A Will to Survive
Chapter 3
“I didn’t know we was takin’ on captives,” the huge black man known as Bo’sun said as Elizabeth was brought on board.
“She’s invoked the right of parley with Captain Barbossa,” Pintel stated defensively.
Elizabeth stepped forward. “I am here to negotiate –” She was cut off by Bo’sun backhanding her fiercely.
“You will speak when spoken to,” Bo’sun said harshly.
The captain stepped forward and grabbed the man’s wrist. “And ye not lay a hand on those under the protection of parley.”
“Aye, sir,” Bo’sun replied, stepping back.
Barbossa turned to Elizabeth. “My apologies, Miss.”
Elizabeth stood up tall and started speaking, “Captain Barbossa , I am here to negotiate the cessation of hostilities against Port Royal.”
Barbossa considered this a moment before stating, “There are a lot of long words in there, Miss; we’re naught but humble pirates. What is it that you want?”
“I want you to leave and never come back,” Elizabeth ground out.
“I’m disinclined to acquiesce to your request.” At Elizabeth’s confused face he added, “Means ‘no.’”
“Very well,” Elizabeth said, jerking the golden medallion off of her neck and dangling it over the sea. “I’ll drop it.”
“Me holds are burstin' with swag. That bit of shine matters to us?” Barbossa asked nonchalantly, but suddenly straightened and barked, “Why?”
“It’s what you’ve beenrchirching for. I recognized the ship. I saw it eight years ago on the crossing from England,” Elizabeth proclaimed.
“Did ya, now?” Barbossa asked, interested.
“Fine. Well, I suppose if it is worthless then there’s no point in me keeping it, Elizabeth said, letting it slip through her fingers a bit causing the pirates to lunge forward. Elizabeth gave them a knowing look.
“Ah,” Barbossa said, chuckling. “You have a name, Missy?”
“Elizabeth Swann,” she stated proudly.
“Well, Miss Swann, I’m afraid we cannot leave this port without something else that we need, or rather someone.” Barbossa smiled wickedly. “If you really want us to leave, you’ll have to surrender him to us, after all, what’s one life for all the lives you will save?”
Elizabeth considered this. She didn’t want to have to hand anyone over to these ruthless cutthroats, but what choice did she have? If she didn’t, even more lives would be lost. “Alright. Who do you seek?”
“Turner,” Barbossa spit the name out as though it were filth.
Elizabeth’s breath caught in her throat. “Will,” she whispered.
“Lead me to him,” the evil captain commanded.

Jack watched over Will from the distance in agony. All he wanted to do was gather him in his arms and never let go. However, that was impossible seeing as how Will was out there and he was in here.
Suddenly, a group of people caught his eye. Looking closer he could discern the figure of Barbossa and crew, along with Elizabeth Swann. As he looked to see where they were heading to, his heart stopped. It couldn’t be. She wouldn’t. How could she?
His deepest fears came true as he watched helplessly as Barbossa signaled for one of his men to pick Will up and carry him to the ship. The pirates left Elizabeth to sink to the ground and stare after them.
Jack couldn’t bear it. He felt as if his breath, his heart, his very soul had been taken from him. His world shattered around him and his knees lost their strength. He fell numbly to the floor. For the first time in ages, he allowed tears to slip from his eyes.
