Until we meet again..

Until We Meet Again...

summary: Jill and Jack part ways..for now.

Jill and Jack caught up with the Runner and her crew in New Orleans after their visit with Tia Dalma. He'd been very quiet, which was rather unusual for Jack. Back at sea her lessons in swordplay and ship terminology continued. She grew taller, hitting a growth spurt on the journey that put her almost eye level with Jack's mouth. Which was a tempting notion for Jill.

Jack couldn't help noticing that Jill was turning into a lovely and salty young woman. Her work with the sword made her quick, her work on the ship made her strong and even in somewhat ill fitting trousers and simple shirts, he could see that Jill was not going to stay a curveless little waif for long. Other sailors on the crew began noticing too. His guilt over Jill's plight had kept him at arm's length from the little lass, but now as her time grew short so did his patience.

One evening after dinner, Jill was crouched on deck, scrubbing at a stubborn stain from a man's upheaval and cursing at it under her breath.

"wobbly-legged fools shouldn't be drinkin' so much if they can't hold it in better than this.." Jill had scrubbed the deck until her hands were sore, her hair stuck to the back of her neck and the sides of her face. She stopped with a sigh and sat up on her knees, stretching her back and making her shoulders pop with her hands high over her head. She shook her hair out, and then set about twisting it into a bun again.

Jack had been watching from the steps below the helm. Her shape silouhetted by the moonlight bouncing off the sea, she looked graceful and young and perfect. It alarmed him to find his guts twisting at the sight of the pretty young girl. It wasn't right for him to think of her this way, not right at all. She was far too young, far too innocent..wait..no she wasn't. Not innnocent,..well in some manner of speaking yes,..but she was a pirate in training, she could not remain innocent for long. And he'd been younger than her when he'd had his first kiss, what harm could a kiss do? She'd gotten to her feet and was walking to dump the scrub bucket over the side when Jack popped back out of his reverie. That's when he saw that HE was not the only one who'd been watching Jill. Jack rose slowly to his feet and watched as a small member of the crew, a young man of about 22 was walking toward Jill.

"Evenin' Missy, ye did a fine job on the deck, come an' have a drink with me." he said.

Jill turned her eyes to the young man, he was handsome in a way, with his dark skin and even teeth. "No thank you, I don't drink. I'll just go get my dinner and.."

He interrupted her by grasping her arm, she could smell the rum on his breath and wrinkled her nose.

"I asked ye nicely, missy, shall I ask ye again the hard way?" he breathed, pulling her towards him.

Jill was infuriated, she did not cry out for Jack, nor for any help at all. Rather she gritted her teeth and at the last moment, she stomped her foot down HARD on his, raking her foot down his shin as she did so. He howled with pain and she threw her elbow into his stomach, he bent with the force of it and she reared her head back and smashed her forehead into his nose. Blood spurted on the clean deck, and she last bashed him over the head with the scrub bucket. He fell to the deck with a groan.

Jack had watched it all happen with his eyes wide. She'd learned all that from him and now she stood triumphant over the sailor, her hands on her hips. She drew back her foot to kick him in the side as Jack touched her elbow. He'd crept up on her quietly. She let out a gasp and clenched her fist, she'd drawn back to punch him, but he held his hand up to catch her fist as he spun her around. Jill felt the world tilt as she turned, her fist impacting with Jack's hand. She had a split second to growl before she noticed who it was! Her eyes went wide and her mouth fell open. She had a crazy second where she noticed everything, the light in his eyes, the pleased smile on his face, the light off his gold tooth, the warmth of his hand around her fist, his hand on the small of her back, the tiniest jingle of the ornaments in his hair..when it ended. She'd been pulled against his chest and his lips touched hers. Jill let out a sound she'd never made before, her free arm went around his shoulders, she could feel his hair against her hand, her arm. He pulled her other hand to his shoulder and let it go, one hand at the small of her back the other on the back of her head. She kissed him and it set a flame burning inside of her young heart.

Jack didn't know what he was doing. He knew only that it felt strangely right and that she was kissing him back. He knew she'd have to leave all too soon. He knew she was his to protect, that he shouldn't be doing this, but how could he not?! It was Jill who pressed back against his hand to draw her lips away from his. He loosened his grip on her and she inhaled softly. He looked down at her face, her lips full from the kiss, her cheeks flushed so sweet and...god he wanted her right then, his hands ached with the effort not to just take her.

