Chapter 3
Gabriel´s uncertainty let him take a step back, away from the vampire and his outstretched hand.
Van Helsing didn´t know what to make of Dracula´s friendly gesture.
All he wanted was to get away from the creature in front of him. Out of this clammy basement and into the silver light of the moon again.
Gabriel shook his head once more. This last desire had not really been his own thought. It had been the wish of the fierce creature that he had to share his body – and obviously also his mind - with.
A sudden panic gripped Van Helsing. He was not so sure anymore if he ever would find his separate identity again.
Dracula watched Gabriel´s inner struggle with amusement. It was getting better by the minute.
Now, Vlad wanted to find out if his opponent still possessed some remnants of resistance. He knew that the next step would not be as simple as luring the wolf down into this cellar.
The vampire took another step forward towards Gabriel. He rolled up the sleeve of his black robe and the alabaster skin of his wrist seemed to gleam in the darkness that surrounded the two men.
Vlad used the sharp fingernail on his right little finger to slice open the hard flesh of his wrist. A deep wound was torn open and the contrast of the white skin with the welling thick blood made quite a fascinating picture. Gabriel´s eyes were drawn to this sight despite the nauseous feeling in his stomach.
“I haven´t forgotten about your past…about our background, Gabriel,” the vampire breathed, slightly distracted by the smell of his own blood, that was dominating the room.
“Taste my blood and you will understand…know it all again. Who you were, who I was…400 years ago…,” With these words, the Count stretched his arm out to Gabriel once more.
Van Helsing´s inner struggle became even more intense and he looked at Dracula in shock.
Gabriel could not relate to the image of himself, sating his thirst on Dracula´s wrist. He never had been too fond of blood. Not even his own. When he was wounded, he didn´t lick it off, but always preferred to use water or bandages on the injured skin. Also, he was not sure if he would be turned into a creature of the night, should he taste the blood of the Undead. He already had to share this body with a wolf. A third inhabitant would lead to his destruction, he was sure.
Still, he was unsure of how to decide. Dracula´s offer was too precious to let this opportunity pass.
In addition, his curiously was too heavy to ignore it. He couldn´t bear the state of dull ignorance and amnesia any longer.
Vlad had expected Gabriel to suffer from great doubts and uncertainty. Still, the vampire´s patience was slipping away quickly, and with a frown, his eyes followed a rich red drop that was falling from his wounded wrist, down onto the rough stones of the basement´s floor.
Maybe it was a hint of inner persuasion what Gabriel needed just now.
Carefully, Vlad dipped into the man´s mind and searched for it´s core amidst all these knotted strings of confusion, fear and doubts in Van Helsing. It was not as easy as the vampire used to handle human minds. He staggered a little, when he passed the vicious creature that also lurked in the hunter´s head. Such untamed power and force had a seductive and magnetic effect, even on the ancient vampire master.
Gently, he pulled the strings that held Gabriel´s remnants of suspicion towards the Count. Soon, he succeeded in destroying the strong knots that had gotten in the way between his influence on the man and Gabriel himself. He left Van Helsing´s mind as silently and unnoticed as he had invaded it.
Testing his own influence on Gabriel, he boldly took several steps towards the half-naked man, until they stood face to face. Van Helsing still frowned and his breath went quickly on alert. But he neither stepped backwards nor avoided the Count´s gaze any longer.
With some calmly spoken sentences, Dracula managed to lift the last scared thought off Gabriel´s shoulders.
“Drink…just a little. My blood won´t have crucial impacts on you. For a metamorphosis, I would have to consume all of your blood.”
Encouragingly, Vlad lifted his wrist up to Gabriel´s face. The hunter´s face still wore traces of uncertainty, but his curiousity got the better of him.
Slowly, he took a hold of Dracula´s wrist and wrapped his clammy hands around the white flesh of the vampire. For Vlad´s very thin line of patience, it literally took ages until Gabriel´s lips finally closed around the bloody wound.
To be continued…
