Chapter 2 – If Only

It had been three weeks since Tortuga; everything had been at peace on the surface, not even the ocean daring to disturb them with even a hint of a storm. Almost as if the waves themselves knew of the tempest that would soon arise boiling and furious to disturb the tranquillity that had settled over the ship. Jack smiled broadly as his spyglass clattered shut and his hands returned to the wheel. “How’d you fancy that there ship Gibbs? Think it’ll provide a good haul?” Jack queried, already knowing the answer, his eyes resting on the small transport which was slung low in the water with the weight of its goods and rich passengers. Gibbs nodded enthusiastically and began to chide the crew into action.

They needed hardly any encouragement, this was the first piece of action in days, no ships had sailed by or if they had they had been war ships and hastily avoided in favour of less volatile and wealthier prey. This had been much to Oria’s silent disappointment.

Jack began to turn the Pearl towards the transport with an evil grin, imagining all of the rich ladies with their heavy jewels, easily taken and sold on for an equally hefty price. Oria watched the ship as they neared, panic setting in as the pirate ship approached. The classic signs of the rich and foolish aristocracy, they were the easiest of all people to fall so easily prey to worry and panic, especially where pirates were concerned.

“It’s a colony ship; best bet is it’s from England,” She shouted over the deck her initial excitement now severely depleted. “We won’t be needing much force to subdue this lot.” Oria mocked the ship as they approached, fighting down the instant lack of enthusiasm at the absence of any challenge. The Pearl’s cannons rolled out more in warning than intent of action, though they needn’t have, the other ship was merely bobbing on the ocean absently awaiting their arrival. The ships brushed together and the pirates poured aboard with raucous shouts. A handful of marines and armed gentlemen met them and were subdued swiftly without any deaths to either side, the worst injury being to a pirate who had a scrape above his eyes from being hit over the head with a fan by an over-zealous woman.

“Now all we want is a little co-operation with the handing over of valuable items. No blood will be shed if you do this without question.” Jack proclaimed, with an exaggerated sway as he dropped down onto the ship’s deck and began to separate one woman from a heavily precious-stone encrusted silver necklace.

She squealed loudly in fright at the rough caress of the pirate’s fingers, Jack winced and altered his command. “Also without the usual hysterical screeching if you don’t mind too much. Pirates also have ears and use them just as much as non-pirates. Therefore, them being intact would be far more preferable than ringing.” Jack glowered at the now quietly sobbing woman for a few seconds before moving on to the next one and assisting her in removing a small diamond choker. The woman’s age-thickened fingers were proving more of a hindrance than assistance as they trembled with fear but Jack was in no rush. His eyes were warily latched on to Oria who was currently coercing a gentleman into handing over his emerald encrusted snuff box. He was watching for any inkling of foul play on the man’s part.

:/

Oria as always was the last to leave the ship as the final gems, jewels and trinkets were deposited on the deck of the Pearl. No one noticed the faint grimace of disappointment that flitted over her features due to not a single one of the civilians or marines even attempting to start a skirmish. She stepped onto the plank that was precariously balanced across the gap only to be stopped by a hand grasping her wrist tightly. The gentleman who had owned the emerald studded snuff box glared up at her furiously.

“You think you’ll get away with this then you’re wrong pirate whore,” The man hissed furiously, Oria snapped her wrist free with a roll of her eyes and continued on her way to the Pearl. “They’re out to get you now. All pirates it said, all pirates to be slaughtered on sight or held for interrogation pending trial at ports around the world. There’s no where for you to run now you wretches.” He shouted across the widening gap, his face becoming a deeper and deeper crimson as the Pearl pulled away and headed back into open ocean.

Oria frowned at the man’s words and turned to Jack, “What do you think he meant?” Jack initially ignored her question, being too preoccupied with getting his Captain’s share of the loot. Smacking several hands away from the prize pieces in order to claim them for his own, he was also drawing out Oria’s share as his own seeing as she continually failed to claim it.

“Who meant what?” he finally responded while hugging the ramble of objects and jewels to his chest and heading to the cabin, Oria in tow and annoyed at his delayed response.

“That man on the transport. He said pirates were being hunted and some held for interrogation.” Oria whispered as they entered the cabin, Jack being once again fully occupied with rooting through the various objects that were now sprawled on his desk.

“Nothing, most likely just trying to scare us. After all, we did just rob them blind,” he absently stated in a distant manner while holding up a monocle with a confused look while attempting vainly to tug the cork out of a rum bottle. Oria held a dagger out to him, he took it swiftly and skewered the cork with a satisfied smile as he took a swig and went back to studying the collection.

“Either way, perhaps we should have more on watch duty till we get to port and can confirm what he said as either true or false.” Oria continued to argue her one sided conversation her frustration increasing at the pirate’s attitude. Her brow was furrowed, contemplating the various angles of the man’s speech, attempting to find any ulterior meanings. Slowly she sat back onto the edge of the desk, mildly startled from her pondering by the chill of a metal chain against her throat. She glanced down at the small trinket, a small floral pattern in silver and crowned with a couple of sapphires and pearl teardrop.

Jack was already back to rooting through the rest of the various objects, tipping up a small jewellery box and inspecting its various trinkets. “I’ll go and tell the crew to set up double watches. While I’m at it, I’ll also go find the cabin-boy to entertain me.” Oria intoned, not expecting a response and was rewarded in her assumption by Jack nodding absently while running his fingers over a hairpin that appeared to be dripping with diamonds. She smiled faintly in amusement at his distraction, knowing that if he had heard the last comment the treasure would soon have been forgotten in favour of hunting down and killing the poor unsuspecting cabin-boy.

“What?” He queried a few minutes later, glancing around the room startled to not find her there. Soon forgetting his worries as his fingers rifled through the mess of necklaces and earrings, he grimaced at a knot in a bundle of trinkets and began to untangle it with a frown and deep swig of rum.

:/

“Gibbs,” Oria jogged up to the helm only to find the First Mate also in a euphoric state, his eyes on a small pile of the jewels piled haphazardly on the planks by the helm. “Gibbs.” The man didn’t even glance up or give any indication that he knew she was there or even existed for that matter. Oria knelt in front of him and repeated his name a couple more times before giving up the idea as a lost cause while loot was still fresh on the pirate’s minds.

She settled for maintaining a watch alone as the Black Pearl rocked quietly on the ocean, nothing any where on the horizon, not even the wisp of a cloud on the distant line where sky and sea met. So silent and still, it was almost as if nothing existed beyond the edges of the ship except mile after mile of ocean.

The tentacle like thoughts crept back into her mind, teasing at her consciousness and begging to be acknowledged. Slowly she found they infected her thoughts, tearing them apart as the Kraken would tear a ship to shreds, removing any semblance of the original.

They were too tempting in their promises and whispers to be ignored, reinforced by the transport situation. She knew why Jack was avoiding any fights; the silly boy was being over protective both of his ship and her. If only he would realise that there was more than one way to lose what he believed he had rightly earned. If only he could see and feel what she could, if only he understood the tentacles that drove into her thoughts and what they whispered to her. If only… the door of the Captain’s cabin blew open and Jack bounded up the steps to the helm his face in a fury.

“What cabin-boy?” he proclaimed, Oria merely smiled if a little cruelly.
