3) Tribute
When the pact was made, there was close to over a hundred people in the village. Including the ten that were sent, roughly seventy people had been taken up to the castle in the past ten years. As tempting as a large raid was to the Skeksis, the pact assured a constant flow of new slaves as the village was left alone to prosper and grow.
Now, it was Sakura's turn as she lived the next three days in the special hut made for the Chosen One. These days were a blur to Sakuratimetime seemed to crawl as slow as turtle. She merely passed through them as if she were a puppet as she ate what food was brought to her and she made polite conversation with those whom came to see her. Nearly the whole village came to see her, many said their good-byes while a lot also thanked her for sitting with the ones chossen from their families. Yet it wasn't untill the middle of the third day when her parents finally came to see her. She was sitting in a chair plucking the strings on a strange instriment when her parents entered the hut.
"Sakura?" her mother said. Sakura looked up and gasped in surprise as an overjoyed look painted itself on her face.
"Mother! Father!" Sakura exclaimed happily and she jumped up to embrace them both.
"My sweet baby girl," her mother said as she held and kissed her daughter on the forehead as her father merely held her sadly.
Her mother was five feet and four inches tall with a curvy and vulunpous body. She had pale pink skin with bright blue eyes outlined by thin upturned lashes and thin black eyebrows. Her hip length wavy brown hair was pulled back by a black ribbion. At the moment, she wore a green with black ivy yukata with a black obi and sandles.
Her father was five feet and eight inches tall with a well defined body from working in the feilds. While his skin was evenly tanned, he had bushy eyebrows to go with the mushtache he had grown. He had long pin straight black hair that was pulled back by a simple hair tie and brown eyes. He wore a pair of wide bottom navy blue pants with a white top that wraped around the front and tucked into the pants and sandles.
"Sakura, I'm sorry for my outburst three days ago," her mother appologized.
"It's okay mother, I understand," Sakura said and her mother smiled. With this, the trio sat down and had a nice visit as they recollected their favourite memories from her childhood. It was only then that Sakura began to feel alive again and time resumed its normal function. Before she knew it, the visit with her parents came to an end as her parents had to leave and she had to get ready for the ceremony. First, two women came in and assisted her in a cherry blossom scented bath before her hair was pulled back into a small bun and she was dressed in an all white outfit of a kimono, obi, sandles, veil and mini hair comb with a clay cherry blossom attached to it. Once she was dressed, the necklace was placed back around her neck.
As the suns began to set in the horizon, Sakura was allowed to finally leave the hut as she was escorted to a table in the middle of the village. There, she shared her last dinner with her finally as torches burned around them and ceremonial music was played for the family. Traditionally, the head male of the family sits at the head of the table; but during the tribute, the Chossen One sits at the head of the table. So that's where Sakura sat, dressed in a all white yukata with a white obi and a white veil.
"I feel odd wearing this," Sakura commented as she played with the necklace with her right hand and stared at her food.
"I know, but it was requested," she heard someone say.
"Requested?" Sakura asked as she looked up from her plate.
"Yes, the..." her mother started to explain but stopped when the drums stopped. Everyone at the table looked up and saw that two Garthum had arrived on the outskirts of the village. As per the agreement, the Garthum could never enter the village. The Chossen One had to leave the village volluntarily and be escorted by the Garthum to the castle.
"It's time," came the voice of the village elder, breaking the eneasy silence of the night. Sakura's mother choked back a sob and Sakura got up from the table. Having said her final good-byes to her family and giving them her well wishes, Sakura left the table and walked over to the Garthum as the bat returned to her shoulder.
"I was begining to wonder where you went," Sakura whispered to the bat whom merely squeaked. Sakura frowned at this as she turned her attention back to the twin black metal giants that looked very much like the sacred Scareb bettles from the Great Sands. She stopped short of three feet from the twins and looked at the both of them in turn before she let out a sigh.
"I'm ready," she said. The two Garthum came back to life and ushured her away from the village with their crab like claws. Sakura was caught off guard by this and skidded her feet at first untill she finally began to walk. She was then led out of eyeshot from the village to adge dge crafted out of wood and drapped in white linens.
"Please step onto the bardge and you'll be taken to the castle," came a different voice from the bat. Sakura raised an eyebrow at this but did as she was told none the less. She approached and stepped onto the bardge to find the bottom lined with pillows. Once she was seated, the two Garthum moved over to the Bardge and picked up the bars with their claws before they carried her off into the night.
Though the rids a s a bit choppy, Sakura couldn't complain due to the fact that she didn't have to walk all the way to the castle. The whole way, Sakura kept her eyes on the road ahead as she nuzzled the bat with her fingers once again. As she did so, she saw now why the Skeksis had the Tribut on the night of the new moon. It was pitch black out and she couldn't tell where they were, it made it impossible for the Chossen One to escape at any given moment. Sakura frowned upon this as she dashed all thoughts of escape from her mind and beto pto ponder as to what her life was going to be like in the castle. Her thoughts were interupted though when the ride came to an end and the bardge was placed gently down on the ground.
Curiously, Sakura looked around and saw some lights to her right. She pulled back the curtain and saw that they were torches at the only entrance into the castle. As she disembarks from the bardge, a male human figure dressed in a simple lolothloth walked out of the castle and approached her with a lantern in his right hand.
"Hello?" Sakura said and the man stopped three feet away from her before he bowed much like a butler would. Sakura was surprised to find that he was a man from her village, he had been chossen three summers ago shortly after the summer festival. As in festivals, there were many games to be played by all and this man came in third place in the running race. Yet he didn't look as he did back then, not only did he look thiner and a bit malnurished, he looked as if someone had casted a spell upon him and stole his free will.
"Follow me," the man said, his voice almost devoid of emotion. Sakura frowned at this as she followed him into the castle. The moment that the two were in the castle though, the bat that had been with her for the past three days left her. Sakura was surprised by this and a slight fear creapt up her spine as she felt alone in this strange place. Even so, she continued to follow the man and shencednced around as she did so. She noticed that there were other humans there as well. Some she recognized from her village, others she didn't. There were also some creatures that she couldn't recognize though she knew them not to be Skeksis.
After an excessive amount of walking, many hallways and several flights of stairs latter the two came to their destination. The man stopped before a large wooden door and opened it before he led the way in. Tentativally, Sakura followim iim into the room and glanced around. It was lit by many white candles of various sizes. By their light, Sakura could see that it was a fairly large room that was sparsly furnished. The largest peice though was the bed, it was a king sized canopy crafted from metal and dressed in white linens. As Sakura looked around the room, questions swirled around in her mind as the man made his way back to the door.
"Please wait here," the man said as he left the room.
"Wait!" Sakura gasped but her voice fell upon deaf ears and the door soon closed with a light thud. Sakura then cursed under her breath as she paced around the room. Though she had no idea what was to happen to her, she feared that she'd end up like that man and a shiver ran through her body. Seconds passed like minuets in the uncomfortable silence as Sakura waited impatiently as her nerves began to slowly unravel. Finally, her wait came to an end when the door opened. In the middle of pacing, Sakura stopped in her tr in in front of the bed and looked up to see a Skeksis enter the room. It was SkekUng, the former general and the current Emperor.