"Jack,..I.." she couldn't speak.

"I know,..I shouldn't have done that." Jack looked away, dropping his hands to her sides, resting them on her waist. She kept her hands on his shoulders.

"No Jack..I wanted you to. If there was anyone here that I'd.." she paused and swallowed hard, "We'll be in Shipwreck Cove in 2 days." she slipped her hands down his chest and folded her arms around herself.

"Aye,..and you can't stay here with me." Jack nodded, pulling his hands away from her reluctantly.

"Then come with me, I don't want to leave you. You saved my life Jack, I l-.." Jill looked up at him but he put his finger against her lips to stop her.

"My time is not up. I have to stay with the runner until I've paid my time. You have a future ahead of you and you'll be safe with Teague. Just..tell him Tia Dalma sent you, he'll understand." Jack said and as much as he hated it, he took a step back from her.

"But Jack.." Jill tilted her head and felt tears stinging at her eyes, she didn't understand, neither did he.

"I'm no good for you Jill, I'm no good for anyone but myself. I have a quest and so do you, that's just how it is, Savvy?" Jack drew himself up proudly and looked down at her.

Jill felt a tear threaten to fall from her eye and brushed at it angrily with the back of her hand, "Quests and Destinies and bollocks! We make our own destinies Jack Sparrow, you told me that. it's what Pirates do,..and.." she lost her words again as he shook his head and turned to walk away.

"you are my future Jack.." Jill said softly as his boots made soft sounds on the deck. She shivered alone on deck, except for the unconscious man behind her. He moaned just a little and she turned and kicked him in the ribs, "feckless ingrate" she muttered and snatched the bottle of rum from beside his head. She turned her angry dejected eyes in the direction Jack had gone and drank deeply from the bottle. It burned her throat and hit her stomach like a brick. She let the bottle drop on her arm again and took a deep breath. She leaned on the railing with the bottle clenched in her hand. "You'll see Jack Sparrow, you'll see."

The next 2 days Jill practiced subtle and wicked ways of teasing Jack. He'd remember her, he'd never forget her. She was determined to make sure of it. She'd bend to lace her boot when he passed, tossed things at him just to make him catch them, any and more ideas to make him look at her,..but she said not a word. She only smiled to herself, knowing she was somehow torturing him.

Jack figured out what she was doing quickly. She was so devilishly clever. He'd catch glimpses, the curve of her backside when she bent down, the shape of her chest when she'd pull on a guideline, tiny glimpses of her smile when the wind caught her hair. It made him ache, made him want her, but there were other things more important. His ship, his soul. She could never know those things, could never know that his soul had been sold to Davy Jones and that without his ship he'd never find a way to buy it back.

When they reached Shipwreck Cove, the crew started unloading the rum cargo. The Captain shook Jill's hand and wished her well with a smile. His men had learned quick after the night she'd taken down Dobbs singlehanded. The Captain guided her to the gangplank and patted her shoulder.

"You're a tough lass, Jill Wright. Best of luck." he said and went on to direct the crew.

Jack sidled up to the plank and gave Jill a deep bow, "A truce love, an end to these teasing hostilities so I might say farewell?"

"I have my quest and you have yours Jack Sparrow, isn't that what you said?" Jill said icily, but charmed by his attempt.

"Aye,..but once I get the Pearl back, things will be different. I can come back for you and we can sail together. Anywhere we want to go, eh?" Jack offered with a smile and an outstretched hand.

"No Jack, when you see me again, I'll be Captain of my own ship and then we'll see who sails with whom." Jill said, but took his hand and shook it.

"I'd like to see that, Jilly." Jack said and grasped her hand tightly, pulling her close. She turned her head at the last moment and caught his kiss on her cheek.

"Once is enough..for now..Jack. but don't worry,..I'll never forget you." Jill said with a smile and kissed his lips, soft, sweet and quick.

Jack blinked, shocked that she'd dodged him and then kissed him on her own terms. "Nor I you love,..nor I you."

Jill walked down the plank into Shipwreck Cove's harbor and disappeared into the crowd of pirates. Jack returned to work on the Runner...and despite his promise, many years passed and Jill Wright slipped slowly to the very back of his mind..and eventually he forgot all about her.
