For love or Kingdom

Jareth picked at his dinner listening to his siblings chattering, Zenith was going on about a new flower they had put into the garden, and Remus and Rygell were going on about a new book they had discovered in the family’s seemingly endless library, while Elisa listened patiently to them all from her seat at the opposite end of the table from her brother. She smiled and ooued and ahhed at her younger brothers triumphs of the day. She looked down at Jareth and felt a soft crease form in her brow. Jareth was suffering in silence, he missed Sarah, he was lonely… And she knew that.. They were scheduled to attend a ball next week, maybe someone else would tempt his fancy. She sighed, maybe that lovely Mayanne that had her eye on her dear brother would insight his lonely gaze.

Jareth’s mind was filled with images of that smooth pale skin and soft blonde hair… It was all he could think about. He had to go see her again…He wanted to hear her voice… He had to go to her now. He stood abruptly knocking his goblet and plate from the table as he walked away from his untouched meal and surprised family. Elisa sighed and bit her lips, “finish your dinner and get ready for bed, I’ll come and check in on the three of you when I've seen to Jareth.” She said kissing her youngest brother’s head before she followed Jareth with more grace than he had left the table with.

“Jareth!” She called after her brother, the soft tapping of her shoes on the stone floor as she moved quickly after her brother, “Jareth! You can’t just run away when ever you feel like it!” She said putting her hand on his shoulder, “you cannot keep running off to the other world when ever you want. You have duties you have neglected here for far too long. I’m not equipped to make the decisions that have to be made. The Goblins are starving in the streets while we sit and waste what we do not deserve.” She said moving to face her brother, “we have to do something, YOU have to do something.” She said putting her hands on her narrow hips, “now, are you going to keep staring into a crystal to watch a girl that may not even remember you. Or are you going to take care of your siblings and the people of your kingdom.” She asked him as she looked up into his steely eyes. “Make your choice Brother.”

He looked down at his younger sister, she was wise far beyond her years, and though it pained him… She was right. His people here in the Goblin city needed him more than Sarah. She was beautiful and successful, and bound to find someone that deserved her. Though he would never think anyone his equal. “I will stay, and get my Kingdom in order. Maybe we could increase farming elsewhere. Worry less about the tending of the labyrinth. He looked at Elisa and kissed her forehead, “thank you for reminding me of what I am here to do my dear little sister.”

She smiled a sad little smile and touched his cheek, “someday Jareth, you’ll find someone to love you, as much as you love Sarah. Or, maybe she’ll call out to you to come and take her away as she once called before.” She said before she closed her eyes, “come on, you need to eat something before you collapse. I’ve got you another plate at your seat in the dining room, and I’ve got the boys getting ready for bed. Just relax for tonight, we can face the problems of the world together tomorrow.”

He nodded and felt his shoulders droop as he walked back towards the dining room. And sure enough, as he reached his seat, there was a fresh, hot plate of food, and a fresh goblet of water at his seat. He still wasn’t hungry though.

Elisa poked her head into Zenith's room as he was pulling a book from his shelf, “good night my little sun.” She said with a little grin, “sleep well, I’ll see you in the morning when you rise.” She said blowing out the candle nearest the door. She had been the one taking care of him since they were little, being the only girl in house full of men, her maternal instincts came easily, and she loved caring for her brothers.

Elisa moved from the room, extinguishing the ceiling lamp with a soft snap of her fingers. She needed to check in on Jareth again before indulging herself in her guilty pleasure…

Jareth had left his hardly touched food on the table and was standing looking out over his city… It was such a lonely place, but soon, his home would be filled with the sounds of guests and partygoers to an almost alarming rate, and every single woman of merit would be swarming after him, and he would have no escape. Unless his Sarah could say those wonderful words.

Elisa saw her brother just as he was replaced with that of a beautiful snowy owl that flew away from the balcony. She sighed and crossed her arms, it was hopeless. He wouldn’t leave Sarah alone, not for long anyway. He was far too in love…
“That may have been the most painful experience I’ve had in a long long while.” Sarah murmured to herself as she locked her front door behind herself. It was a blustery evening and her hair was windswept to a degree that she was almost afraid to try and brush it out. She left her coat on the railing of the staircase as she tugged her shirt off of her back.

Her parents had ambushed her with pleas to reconsider her career, that they would help her go back to school to become something, and do something with her life. She had politely declined, and looked at Toby like she was going to leap across the table at him. She knew this was going to happen, it always did.. They just couldn’t leave her be, it was something every time she was home. Move home, go back to school, take Toby for the weekend, why are you such a bad influence, it was horribly obnoxious. Over dinner she had decided to ignore her parents as she picked at her food, her mother was hounding her about her lack of dating life…and proceeded to ask her if she was secretly a lesbian… Sarah had been busy trying to remember how she had found the other world to begin with. She had been mad at Toby… But then she went blank. Nothing else seemed to quite click into place… She wanted to go back, she wanted to find her friends, her King again.
