Nightmares and Comfort

Nursing Jack was not that difficult and actually quite pleasant work. He submitted to her care with a sort of bemusement that might have turned rebellious from time to time if he hadn’t been quite so ill. It was plain that he was not used to people being kind to him. Molly did not understand how people could be cruel to each other at all but found it even harder to fathom how one could be so to a man like Jack, even if he was a pirate.

Molly mused on all this one night sitting in the kitchen sipping a cup of chamomile tea. Her thoughts were broken by fretful cries from the sickroom. She set down her cup with a slight clatter and hurried in to see what the matter was.

Jack tossed and turned in a fitful sleep, crying out in inarticulate terror.

“Jack!” Molly gently but firmly shook him awake. “Wake up... it’s nothing but a dream.”

Jack sprang into a more upright position and threw his arms around Molly’s neck. Molly swallowed her surprise and returned the abrupt embrace around his trembling, scalding form. “I wish it was... Damn Barbossa... I’ll have my revenge...”

“Shhh...” Molly ignored the hot tears running down her neck. “I know.” She eased him back onto the pillows. “Try and go back to sleep.”

Jack nodded and closed his eyes. Molly quietly withdrew from the room.

As Molly got ready for bed, a weird foreboding seized her. She slipped her nightgown on and went back to Jack’s room.

Sure enough it seemed the nightmare was returning. Jack moaned and whimpered in his sleep, tossing slightly from side to side.

Molly could not entirely say what made her do so, but she drew back the blankets on the bed and crawled in next to the ailing pirate, slipping her arms around him and resting her head against his shoulder. The fretful noises ceased and Jack’s body relaxed in her embrace.

As for Molly, she could not imagine a more delightful spot to be in, curled next to Jack like this. She ignored the feverish heat radiating from his slender frame and soon fell into contented sleep.
