Chapter 3

Suddenly they saw her, but she wasn’t being lowered to them. Riddick watched as she seemed to be falling, but almost in a controlled pose as she headed for the ground face first. Then, in an instant she rolled forward and landed crouched on the ground. She looked up and stood as the men and woman who had gathered stepped back almost falling over themselves. She looked at them, a sly smile coming over her.

Slowly standing before them she looked around to see if she could spot the one she came for. The whole group was quiet with only occasional whispers among them. Her gaze lifted to see a man standing on a ledge. She averted her eyes to make it appear as though she was glancing around casually, but she smiled inside knowing she had found him, and she had made quite an entrance for him to witness in the process.

She walked a few steps forward and a man stepped up to her. He had a large wrench in his right hand that he was slowly tapping on his leg in an attempt to look menacing. Alexis looked into his eyes and smiled softly.

“Can I help you?” She ask in a tone that almost sounded sincere.

The man smiled back and showed a mouth of rotted teeth and pieces of what she assumed was his lunch.

“Look what we got here boys.” He smiled viciously. “Such a pretty little lass, she looks good enough to eat.”

Alexis kept her eyes on the gross man, not showing any sign of fear. Riddick also watched from above, squatting down low, his attention focused on her. He had never seen any woman stand ground like her before. The fact that he couldn’t smell her fear also intrigued him.

Sensing Riddick’s eyes on her she kept her stance fierce, she knew Riddick would find that appealing. She glared at the large man who stood menacingly before her.
“I’d be careful if I were you.” Alexis said boldly, “Some things you eat can kill you.” She stepped closer to the man, her eyes fixed on his. She spoke again taunting him. “Sure you still want a bite?”

Riddick watched with fascination. He’d never seen anyone thrown into slam before who acted like they could talk the talk and walk the walk, except him, but even that took experience from being in slam as often as he was. His eyes never disengaged their look upon her the whole time she was staring that bastard down. It was beautiful to him.

Alexis stood firm and watched intently to see what the man in front of her would do. She hoped he would back down. She didn’t have any fear of being hurt, she knew she could take care of herself, but she wasn’t sure she wanted to let Riddick see much more yet. He had already seen her drop 200 feet and land without injury. Anything more might be pushing it at this point.

The man gave Alexis a sneer and stepped back. “You better watch you back little girl, because at some point I’m going to jump on it.” With that he turned and walked around a corner and down into one of the many tunnels. All the other inmates followed suit. Giving her a look of menace, fear, or wonderment and then retreating to their own part of the prison ground.

Taking a deep breath Alexis looked around again. She noticed Riddick was gone from the ledge and assumed he must have gone into his cell. A couple guards had come out of the control hub to take care of her remains and looked at her in shock. She waved at them with a carefree glance. They muttered to themselves and walked back to the tower watching her the whole time with the guns pointed at her. “Glad the guards seem to care.” She mouthed to herself. “Guess I need to make myself at home.”

She went to a quiet unoccupied corner and sat down. She watched the others moving about and noted where most of them seemed to be staying. She also noticed that at no time had anyone climbed the rope leading up to the cells on the ledge. No one even came close to it, like it was the plague or something. “Must not be too fun staying next to Mr. Riddick.” She thought to herself. “How lucky for me.” She also took in all the tunnels leading through the underground slam, the few names she heard hollered out from time to time and the glares and looks she got at passersby’s. This place was like a huge cave; all rock, very little light, and water trickling everywhere. Beautiful in its own right, but no place to have to live.

After several hours she stood up and walked over to the rope. “Time to get some rest,” she mumbled. She reached out to grab it when it suddenly was yanked up out of her grasp. She looked to see Riddick’s massive form standing on the edge looking down to her.

“My rope.” He said with a smile.

“So you need 2 cells or what?” Alexis shot back, intrigue written all over her face.

Squatting down he answered. “No. Just my rope. You want the other cell, find your own way up.”

Alexis looked at him for a moment taking in his passive expression and then turned around and starting walking away. Riddick smiled to himself as he watched her walk away, he liked her look going away almost as much as coming towards him.

Alexis stopped about 20 feet away. She turned back around and looked at the ledge and surrounding walls. “Easy.” She said quietly. Then, with a sprint she ran to the wall.

Riddick could hardly believe his eyes. She ran to the rock wall that connected with the ledge and jumped up about 10 feet landing on a small piece of jutting out rock. She pushed off of that and jumped another 20 feet landing just under the ledge. She then swung her body and pushed her feet off another shelf of rock and grasped the rock that stretched out above the ledge. From there she pushed herself slightly over and let go landing on her feet and staring up at Riddick. His expression was stoic but she could feel he was reeling inside at the sight of her.

She gave him a big grin. “Thanks for the suggestion, I needed the workout.” With that she walked into the empty cell leaving Riddick out on the ledge.
