“Please I wouldn’t want to impose.” Katarina started to say.
“Nonsense, let’s get your stuff set up and then grab a bite to eat. Our reservation is for eight o’clock and it’s only six now, we have time. Now where did you park your car?” Rachel said with finality to her tone.
“If you both insist. I parked the car in the front of the building; it’s the blue mini cooper.” Katarina replied to the determined woman.
“Harvey do you mind helping us?” asked Rachel.
“No not at all.” replied Harvey as he took of his jacket and headed inside of Rachel’s apartment, returning a few minutes later.
“Miss Rachel, do you think I’ll get to meet Batman?” asked J.C who had been quiet since his introduction.
“Well this is his city, so you just might.” Giving J.C a smile Rachel headed down the hall with Harvey, Katarina and J.C on tow to go unload the boxes into her apartment.
Chapter Three: In To the Gentry Jungle
After a few short trips to the car, thanks largely to Harvey, which took no more then twenty minutes, Rachel and Katarina were able to place the boxes in their respected rooms. The rooms were virtually identical except for color arrangement; J.C’s room was a light blue with white undertones, from wall to furniture, while Katarina’s room was a neutral white, soft and delicate.
“I can help you unpack tomorrow so you can change for dinner, then we’ll talk in the living room.” Rachel said after showing Katarina her room.
“Thank you again Rachel, this is really nice of you. I do have a question, though. What should I wear?” With a nervous chuckle Katrina motioned to her casual state of dress, “Something tells me they won’t let me in with ripped jeans.”
With a short laugh Rachel responded, “Probably not. I believe a formal suit or an evening dress will be fine. Nothing too fancy.”
“Okay. I think I have a suit in these boxes somewhere. But first I should go help J.C get ready.” Giving Rachel a smile Katarina made her way to her son’s room down the hall.
Rachel sighed and thought out loud, “Now to soothe Harvey’s ego a bit. He’s really too nice for his own good.”
“Hey baby, so you like your room?” Katarina asked leaning onto the door frame as she watched her son dig through his backpack searching for something.
“Yeah, mom it’s really nice. Miss Rachel and Mr. Harvey are nice too. Don’t you think?” Pausing momentarily to answer his mother’s question, J.C wasted no time in continuing his search as his mother replied.
“Yes they seem like great people. J.C what are you looking for?” Katarina asked, though she had a pretty good idea of what he was after.
“Looking for the album Mom, you said it was in the backpack.”
Bingo!
Stepping into the room Katarina sat on the floor beside J.C and took the backpack from him. She pulled the Velcro off of a semi-hidden compartment of the back and took out a large baby blue photo album. The inscription on the cover, written in glittering silver said, Jackson Charles Napier.
“Here you go honey.” Katarina passed the photo album to her son’s waiting arms.
“Thanks Mom!” J.C stood up and placed the photo album on his night stand gently and carefully as if it were made of glass.
“J.C we have to get you dressed, we’re going to a fancy restaurant tonight. So be on your best behavior. Got it?” Katrina also stood up; she began to rummage around the boxes searching for appropriate attire. Settling for a pair of beige pants, long sleeve green shirt and a wily coyote tie, Katarina addressed her son.
“Let’s get you changed. We’ll dress in my room” Taking her son’s hand, Katarina proceeded to drag her son out of his room and into her own. J.C’s mock cries of outrage and play struggle entertained them both along the short way.
Rachel walked in the living room after Katarina went to help her son. Harvey sat on her couch, looking for all intents and purposes as if he lived in the apartment. An arm was stretched out along the back of the couch and his left ankle was neatly placed on his right knee. His eyes were closed and he relaxed.
“Making yourself right at home I see.” Standing in front of a surprised Harvey, Rachel gave him a quick peck on the lips and settled in the space next to him before continuing. “Harvey I’m really sorry I forgot about our date. It’s just since I found out she was coming I’ve been putting off cleaning those rooms and really lost my mind today when I realized she was arriving. Worked myself into a cleaning frenzy.”
“Don’t worry Rachel; I have the rest of my life to go on dates with you. Plus this Katarina seems like an interesting person.” Harvey replied, emphasizing the word ’rest of my life’ as if they were a promise.
Snuggling into Harvey’s side, Rachel relaxed. Harvey was so understanding and so kind that sometimes Rachel thought she didn’t deserve him.
“Yeah, you’re only saying that because she’s good looking,” Rachel teased.
“Yes that is a definite plus,” replied Harvey, earning him a playful punch to the arm. He responded to the punch with a heated and playful kiss. Cupping her cheek with his large and smooth left hand, the thumb of the right grazed a path across the creamy expanse of her neck.
“Harvey, there is a very young boy here. We can’t do this now.” Rachel broke away from the kiss breathless. Kissing Harvey always made her feel so serene and at peace, like she had come home from a long journey.
“Yeah and you better get dressed,” he said as he checked his wrist watch, “you only have an hour and a half left to prim yourself up.” Harvey teased as he ruffled his girlfriend’s hair slightly, love and adoration shining in his eyes.
“You’re impossible,” said Rachel, giving him one last quick kiss before she made her way to her room to get dressed.
“Wear the red dress!” Harvey called after her, chuckling to himself. He just kept falling deeper and deeper in love with that woman.
‘She’ll be the death of me’ he thought.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Ow! Mom that hurts,” cried J.C as his mother ran a brush through his hair.
“Maybe if you let me brush it more often it wouldn’t hurt as much,” replied Kat, amused when her son started pouting his pretty pink lips.
