Compliance

Part Three

He would study human behavior again today. Now he had been ordered to do so by the mainframe. Apparently Brown had inquired and the mainframe had deemed this appropriate use of his time.

It was irrelevant to him. He had nothing else to do and at least now he had an order. To have an order and to obey it, that was fulfilling. That was what he was designed to do. Comply. This was good. He would study human behavior.

His choice was to study procreation. He was more fascinated with this subject than any other because it made the least sense. Other animals, even viruses, procreated to further their race and to ensure the survival of their kind, but humans chose to engage in the act without specific purpose. Worse yet, they often found ways to engage in the act and avoid the purpose of it all together. He would study this odd behavior.

‘Stop.’ He commanded.

It stopped. It was a tall lady. She was in her late thirties perhaps with bright red hair and too much make up. He waited. No passers by showed any interest. ‘Go.’ He commanded.

He waited for a while. Perhaps I need to choose someone more attractive. But what is it they consider attractive? ‘Stop.’ He commanded again. This time a young woman stopped. She had shoulder length brown hair and was smiling broadly when she froze. A young man approached her almost instantly. With wide eyes the young man sized her up and then grabbed her purse and ran.

Virus. Smith thought. He pulled out his Desert Eagle and shot him in the back. The man fell dead. Smith retrieved the woman’s purse. He returned it to her and returned to his seat. ‘Go.’ People were running and screaming. The police came. Some of the witnesses pointed to him.

One of the policemen approached Smith. “What happened here?” He questioned.

“He stole a woman’s purse and I shot him.”

“You can’t just go shooting people for that.”

“I did,” Smith growled.

“You need to come with us,” the officer stated.

“I do not think that will be necessary,” Smith said smoothly. “Everything here is just as it should be,” he continued in his silky voice.

“Yes sir,” the officer agreed and turned and left. They loaded the body onto an ambulance and things returned to normal. As normal as things could be within the Matrix.

‘What are you doing?’ Brown inquired.

‘I am following orders.’

‘Report.’ Brown responded.

Smith sent the days data to the mainframe. ‘Do not kill the humans unnecessarily came the return order.’

‘It was necessary.’ Smith responded.

‘Observe, do not destroy.’ Came the mainframes reply.

‘I will comply.’ Smith responded.

Downtime.
