Chapter Three: An Extra
Hand

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

The rest of the night
passed peacefully.

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

**style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

The next morning, Jack woke
up, and walked out of his room to the hall.

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

“Good morning, Jack,” said
Melora, with a smile.

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

Jack beamed happily at
Melora.

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

“Want breakfast?” she
asked.

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

Jack nodded eagerly.style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

For the first time, Melora
noticed how loose Jack’s clothes were.  They were quite a bit larger than
they should’ve been, making Melora think that Jack had lost a little weight
recently.  Not wanting to ponder why, she went to the kitchen house, Jack
following like a large puppy.

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

**style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

In the kitchen house,
Melora lit a fire in the fireplace, and placed a rack over it.
style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

“Jack, hand me that bread
over there,” she said, pointing to a shelf next to Jack with almost a full loaf
of bread on it.

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

color:black'>

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

“Thank you, Jack,” she
said, taking the bread from him.

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

Jack nodded his head.style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

Melora found a knife, and
cut several slices of bread and placed them on the rack.  While the bread
was toasting, Melora went to a trapdoor in the floor that led to the cellar,
where they kept cheese, butter, meat, and milk.
style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

“You like bacon?” she
asked, seeing Jack peering at her curiously from the top of the trapdoor hole.
style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

Jack nodded.style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

So, Melora cut some bacon,
and took the meat, butter, and milk with her.
style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

“Help me carry these,
please?” she asked, handing Jack the meat and butter.
style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

 style='font-famVerdVerdana;color:black'>

Jack took them and waited
patiently while Melora climbed the steps back to the regular level of the
kitchen house.

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

**style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

Pretty soon, Melora and
Jack were carrying two glasses of milk and two plates of food to the
house.  Melora showed Jack the way to the dining room, and sat at the
table with Jack.  When Jack noticed that Melora didn’t have any meat on
her plate, he held up a piece of bacon questionably.
style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

“No, thank you, Jack, I
don’t eat meat,” Melora told him, politely.

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

Jack shrugged and went back
to eat in silence.

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

“Thank you for asking, though,”
she added.

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

Jack nodded briefly.style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

Jack ate like he hadn’t
eaten for weeks, which for all Melora knew was true.
style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

**style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

After breakfast, Melora
said, “Jack, would you mind chopping some wood for the house?”
style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

Jack shook his head to indicate
he didn’t mind.

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

“I’ll show you to the wood
pile.  Bonnie or Bernie usually chops the wood, but neither of them are
here, and I don’t quite have the strength to do it myself,” Melora said
apologetically.

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

Jack looked sympathetic,
but still refused to talk.

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

**style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

&nstyle='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

After showing Jack where
the chopping block, wood pile, and axe were located, Melora went to the kitchen
house to wash the breakfast dishes.  While washing the
dishes, Melora though about her guest.

Why isn’t he talking?  I
know he’s not a mute, I can tell, but why doesn’t he talk to anyone?
How’d he end up here, anyway?  He didn’t get mutinied again, did he, wondered
Melora.

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

**style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

Melora had just finished
washing the dishes, and was coming out of the kitchen house, when Bonita came
home from her “lady friend’s” house.

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

“Hallo, Bonnie,” said
Melora cheerfully.

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

“What’s he doing?” Bonita
asked, pointing at Jack.

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

“Chopping
wood.
  class=GramE>Neither you or Bernie was here, earlier, and you know I
can’t chop wood, so I asked Jack to chop some,” answered Melora.
style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

Bonita marched inside the
house, without speaking to either Jack or Melora.
style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

**style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

 style='font-family:Verdana;color:black'>

What is Melora thinking,
letting a pirate stay in our house?  And he’s not
just a pirate, no, he’s bloody Captain Jack Sparrow, thought Bonita,
in her room.  Looking out the window, she saw Melora and Jack come back
into the house.
I don’t care if he was on his deathbed, I
don’t want pirates invading our living space!  Especially, since it was a
pirate that killed Da.  It wasn’t Jack, the pirate was a woman, but it was
a pirate just the same.  Bonita wasn’t going to let it happen again,
either.
Bernie and Melora don’t understand, they think everyone’s good and
nice inside.

Throughout the day, Jack helped
Melora with any tasks she needed help with.  Bonita didn’t ask for Jack’s
help, not that there was much she couldn’t do by herself.  On the rare
occasion that she needed help, she always asked Melora.
