The Call of a Sparrow

Chapter Three: Against a Wall

Disclaimer: This movie and all of its characters do not belong to me. But I do have a Jack Sparrow poster! Yay!

Note: I…despise certain parts of this chapter. Anyway, be forewarned, nothing terribly exciting happens. I think this is just one of those filler chapters. Sorry. ^_^

Jack and Will made their way out of the noisy pub and into the equally noisy town. The brown-eyed blacksmith casually glued himself to Jack’s side, not wanting him to know how uneasy the lusty gazes in the eyes of the women, and also some of the men, made him. Jack glanced at Will, a small smirk forming at the corners of his lips, as Will flinched at every passing brush of hand or body.

“Lovely town, isn’t it, mate?”

Will swallowed visibly as a drunken prostitute giggled seductively into his face, pulled away only by an even more intoxicated man. “Oh yes. Quite pleasant,” he said sarcastically.

Jack chuckled softly and pointed into the near distance. “There she is, Will. The Pearl.” He said the name with such affection that Will could not keep the fond smile from his face.

They walked the rest of the way to the docks in comfortable silence, the smile on Jack’s face broadening with every step he took towards his ship. Will admired the grand vessel, as the gangplank was lowered for them. The crewmembers had waited patiently for their captain’s return as he had ventured off, looking for whom he had sent.

“All right, men,” he began to his crew once on board. Anamaria glowered at him for his choice of words and Jack winked noticeably in her direction. She rolled her eyes. “I’d like you to greet our newest member, William Turner.” He motioned for the young man to stand next to him as the crew gave him a hearty salutation. “Will, these are your new shipmates. You should get along with them fine. Good lot, they are.” He nodded approvingly.

Will smiled shyly at them, shifting uncomfortably at being the center of attention. He recognized a few of them, having spoken several times with them during their last adventure together. However, most faces were foreign to him, probably having come aboard after Jack left Port Royal. Jack patted him reassuringly on the shoulder and commenced barking orders to weigh anchor and set sail.

Will waited expectantly, unsure of what to do. “Jack?”

“Captain,” he corrected. “You are under my authority now, William.” He smiled. “So I think we should start using the proper titles, aye?”

The blacksmith arched one dark eyebrow. “Yes, of course,” he replied dryly. “Captain Sparrow…what should I do now?”

“First, I think I ought to let you get acquainted with me ship.”

Jack started off in the direction of the bow, his tour working from front to back. Will paid close attention for the most part, listening especially when his duties were revealed to him. The dark-haired man frowned, not bothering to hide the disappointment from his face.

“Swab the decks? What?”

“Well, mate, what did you expect to do?”

The blacksmith shrugged. “I don’t know…something a bit more…”

“Exciting?”

“I suppose…”

Jack chuckled deeply in response. “You think you can just walk in and be at the top of the food chain? You’ve got to work your way up, boy. Maybe in a few weeks we can bump you up to assistant cook.”

“Assistant cook?”

“Assistant cook.”

Jack laughed wickedly at Will’s almost childish expression and began his tour again. “And this is a wheel…” he said, motioning dramatically and speaking slowly as if to a child.

“Ha ha.” Will glared at the pirate, watching the dread-locked man grin playfully. They continued around the ship like that, Will actually trying to learn something and Jack teasing relentlessly, until they reached the captain’s room. It was the only thing Will had yet to see.

“In case you’ve been too coddled with that gentlemanly lifestyle of yours, I’ll let you stay in my quarters until you get used to it all,” he said with a slight lift of his eyebrows.

Will bristled. “I’m no gentleman, Jack, and you know that. That’s a status I never could attain.” He glared murderously at the pirate, obviously offended, the captain’s words opening the door of emotions he had tried to keep hidden carefully away.

“I don’t need favors from you,” Will continued. “I can handle myself quite fine in the crew’s quarters. I’m not too spoiled for that.”

Jack held up his hands in surrender. “No harm meant, lad. Just thought I’d offer.”

“Well you can just take your offer, *Captain* Jack Sparrow, and stick it up your—”

“Didn’t realize you had a pirate’s tongue on you,” Jack interrupted, a sparkling grin on his lips.

Will clenched his teeth, knowing that Jack only acted the way he did to irritate him, but he refused to be baited. If he was going to live on this ship with him, he could not let the pirate rile him with every word spoken. Will sighed and turned.

“I’ll put my things away. Do you have anything for me to do afterwards, Captain?”

Jack smirked, savoring the way his title fell from the handsome blacksmith’s lips. “Oh yes, I have plenty for you to do,” he said casually, even as his mind twisted the words into something less than pure. “Like I said, lad, those decks need to be swabbed. And after that there’s a sail or two that probably need stitching up. And…”

“What am I, a housewife?” Will muttered under his breath.

“You’d be right pretty in a dress, I’d imagine.”

Will stared wide-eyed at Jack, a blush already clouding his cheeks. “Excuse me?!” he spluttered.

“I said, ‘You’d be right pretty in a dress, I’d imagine.’” He spoke slowly again, another deceptively innocent grin plastered onto his tanned face.

Will closed his brown eyes and shook his head. “Jack, you’re impossible. Sometimes I’d just rather bang my head against a wall than hold a conversation with you. It’d have the same effects.”

“Aw, Will, you wound me,” the captain replied with his hand over his heart in a mock show of hurt.

Will rolled his eyes and shifted his bag. “Right, like I said, I’m going to the cabins…”

Jack watched as the blacksmith turned and walked away, pleased to note that a trace of pink still lingered on his cheeks. The roguish pirate was willing to admit to himself that he was attracted to the younger man walking away from him, and he certainly felt a twinge of disappointment at his refusal to sleep in his room. However, he also had enough confidence in his charms to know that he could get Will to change his mind about where he laid his head at night. The pirate smiled.

Meanwhile, Will descended the stairs to where the crew slept. He placed his things next to a free hammock and breathed a breath he didn’t realize he had been holding. Resting his hands on the wall, he allowed his head to fall forward to tap against the wood. He repeated the action several times and sighed again. Jack tended to leave him feeling flustered and suffocated. The reason was a mystery to him, either because he honestly did not know or he just refused acknowledge it.

But still…he was now starting to wish that he had taken Jack up on his offer.
