Welcome Home

************************************************************************************
Thanks again for more views! ^_^ They really make my day. Amaria1, please don’t worry, she’s not going to be all weak and pathetic, because that’s not how the Sarah character is, but there will be fine tweaks with all the characters as personalities do change a bit with age. If you’re looking for a fic where Sarah is a simpering girl and Jareth becomes a lovesick puppy, this is not the fic for you.
Thanks again to Kit for being my beta!

There will be a short break in between chapters because I'll be gone for the weekend. Hang tight, keep reading and reviewing please!

Goblins were a very strange lot. They were loud, smelly, dressed poorly, and drank more than 3 times their weight every day. Basically, they are the fey version of the Irish. Sometimes they even proved useful when they could actually remember what they had been told to do. Honestly, they were fun to kick too.

Jareth rolled his eyes at the various piles of goblins in his throne room. They were drunk and snoring as usual. He supposed it was a very good thing he didn’t have company very often, but he had made sure of that centuries ago just by becoming the Goblin King.

He picked his way through the mess of subjects. He stepped around or over most, but every now and again gave one a vicious tap with his riding crop. They jumped so high, and screamed so loud. What a pity the lesson never seemed to take. That thought of course turned his mind reeling towards someone else who never quite gotten the lesson, at least not the last time he had seen her. In sudden spite a small brown speckled goblin took an unplanned flight to the other side of the room.

He smiled to himself again.

Perhaps it was time to say hello.

Hoggle patted her hand as she took one final sniff. The old dwarf’s eyes seemed almost as close to tears as hers.

“He didn’t mean it Sarah.” He said roughly. “He’s only a boy.”

Sarah snorted. “He had to me a little for it to happen, didn’t he?” She bit the inside of her lip. She didn’t want to cry, she hadn’t crying.

Hoggle’s mouth opened and closed a few times, trying to think of the right thing to say, but in a place like this their really wasn’t anything you could say. Though he did find it a bit ironic that the same lad she wished away just five years ago had turned around and done the same thing to her. But he wasn’t gone to say it.

“Well at least that bastard Jareth didn’t get ta yer first.” He eyes gleamed with defiance, and he had to give himself a bit of a pat on the back for coming up with that one.

Sarah stared curiously at the wall. “I wonder why.” She said softly.

“Does it matter?” Hoggle huffed. “You really want to see that pompous, prissy excuse for a King?”

“Pompous I can see, but prissy? Come now Higgles.” Hoggle and Sarah both jumped.

There stood the Goblin King in all his glory. He didn’t look different at all for all the years she had been gone. He still wore the poet shirt that when she was 15 hadn’t mattered much, but now she noticed that it was cut fairly low in the front. Thankfully the ruffle of the neckline was pushed in by the blood red leather jacket that made his shoulders larger and his waist narrow. She refused to look directly at the black tights that led to matching leather boots.

Jareth smirked at the two of them. Hoggle looked ready to soil himself, and Sarah….Sarah was unreadable.

Hoggle grumbled incoherently for a moment before jumping from his seat and waggling his finger at the King. “Now here Jareth, this be me private property!”

Jareth pulled his eyes from the girl just long enough to put the dwarf in his place. “Really Hebble? Because I do remember a bargain being made for this,” he looked around the tiny place with disgust, “charming home.”

A home that had grown a bit taller in order to accommodate the Goblin Kings height. Always has to be intimidating, Sarah thought snidely.

“Oorreeg!” Hoggle’s face had started turning purple in rage. “It’s Hoggle! And a deal is a deal! It’s my home and you’re not welcome here!” He poked the King viciously in the leg.

Sarah looked on the scene in disbelief. Hoggle had definitely found some of his courage before she had left, but she had never seen him have this much of a back bone with the Goblin King before. Jareth’s face was a mask of icy rage.

“You haven’t held your end of the deal Hoggle.” He said in a dangerously quiet voice.

Hoggle jumped all color and rage seeping from his face. He was very near quaking on the spot. Thought to soon, Sarah thought a little amused, but upset for Hoggle at the same time.

“I did what yer asked didn’t I?” Hoggle took a few steps back. “You didn’t ask beyond that.”

Sarah was looking between the two of them. She had this odd feeling in the pit of her stomach, that something wasn’t right here at all.

“Yes you did, didn’t you?” Jareth’s eyes fell back on Sarah. “I was just coming to tell Sarah welcome home.”

The smile he gave her was all predator. She had to hold back the shiver that wanted to run through her body. She wasn’t sure if it was fear or something else, but either way it was not the time to analyze it. Sarah stood, crossing her arms in front of her.

“What is that supposed to mean?” She tried to look just as smug as he did. Jareth just smiled at her.

Pushing a now nervous wreck of an excuse for a Hoggle out of the way, Jareth walked closer to Sarah. His movements slowed and measured as if she were a gazelle ready to sprint.

“I thought I said it very clearly Sarah.” He gave her a very appraising look. “I see you’ve grown up a bit.”

Sarah fought down the urge to stick her tongue out. “One of us had to.” She snipped back.
He raised his eyebrow, a look that forced Sarah once again to ignore that fact that she had in fact grown up a bit. Something that was becoming increasing difficult with the Goblin King leaning so close to her that his white blonde hair brushed her cheek.

“Maybe in your process of gaining maturity, you should have remembered that decency requires for you to put clothes on.” He whispered in her. Sarah’s face burned with embarrassment. Of course with how late it had been she had already changed into her pajamas which consisted of a flimsy; dark green silk camisole and matching shorts. “Not that I’m complaining.”

Sarah gasped in shock and took a step back, glaring at him even though she knew her cheeks were a bright red against her normally pale skin. “I didn’t think you knew the meaning of the word decent.”

The playful look melted away from Jareth’s face and was replaced once more with that icy rage. This Sarah could handle. She knew this version of him much better.

“I see you’re tongue hasn’t dulled over the years.” He moved away from her quickly, almost causing her to fall over. “What a pity.”

“She doesn’t mean any harm your majesty.” Hoggle said quietly. The two had completely forgotten that the dwarf was still there.

“Doesn’t she?” He asked incredulously. “I remember otherwise.”

Sarah’s heart plummeted into her stomach. She couldn’t explain why. Perhaps it was the memory of wishing her brother away, something she still hasn’t forgiven herself for. Or perhaps it was that look in her adversary’s eyes. She couldn’t place what it was. Anger, betrayal, hurt?

“We’ll have centuries to fix that however.” He smiled at her again as if he knew something she didn’t. Which of course he did, but he liked to drag things out she had discovered. “Until then, maybe a little trip to humble you, dear Sarah.” He brought his hand up level with his face where a crystal appear, and with snake like speed he threw it at Sarah, where it popped like a bubble and she vanished.
