Nerk's Past

AN: Yes, I know. Oh the shame of me being a bitch and not writing in so long. I apologize. Please forgive and forget.

Chapter 30

“So tell, me? What was it like?”

The boy smiled an impish smiled and circled his all mighty master.

“You could never understand. I can not even put it into words. The feel of the power, the look on her face.” The boy shuddered and smiled again. “Pure bliss.”

Micheal smiled to the boy and nodded. “The feeling of power is like none other. Not even a woman can bring you close to feeling that way.”

The boy laughed and cocked his head to the side. “ Thought you enjoyed the company of women?

“Oh, I do.” The man smiled and laughed a little. “But, the feeling of depriving someone of something they long for or worked for, the power of being able to rip it away, that is the ultimate feeling.”

“Not love?” The boy asked, pausing in his steps.

“Love?” Micheal turned and looked at the boy he had raised since a baby. Had he learned nothing? “Love is nothing but a petty feeling. Keh, not even a feeling. A mut emotion to the world. Love does nothing.”

“Nothing but waste time and space.”

The boy finished his master’s sentence and they shared a smile. The animosity in the room began to rise as the both of them shared each others glance.

“And what if... what if I love someone? Is It worth nothing?” The boy asked quietly and softly.

Micheal looked at the boy with amazement. Who could he love and why was he asking such a foolish question?

“Love is nothing no matter who you love or if they love you back. Besides, who could honestly love you?”

The boy closed his eyes and stepped back from the harshness in his master’s voice. It bit hard at his mind and it stung like raging, angry hornet. The venom sunk into his body and it began to feel numb. What kind of master was he if he didn’t love the one who helped him... let alone the one who loved him.

“I don’t know.” The boy smiled a fake smile and nodded. “It was silly of me to even think of something so stupid and infantile.”

Micheal smiled. Maybe the boy wasn’t going out of his mind. Maybe he had followed his example. It seemed just yesterday that he was only a young babe.

-Flashback-

Smoke rose from the tiny huts around the village. Screams resounded in the distance and babies could be heard wailing for their lives. Women lay scattered around on the ground. Some crying, some twitching. Twitching, lifeless, eyes wide open in a terror that would forever raid the memories of those who survived.

Micheal stood in all his glory, smiling at the trashed, broken land at his feet. He had succeeded. He attacked the lands with precision, speed, and an unforgiving hand. Armies anywhere would pay to have him on their team. He walked down a path that was littered with bodies and rubble. Along the way, he kicked at the people who were still alive. He laughed at them as they winced in pain as he threw them into a broken wall or into another person who was close or already dead. He had his way, his harsh and feverous way, with more than one girl he found on the ground. Many just laid there, the shock thankfully still fresh in their minds and bodies. A couple though gave him what he wanted. They screamed for help, horse voices echoed against the broken walls as the dragon demon pounded into their defenseless bodies.

He threw a man out of the way and that’s when he saw her. Crouching in a corner and surveying her options. She looked around the corner and scuttled across the road. She held something that must have been of importance, for she hugged it tightly to her chest.

He smiled to himself and decided he needed another go. He walked slowly behind the girl, his large steps only taking a few moments to catch up to her scuttles.
“I do think you’ve been spotted.”

The girl turned and with an “eep!” she fell back against the wall she was hiding behind. She stood up again, her eyes staring the man directly square. She pushed back her shoulders, her chest puffing out. She widened her stance and took in a deep breath.

“I care not what you do to me.” She spoke, her voice coming out as strong as the desolate wind that blew through the ghost town. “But please, do not harm my child.”

The woman let her arms fall and a small child was hidden inside them. The boy was small, but something about him intrigued the Dragon Lord.

“And why must I leave him be?”

The woman looked down at the boy and her eyes shifted from hard stone, to molten love. They smoldered the boy with affection. Tears began to well in her eyes as she spoke. “I tried so hard. 13 years. 13 years of trying and them all dying.” She looked at Micheal and he drew back from her gaze. The molten was still present, but the rock hardness had returned. “He may be small, but I promise you he will not let you down.”

Micheal walked to the girl and looked grudgingly at the boy. There was something about him. Something was strange about him. He was not a normal human by any means, they were few and far between in the Underground. He was no fae, like his so acclaimed mother.

“What is he?”

She smiled down at the boy and looked deep into his eyes. The boy’s giggles instantly flooded the small space the three were enclosed in. She put him on the floor and stepped back. In front of his eyes, the boy changed, and was mesmerized as the boy became a baby dragon.

“Do you belong to my forces?” He asked wide eyed. Killing one of his own, though he did it often, would not happen unless he notified his people first.

“No. I belong here. As does he. He is a changeling. He saw your dragons and I guess like them. He’s been doing it ever since you scum came here.”

Micheal smiled as the woman held nothing back. *She is a strong one* He laughed to himself as the boy changed from a dog, to a cat, to a mouse, then an eagle, and then an owl. The baby giggled again and was back to his normal form.

“The cat is his favorite, that is until today, like I said before.” She bent down and picked him up again and faced the lord. “I care not what happens to my body, mind or soul. I have lived in this world and have tasted it splendors. My son has not. Please, my lord. You may not be as noble as some, but you are a lord none the less. Please,” she held the boy out to him, “take him and teach him of this world. How you do it is of no concern with me. I will probably never live to see tomorrow.” She looked him up and down and straightened herself more, her nose pushed higher in the air. “But, I want my son to know I loved him. To know I tried for him. Teach him anything you wish but please, let him know I loved him.”

Micheal looked at the girl and drew in a steady slow breath. What she was asking was out of the question. She was nothing to him and he cared not what she wanted. But that boy, if he crafted him to his likeness, he could be of many uses. He stepped to the girl and took the boy from her hands. The baby looked into his eyes and smiled. Micheal, forgetting the woman stood with him, smiled a genuine smile back.
“You are pleased, my lord?”

“I will take him.” Micheal wrapped the baby back up and tucked him under his arm. “Your life will be spared by me. But take heed. My other followers will not be so kind.”

“Thank you... thank you so much.” The girl cried as the tears began to fall once again. “Please, let me kiss him goodbye.”

She moved to the lord and unwrapped the baby. “I love you, my little Nerk. I will always love you.” She pressed her lips to his forehead and kissed him one last time. She looked up at Micheal and kissed his cheek softly. “Again, I thank you.”

The woman turned and fled the coverings of walls. Micheal looked down at the boy and cradled him closer. “Nerk.”

-End Flashback-

“Nerk.”

The boy stopped and looked at Micheal. He cocked his head to the side and walked to his master. Only on very important occasions did he use his name. *My name. My name is all I have*

“Yes?” The boy asked walking to Micheal.

Micheal looked into the boys eyes and saw the same molten love swirling in his eyes that his mother held in hers. His piercing eyes that made anyone tell the truth. Well, almost anyone.

“We need to prepare.” Micheal said breaking the silence that was thick between them.

“Right.”

Micheal turned and left the room leaving Nerk to himself.

He walked to the window and smiled.

“No preparation time, my master. They are already here.”
