Chapter 23 - Oaths

Jack tugged at the oars and they glided over the ocean towards the pirates cave with hardly a splash. Slowly they entered the gloom of the tunnel, Will glanced about him, gold coins were scattered along the sea worn edges. His eyes rested on a pirate skeleton, the killing sword still embedded in his back.

“You know for having such a bleak outlook on pirates you’re well on your way to becoming one. Sprung a man from jail, helped said man rescue another pirate from under a Commodores’ nose, commandeered a ship of the Fleet, sailed with a buccaneer crew out of Tortuga…” He glanced over the side of the boat where Wills’ gaze was locked, his eyes wide. Jack grinned, “And you’re completely obsessed with treasure.” Oria pushed her fingers through the water and tossed a golden coin at Will. He caught it eagerly before glowering at her; she merely smiled mockingly and shrugged at Jacks’ chuckle. The hull of the boat ground against the mixture of sand and coins and Jack leapt out to drag it more safely up the bank, Will stepped out furiously as Jack began to stride away.

“That’s not true. I am not obsessed with treasure.” He slipped the coin into his pocket. Jack grinned down at him from the top of a ledge; a golden light reflecting off his features and glinting off the golden teeth.

“Not all treasure is silver and gold mate.” Jack looked pointedly at Oria, she met his gaze with a curious expression and he turned back to regard the scene unfolding. Barbossas’ voice called out loudly as Oria offered Will a hand and dragged him up onto the ledge between her and Jack.

“Gentlemen, the time has come. Our salvation is nigh! Our torment is near at end.” Will gazed over the edge worriedly.

“Elizabeth!” She was stood behind the golden chest trembling slightly, the gold pirate medallion glowing off the purple gown. Barbossas’ hand was resting on her shoulder ensuring she would stay still.

Barbossa’s foot connected with the top of the lid and it slid off with a loud thud. Elizabeth jumped slightly at the sudden noise, “The cursed treasure of Cortez himself. Every last piece that went astray we have returned, save for this.” His finger pointed accusingly to the pirate medallion resting against Elizabeth’s chest. Will scrambled up suddenly, his feet colliding with several coins.

“Jack!” Will cried out quietly terrified that he wouldn’t get there in time to save Elizabeth. Oria skidded down the slope and caught most of the coins before they could rattle against the stone; she looked up at Jack who was dragging Will down with him. Jack pushed him away from the ledge and back onto the floor.

“Not yet. We wait for the opportune moment.” Barbossas’ voice echoed out loudly again.

“881 we found but despaired of ever finding the last.” Will was glaring angrily at Jack as Oria placed the coins on a pile of silk to minimise the sound.

“When’s that, when it is of greatest profit to you?” Jack ignored him and turned to Oria.

“Go back to the Interceptor; tell them we are going to need a quick ‘escape’.” She met his gaze and was about to explode, he nodded encouragingly and she caught his meaning.

“Aye Captain.” She turned sharply on her heel and headed for the row boat. Jack returned his gaze to Will.

:/

Will clambered up the side of the ship slowly his mind reeling with thousands of unanswered questions, he turned around and reached down for Elizabeth. Her hand slipped into his and let him drag her up. She pressed herself back against him as her eyes lighted on the group of pirates.

“Not more pirates.” Gibbs stepped forwards with a kind smile.

“Welcome aboard Miss Elizabeth.” She frowned as she recognised him.

“Mr Gibbs?” Oria pushed past them and gazed down into the boat expectantly.

“Boy where’s Jack?” Oria spoke out with a frown, Elizabeth glared back at him.

“Jack? Jack Sparrow?” Will didn’t meet her gaze but glared at Oria as he grasped Elizabeth more tightly.

“He fell behind.” He quickly led Elizabeth away, Oria followed furious.

“What?” Her tone was flooded with barely restrained anger, Gibbs glanced back at Anna-Maria.

“Keep to the code.” Anna-Maria nodded.

“Weigh anchor! Hoist the sails! Make quickly divvies.” Oria glared back at them accusingly and headed for the row boat, Gibbs stepped between her as Sara cried out fearfully.

