Taming the Terror
Sorry for not updating for so long. I got sick and my muses deserted me. I think they may have been afraid of being contaminated. I also had a lot of homework. Same rules apply as previous chapters. Beta? What’s that?

“Did Jack ever tell you anything about his past? About how he became a pirate?”
Anna’s question rang in Will’s ears alongside the terrified whimpers that Jack was making.
“No, I just asked him why he became a pirate. He got real still and then when I said his name he did this…” Will gestured towards the trembling mass of pirate on the floor.
“Bloody Hell.” Anna said softly looking away, “Look lad,” she re-established eye contact, “Jack won’t like me tellin’ you this but it’s got to be done so you can’t be tellin’ him that I told you, Savvy?”
“Savvy, now what is it Anna?”
Anna looked down at the floor again, “Jack’s gonna kill me,” she muttered and then proceeded to tell Will.
“So Jack was a slave.” Will stated glancing over at the now fitfully sleeping pirate.
“Yes lad, that’s what I’m saying.”
“Anna? Anna we need you topside!” the shout from Gibbs echoed down the stairs.
“Lad you are going to have to try to look after Jack while I run the ship. Once we get to shore we should be able to work him out of it.” Anna said as she walked towards the door.
“But what do I do if he freaks out again?” Will asked desperately as Anna opened the door.
“Whatever you can to calm him down. Yell at him. Hit him. He’ll stop if you scare him enough or knock him unconscious.” Anna said in an indifferent voice although her movements betrayed the distress she felt at having to say those words.
Will watched as Anna dashed up the stairs. Hit Jack. // I don’t think I could even if he attacked me.// Will walked over to where Jack lay curled up and knelt down quietly. He looked at Jack’s face as he slept, small movements and the occasional sound revealing the inner turmoil that lay mostly hidden beneath the tear-stained face. Will gently slid his hands and then forearms beneath Jack’s strong yet slender form, lifting him up and carrying him to the bed, laying him down gently. He walked over to the washbasin Jack had in the corner of his cabin. Anna had recently filled it with warm clean water, likely when she came down to arguth Jth Jack. He picked up the washcloth and dampened it, turning and returning to the bed to wipe the kohl streaks on Jack’s face left by his tears. He returned to a scene similar to one he had witnessed less than an hour ago- Jack eyes wide and curled into the fetal position, trembling in terror with tears silently slipping from his fear-filled dark eyes.
“Shh, It’s okay- I’m not going to hurt you Jack. I just want to clean you up, see I have a washcloth. Wouldn’t you feel better with a clean face?” Will crooned softly as he approached Jack, steps slow and fluid and both hands clearly visible.
Will reached the edge of the bed and knelt down next to it and Jack with their faces at the same level. He put both hands on the bed, palm up and hands open as Jack watched him, muscles tense and ready to flee. Will gently closed the hand that held the washcloth and extended it towards Jack’s face. Jack flinched and slid backwardn Win Will’s hand was about an inch away from his face but Will just continued extending his arm until the washcloth touched Jack’s cheek.
“See baby, I’m not going to hurt you. I want to make you feel better Jack. I would do almost anything to make you feel better. To make you not afraid of me.” Will made eye contact with Jack as he softly spoke.
He gently rubbed a small patch of streaky kohl off Jack’s cheek and noticed that Jack didn’t move away. If anything Jack had leaned in by an almost imperceptible amount. Will gently stroked Jack’s face with the washcloth, his heart almost breaking when Jack began to lean into the gentle caresses like a kitten. When Jack’s face was clean Will slowly got up and walked back over to the washbasin, folding the cloth and resting it on the edge. //I don’t know what they did to him… whatever it was it must have been horrible… he’s so scared, so alone, he doesn’t know he has me…// By the time the young blacksmith turned pirate went to move back towards the bed his face was streaked with tears he hadn’t even realized had started falling. When he reached the bed, Jack did not appear to be nearly as frightened as he had been before, more nervous than terrified now. He looked at Will curiously, his expression a childlike one of confusion. He slid back to the far edge of the bed and glanced from Will to the edge of the giant bed that he was not perched on. Will slowly sat down on the side of the bed, eyes intently searching for any reaction from Jack. When he saw none he began to relax, swung his legs up onto the bed and lay down. Jack tensed and ducked with wide startled eyes as he heard Will’s boots tumble to his cabin floor.
“Oh, it’s okay Jack. It’s okay baby. That was just my boots- I didn’t think you would appreciate them on the bed so I took them back off. It’s okay. Nothing is going to hurt you. I’m just going to close my eyes for a little while, alright?” Will’s soft tenor voice caressed Jack’s ears.
Will watched as Jack processed the information he had been presented and he began to relax a bit more. //If I ever find out who did whatever it is that made him like this… Jack is so strong, whatever it was must have hurt him all the way through… I wish I could just take him in my arms and make it all go away…// The tears that had fallen previously returned with a vengeance and Will cried himself to sleep.
Jack watched with unease as his guardian softly sobbed. When the sobs subsided he tentatively shuffled closer to the man who smelled like a combination of hot iron and ocean. He reached his hand out and touched the man’s face, muscles tense and ready to jerk back. The man’s breathing did not even change as Jack slid his fingers through the cool damp tracks on his cheeks. Jack relaxed even further, softly sliding his hands through all the moisture on the man’s face, attempting to eliminate it. When Jack was finished he looked at his accomplishment with the pride of a young student whose art has been complimented by the teacher.
Jack shivered as the cool, evening Caribbean breeze blew through the window. He shivered again as Anna Maria opened the door and the force of the breeze increased. Jack looked at her with fear in his eyes. Anna looked at Jack, curled on the bed not far from Will, with an expression of mixed astonishment and fondness. She then quietly backut out of the room and closed the door.
Jack warily looked around the room for something to use to keep himself warm. He noticed a blanket sitting at the foot of the bed. As he reached down and used his fingertips to catch one of the edges and drag it towards himself he noticed his companion shiver. He quickly dropped the edge of the blanket and started to recoil. Will just shivered. He did not open his eyes. He did not move. Jack quickly reached down and snatched up the blanket, tugging it over his lower body. He glanced over at the trembling body beside his and then looked back down at the covering in his hand, a slightly calculating glint in his eyes. He grabbed the end and tossed it over Will, ensuring that it covered him. Then Jack wrapped himself in the remaining edge of the blanket, staying as far from Will as possible. Gradually, instinctively, as he fell asleep, Jack snuggled closer to the warmth that Will’s body was giving off.
When Will awoke it was because his stomach was growling. He then realized that he was covered in a blanket and holding Jack to his chest like a child would a favourite teddy bear. He gently slid out from beneath the blanket and pressed a kiss to Jack’s forehead. Will quietly opened the door and went in search of something that he could eat, and then bring back to feed Jack.
