Watching Over You

Chapter Three: Watching Over You
Elizabeth looked to the entrance of the caves to see her father, Jack Sparrow, and Commodore Norrington running towards
her.
“Elizabeth, are you all right?” the governor asked, concerned. Elizabeth nodded.
“Is he alive?” Norrington asked as he knelt down to the two.
“He’s alive, but… but hur hurt,” Elizabeth couldn’t bring herself to tell them what happened.
“We should get him back to the ship,” Jack said loudly as he leaned over to pick up Will.
“I will take him,” the commodore said coldly. “You are still a prisoner of the British government.”
As Jack pulled the unconscious young man into his arms, he glared at Norrington. “And I will remain so until my date
with the gallows, I’m sure.” He ignored the commodore after that as he headed for the boat.
When the five arrived on the Dauntless Elizabeth was surprised to see the nearly destroyed Black Pearl in the harbor.
Jack paid it no mind, however, and demanded he be allowed to treat Will, who was still unconscious in his arms.
“Just let him,” Elizabeth finally told her exasperated fiancée. “He isn’t hurting anyone. You can post a guard by the
door if you want.”
“I will keep an eye on him myself,” he declared and showed Jack to a cabin where he could treat Will. Elizabeth and
Governor Swann followed, along with a few others from the crew who claimed to be able to help.
But once Jack had gotten Will into the bed, he would not let anyone else near the much younger man. He sent the sailors
to get some new clothes for Will and asked Elizabeth, Norrington, and the governor to give him space. Governor Swann left
the room and Norrington took a position by the door, his watchful, suspicious eyes never leave the pirate.
Elizabeth settled in a chair by the window across the room and watched the captain clean the wound on Will’s back with a
gentleness that surprised her. Jack’s sudden protectiveness over Will had also taken her by surprise, but it also confused
her.
Elizabeth looked away while Jack cleaned Will up and changed his clothes. Her eyes met with her fiancée, and they stared
at each other in a tense silence until Jack was done.
“Well that’s as much as I or anyone else can do for now,” Jack announced, catching Elizabeth’s attention again. She
approached the bed slowly and Jack pulled up the chair she had been sitting in for her.
“When do you think he will wake up?” she asked the pirate as he pulled up a chair for himself on the opposite side of the
bed.
“Soon, probably. He’ll be awake by the time we reach Port Royal.” Jack leaned back in his chair and pulled his hat down
over his face, hoping the young woman wouldn’t try to talk to him.
Elizabeth’s eyes traced over Will’s fair facial features, thinking how unfair it was that this had happened to him. She
remembered the last time she had watched over him, on the very same ship in the very same room. He was ten then and she
nine. She’d been very intrigued by the young orphan then, and as the years went by and they grew up together in Port Royal,
Elizabeth knew she was falling in love with him. And how she loved him now.
As her left hand reached out to softly stroke the side of Will’s face, she gave a start as she remembered Norrington’s
presence in the room. She turned her head to see him watching her, looking almost sad through the usually expressionless
mask he wore. Their eyes met once more and the young woman felt incredible guilt that she was in love with one man and
engaged to another. She wondered if her fiancée knew just how deep her feelings for Will ran.
A soft moan caught her atton aon and Elizabeth turned to Will to see him opening his eyes. She smiled at him as he looked
at her but he did not return the smile.
“Elizabeth,” he whispered painfully.
The young woman lovingly placed her palm on the top of his head. “It’s okay,” she assured him, echoing the first words
she had ever spoken to him. “I’m watching over you.”
Will’s eyes drifted shut again and Elizabeth looked back to the commodore. He said nothing but regarded her for a minute
before turning to the door and leaving.
Elizabeth looked back to Will. The new shirt he was wearing was much big big for him, making him look incredibly small.
She thought back to Commodore Norrington and knew she could never love him the way she loved Will. Taking the young man’s
hand in hers, she lay her head next to him and wished things were not so complicated.
***
When Jack woke up, he knew several hours had passed. A guard was sitting outside the door, and the pirate noted happily
that it was not Commodore Norrington.
Jack turned his attention to Will and frowned at the site in front of him. Elizabeth’s head was nuzzled into Will’s
neck—they looked very much like the happy couple they were not. Will did not yet know that Elizabeth was engaged to the
newly promoted commodore, and Jack knew he would be less than happy about it. Then again, maybe it would be better for Will
if Elizabeth was out of the picturefterfter what had happened to him, the last thing the young blacksmith needed was a woman
to make things more complicated, as they always did.
Jack noted Will’s limp hand in Elizabeth’s, both resting on his chest, and the pirate shook his head. Even from the
little time he had spent with them, Jack knew how deep the feelings between those two ran; in normal circumstances that would
be fine—he probably wouldn’t even care. But Elizabeth was not in a position to help Will, and unfortuly, ly, neither was
Jack.
Jack leaned back in his chair and wondered if there WAS anybody in Port Royal who could help Will. He mentally cursed
Barbossa.
Captain Sparrow had lived the last ten years for revenge and for getting his ship back. The idea of revenge was what
drove him after what Barbossa did it to him, it was what had kept him alive for a long time. Now he did not have his ship
back, but Barbossa was dead. Jack only wished he had gotten to Barbossa before Barbossa had gotten to Will.
Knowing that Barbossa was dead did not satisfy Jack the way he always thought it would. It did not change what Barbossa
had done to him, or to Will; and Jack didn’t even get the Black Pearl back. Jack had always thought that with Barbossa dead,
things would automatically set itself right. But they hadn’t.
Jack’s eyes wandered back to the sleeping pair in front of him. He knew exactly the thoughts and feelings Will would face
when he woke up, for he had dealt with them as well. The same face and the same voice would haunt them both and there was
nothing Jack could do for Will about it. For now he’d have to settle with taking care of Will until their arrival in Port
Royal.