“He wouldn’t want you going back Oria.” She glared at him as a pair of hands grasped her arms and pulled her back gently. She shrugged out of Anna-Marias’ grasp and turned around to question Will, she jogged down the steps to the hold but Gibbs caught her arm sharply tugging her back around. Sara staring up fearfully at her and reaching for her hand.

“Let them have some time, you can’t go back for Jack now. You can always return at a later date. Your daughter needs you now.” Slowly she nodded and scooped the girl up comfortingly, she felt the warm arms encircle her neck. Her mind was whirling at the thought of Barbossa with Jack at his mercy once more.

:/

“Will, I’m so sorry, please forgive me.” Elizabeth whispered, she jumped as Will slammed the medallion down on the table his jaw tightening visibly in anger or frustration Elizabeth couldn’t tell. He rose suddenly remembering his questions and headed up top, Elizabeth close on his heels. Oria was tightening a rope on the port side of the deck. He strode over to her angrily and tugged her around sharply to face him. Sara was sat on a barrel watching carefully, she had quickly formulated in her mind that she did not like the way he looked at Elizabeth and was giving him the disapproving glare.

“What the bloody… Will?” He glared at Oria harshly.

“Why did you help those pirates take Elizabeth?” She frowned and brushed his arms away.

“Elizabeth? Elizabeth who?” Elizabeth stepped around curiously and recognised her immediately.

“YOU!” Oria glanced her up and down before recognition dawned in her eyes.

“Oh, you’re Elizabeth. Well that clears a lot up.” She smirked and moved as if to turn around but Will grasped both of her shoulders to prevent her, she sighed heavily.

“You didn’t answer my question.” Oria gazed at him steadily.

“Because I was under orders to find and return the one who bore the Aztec gold medallion. I found, I returned, end of story.” She moved to turn around again, Will stopped her again and her patience snapped, she drew her double barrelled pistol and aimed it at his head, “Turn me around one more time lad and I will shoot you. I was under orders, I swore an oath to protect you at all costs and to keep them cursed. Your father had my loyalty as strong as Jack does and I am not about to betray my oath.” She lowered the pistol, “At all costs includes sending your little friend there to the gallows if needs be,” She glanced back at Elizabeth pointedly, “Sorry love but you aren’t anything to do with me.” Her gaze returned to Will, “You however Master Turner are and therefore I must act in any way I can to prevent any harm befalling you. That includes this…” She tugged her sleeve back and unbuckled her leather wrist guard careful to keep the tattoo out of his eyes range. She turned the guard upside down, a glittering gold medallion bared its teeth at them, “I too am cursed William, for you and your father’s sake. This is my bargaining chip to get you out alive if there is no choice but to let you spill your blood and lift their curse. I will refuse giving my own blood until I know you are safe.” Elizabeth glanced at it.

“But Barbossa said that they had all 881, the one Will has is the last.” Oria grinned winningly; she had to admit that was part of her most brilliant plan yet.

“By the time they had over five hundred they got bored of counting, I stole one that day and have kept it on me ever since. They know nothing of it and think Will’s medallion is the last.” Elizabeth looked slightly afraid, Will stepped closer.

“I want you to swear an oath to me then.” Oria closed her eyes and resisted the urge to rub her temples.

“Not another one please, I can barely remember them all.” Will ignored her.

“I want you to swear you will give Elizabeth the same protection as I have from my fathers’ oath.” She rolled her eyes, “In return I will give you anything you want.” She glared at him before sighing, she knew what he felt and she knew she couldn’t refuse him because of it.

“A promise of no more bloody oaths Master Turner.” She whispered as Will grinned and held his hand out, she shook it resignedly, “I can tell I am going to regret this.” She turned to Elizabeth with a sarcastic welcoming grin, “Welcome to the club Miss Swann. There are very few people I don’t protect but please do feel exclusive.” Oria glared at Will, he merely smiled happy with the turn of events, Elizabeth stepped forwards.

“I think you’re despicable.” Oria grinned and buckled the guard and coin back onto her wrist. She stepped up and patted the girls’ cheek gently.

“Better to be on the right hand of the devil than in its’ path pet. You won’t regret young Wills’ oath.” She turned back to tightening ropes as Will dragged an angry Elizabeth away.
