Chapter three: The Noose Tightens

Day Five-

At Arbitrator HQ, H’dlak-di is seated at her console; there are a multitude of windows open on her screen with information pertaining to the case. Something is bothering her ‘why would a new port inspector start overcharging and nitpicking?’ She gets up and stretches; she has been at it all morning.

“Deputy, how much did that inspector skim again?”

“Looks like 100,000 credits”.

She makes a noise of surprise. “That much over a quarter season?”
“Mmhmmm”

H’dlak-di asks, “I wonder where it went; check for bank transactions”

“Right away”

This takes most of the afternoon; there are at least ten different financial institutions involved. The deputy stops by, “They will have the information to us by the morning at the latest”

“All right, we’ll hit it again tomorrow”.

Day Six, that morning-

The deputy hurries in to H’dlak-di’s office “I just got the last couple reports on those money transactions”

“You couldn’t just send it?”

“No, too sensitive”

“What is too sensitive, where did that money go?”

“The Ferengyi Embassy, hand carried”

“WHAT??!!??” She sits back down and motions for the data; she pops it in and brings up the information. “Oh great Paya preserve us, this is bad! Deputy, get me those big theft cases”

“Which ones?”

“Those unsolved ones, that big highjacking this quarter-season, the weapons merchants’ big data loss just before that”.

The deputy goes back to his office to pull the cases and transmit them to her. In the meantime she ponders the information, putting her thoughts into the notes section of her screen.
‘Tech info gone missing then highjacking, …..thing in common is it involves weapons… plasma weapons’

She sits back in her chair with a sickening feeling in the pit of her stomach.

‘Oh, nooooo, why didn’t I see it before… the MONEY. The key is the money, where there is a Ferengyi ALWAYS follow the pauk-de money’.

She continues her train of thought ‘Embassies have diplomatic privilege, anything can go thru them, and they are notorious for employing spies! So go back to the beginning, where were those highjacked weapons last seen? OH C’JIT, the PORT!!!’

She backs up some on the notes; ‘Strike that ‘pauk’ and ‘OH C’JIT.’

She searches the highjack data, and sure enough, the last place the cargo was seen was at the port, but never got to its destination the next day. The deputy comes back to her office.

“Deputy, is there any gkinmaru footage of that area that night?”

“No, the sensor near that ship was broken, no evidence, no case”

“Can we check whether a Ferengyi went in the main gate of the port that night?”

The deputy raises his upper mandibles in a grin, “Now THAT we DO have, let me do some digging” He checks with Security; soon he comes back, waving a vid disc “Got it! Sensor shows a reading consistent with a Ferengyi’s that night!”

“Who else went in….or OUT?” They skim through the footage.

The deputy points at the screen, “Hey, that’s odd, after the Ferengyi came in, there’s an unmarked ground hauler went in and out; readings show a bunch of our offloaders”

“Do a badge check, it’ll show who it is.”

They check with the port and get the names by the time lunch is over.

“Well, all of those offloaders were also in that bar brawl; Parole put trackers on ‘em so we’d know if they went in there again, so we can find ‘em anywhere!”

H’dlak-di smiles, “So who says Paya doesn’t dispense divine justice! We’ll bring ‘em in, find out where they went that night.”

“What about that data theft at PlasmaDyne the weapons merchant?”

She replies, “Check to see where that Ferengyi worked before he started at the port”

The deputy hurries off to order the roundup of the offloaders and to check that lead.

H’dlak-di enters the info into her screens. ‘Now we have that Ferengyi overcharging and sending the embassy money, then he was at the port when those plasmacasters went missing, now where did he work before the port? And where did those weapons go?’

Toward the end of the day, the deputy comes in with a grim look on his face.
H’dlak-di looks up from her report, “What is it, Deputy?”

“That inspector worked for PlasmaDyne for three seventurns- the same time frame as the data theft!”

H’dlak-di sighs “Go home and get some rest, we’ll need it tomorrow when we get those offloaders”

Day seven-

The offloaders are brought in and questioned. They say the Ferengyi had offered them overtime pay if they could come in and offload a ship and deliver the cargo- to the Ferengan Embassy!

H’dlak-di adds this to her report and then contacts PlasmaDyne Security asking who was last in the data room the day of the data theft. “Send me the names”

At midday, the names come through; there is only one- the Ferengyi.

She includes this information and completes the file; she then asks for Arbitrator Security. “I want this encoded Top Secret and sent to SpecOps; make it to the attention of the Chief Arbitrator!”

“Right away, but it may be awhile before he gets here, he’s out on a mission”

“Doesn’t matter, mark it Urgent; knowing him, he’ll bend all the laws of physics to get here!”

Day eight, somewhere in space-

A sleek but well-worn Yautja ship on autonav is on its way to the Homeworld, its pilot the Chief Arbitrator is sound asleep.

RRRAWWWWK-RRRAWWWK!
“MMph!” The Chief turns over and puts his bedcovers over his head.

RRRAWWWWK-RRRAWWWK!
“Whuh?” He thinks ‘how did I get home so fast, sounds like my neighbor’s male rjet….’

RRRAWWWW- smash ‘That’ll shut that tarei’hsan up’
FZZZT-FZZZT-FZZZT!

By now the Chief is fully awake, he has thrown a shoe at the sound; it has struck his bedroom com panel and damaged it; it is emitting a crackling sound.
He sits up and realizes what has happened.

‘All right, who’s the last hac’nikt worked on the com?’ He remembers. ‘Oh great, that practical joker reprogrammed the chime to sound like a rjet; he knows I hate that noise, especially in the morning. Well at least I still have good aim!’

He gets up and checks his messages and sees the one marked ‘Top Secret Urgent’.

He settles into the cockpit chair, muttering ‘C’jit! No R&R for me just yet…I’ll check this one out myself as soon as I get home.’

He puts his feet up on the console. He starts reading the file, beginning with the price gouging ‘Hah, just what I expect from a Ferengyi….but is that reason enough to bother ME with it?’

He continues reading and gets to the part about the bar brawl. ‘Hmmm, that’s my favorite eatery; I’d bust him for THAT, but why elevate it? H’dlak-di would’ve handled it already.’

Now he gets to the meat of it, the money laundering and finally the heist and spying. He brings his feet off the console with a thud; leans forward in amazement ‘Bogu moya, now THIS is serious c’jit; NOW I know why H’dlak-di passed it up to me!’

He sends the acknowledgement, “Received. Returning hot”
He pours on the speed to the maximum the ship can handle.
