stay on board, and he doesn’t. You worried that he’ll give you up completely?”

“I don’t think he will, but I don’t think he’ll be happy either. It’d put him in the same situation you’re in now.”

“Perceptive, aren’t you? Does it show that badly?”

“Well, you didn’t come down here for your own sake, did you? You wouldn’t be trying to fix this if you weren’t interested in it.”

“Now, look, it wasn’t my idea! Gibbs came up to the tavern and talked me into it.”

“But you didn’t come here to see Jack. You came here to see if you could get us out of this.”

“What if I said I only did it to be able to see Jack afterward? Would you believe that?”

“I might if you hadn’t brought that cask with you. I heard it hit the deck, and if Jack and the rum are in the same place, he’s not going anywhere until he’s done with it. You know that.”

“I ought to if anyone does. All right, so I did come down here to spring you. But I’m damned if I get embroiled in another wedding, got that? You figure out how to marry him yourself.”

“Got it. Got a plan for getting married, too, but I’ve got to talk to Josiah first, and it’s hard to do when we’re separated by two decks. Think you can persuade Jack to let me out?”

“I’ll try.”