“Meanie,” he mumbled under his breath. “Are you done yet, Mom?” He said louder as he questioned his mother.
After a few more strokes of the brush Katarina responded, “All done, you big baby. Now you can go sit in the living room while mommy gets ready if you want.” said Katarina straightening out her son’s tie and smoothing away the wrinkles on his shirt.
“Thanks Mom.” Giving his mom a quick hug of thanks J.C walked out of the room and into the living room.
‘He looks more like Jack everyday.’ Katarina thought as she watched her son walk out of the room.
Shaking her head to stop that train of thought in its tracks, Katarina searched through her own boxes for something to wear. She had a dress in mind that was very simple, but very elegant at the same time, modest with just the right undertone of sexiness. Just because she was a mother didn’t mean she couldn’t blow the men of Gotham away.
She found the dress after a few minutes of searching and the sheer black tinted mini sleeveless jacket that went with it. She laid it out on the bed and walked to the vanity. Her bag of make up was placed on the table. She decided that the only thing she needed was a bit of eyeliner and some lip gloss. She wanted Rachel to shine tonight, an apology for butting in on her date night.
Changing out of her jeans and t-shirt, Katarina stepped into her heels, and then shimmied into the dress until the thin straps of the dress were on her shoulders. She put her hair in to a careless messy bun and let her long bangs hang to one side.
Katarina was blessed or cursed, depending on who you ask, with a considerable bust, narrow waist as well as wide hips and thick toned thighs. Part of her mother’s Native American genes, her height she received from her American father who was an astounding 6’5. She had looked almost average against him, her 5’10 diminutive next to him.
‘Jack wasn’t too short either at 6’3’
Katarina thought, and then regretted it. It had been almost eight years since Jack had left her. She didn’t know the reason why he just up and left one day, he didn’t take any clothes or money, nothing. He didn’t know he had a son either; he left before she could tell him. She figured it was a fair trade, losing the love of her life on the same day she discovered the existence of her precious son.
The fates were cruel and kind that day.
Zipping up the dress at the back was hard without help. The last time she had worn it, warm callused fingers had glided on the skin of her back, setting a fire at the base of her stomach. After closing the dress those same warm hands had turned her around to receive a mind shattering kiss. They did not go out that night and the same way he had zipped the dress he unzipped it minutes later.
‘Maybe the dress wasn’t a good idea’ coming back to Gotham was making Katarina relive memories that she had buried deep with in her heart. Memories she only visited on those too lonely nights where she cried silent tears for her love.
A knock at her door took Katarina from her thoughts. Rachel was at the door wearing a tight suede red dress. It looked marvelous on her. He brown hair was down, a part set back with a little diamond clip.
“For a cop you sure look like a model. You’re gorgeous,” Rachel complemented the woman before her. In regular clothes she had been attractive, but in this dress she was breath-taking.
“I’ll have to keep my eye on Harvey tonight, make sure his eyes don’t wander.” She laughed as she and Katarina made their way into the living room.
“Don’t worry he’s not my type.” Katarina replied as she laughed along with Rachel.
“What? Harvey is everyone’s type. Unless you like them crazy, you are a shrink.” Rachel teased Katarina.
“Oh yes, you found me out. I like them as loony as they come.” Katarina responded and then broke out in giggles.
“What’s so funny Mom?” J.C asked his mother as she and Rachel made their way into the living room giggling like school girls.
“Nothing sweetie, just us silly girls being weird.” Katarina replied.
“J.C, we men aren’t meant to understand women. If we did we’d be crazy.” Harvey told J.C
At the word crazy, Katarina and Rachel shared a glance before they started giggling with a vengeance.
“It’s going to be an interesting night.” Harvey told J.C as they made their way down stairs two giggling women behind them.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Good evening sir. Do you have a reservation?” The host, a prim and proper looking man, asked.
“Yes, it’s under Dent, Harvey Dent.” Harvey replied.
The host took a few moments to search through his book, but when he looked up he nodded and said. “How many in your party sir?”
“Four,” Harvey said as he motioned to the people behind him.
“Right this way please.”
The host led the small group to a large table that had four chairs. Harvey pulled out a chair for Rachel and J.C awkwardly pulled out a chair for Katarina. Both women smiled in thanks.
“Your waiter will be with you in just a few moments” With a slight bow the host left the table and made his way back to the entrance to serve the next customer.
“So Katarina, why exactly is Gotham so desperate to have you?” Harvey asked, truthfully he was curious, this woman was a puzzle.
“I’m an expert in criminal physiology and…”
Katarina was cut off when a voice said, “Rachel fancy that?”
Katarina turned to see who had so rudely interrupted her, behind her stood a handsome brown haired man who was accompanied by an attractive blond woman in a black evening dress.
“Bruce. Yeah fancy that.” Rachel replied, Katarina could have imagined it but for a split second panic was evident on Rachel face.
“And you must be Harvey Dent. I’m Bruce Wayne.” Putting out a hand for Harvey to shake, Bruce gave him a smirk which seemed to Katarina more then a little forced.
“And you my beauty, who might you be?” Bruce had turned his attention onto Katarina, who oh-so-hated to be interrupted so she curtly replied in a very heated manner.
“I’m the woman you just interrupted with your need for a grand entrance. Please to meet you,” she bit out.
People all around the restaurant, previously making small talk or laughing, froze. Everyone was silent as they waited opened mouthed for Bruce Wayne’s response to such a venomous comment.
