A few hours and a shower later I found myself back on the passenger seat of the SUV, driving through New York. Dom was back at his not-talking-but-obviously-thinking-much habit, I stared out of the window, watching massive buildings pass by.
"Where the hell are we going?" I asked.
"Meeting some people." He said.
"That I gathered. Where?"
"You'll see."
I groaned and kept looking outside at nothing particular.
"Hurt you?" It was said quiet, calm, barely audible.
"Hah?" I said, not really knowing what he was referring to.
"Back in that motel. Did I hurt you?"
"No." I snapped. Dom, you almost shattered me with a single word, I thought.
"Hm." He grunted and kept driving.
Something black and white appeared in the corner of my eye, being overtaken. Police car. I tried to look at them while pretending not to look at them. They definitely looked up at me.
"Dom..." I mumbled between my fingers, still eyeing them.
"Hm." He huffed.
"You just overtook a police car."
"Hm."
I turned my face slowly to look at him.
"You insane?"
"Uh-uh." He was concentrating on the road while changing to the right lane, his face and whole body tensed to the point where I was afraid he could burst. I could see the black and white thing through his window now, they were overtaking us this time.
"Dom..." I said, terror creeping up my arms.
"I know." He said. Calm. Controlled. Too calm and controlled; but tensed. It didn't match. I frowned when I realized this.
They were going slower before us. Too slow.
He overtook them. I started to mildly panic, holding a firm grip to the handle on the door.
That was the moment when the lights on the police car went on behind us.
"Shit." I hissed.
"Let's see what Brian's friends are worth." He muttered, pulled to the right, slowed down and stopped the car; while doing this producing a white folded paper from the pocket of his trousers.
"Hah?!?"
"Shut up." He whispered. "Not a word. Hands to the dashboard."
"Morning. Your license?" A voice said from his window while I was just giving the front windscreen a blank stare.
I saw the white paper being handed over in the corner of my eye.
"That's not... a... license..." The officer said, obviously starting to read whatever this paper was saying, handing it back to him a minute later.
"Have a nice day, Mr. Toretto." The officer spoke and returned to his car.
I still stared at the screen.
"You know, you're gonna turn blue if you keep holding your breath much longer." Dom laughed.
"Pffff...." I breathed out audible. "WHAT THE HELL?"
"Seems our dear ex-cop is still good for something." He grinned. The tension was gone. In fact, I thought, I had never seen him as relaxed as he was right now; not even in bed.
"Dom!"
"I had doubts, Dana. Really had doubts. All the time. Now I know we're gonna make this, and all will be good." He chuckled to himself cryptically, started the engine and drove off again.
I didn't ask. I was tired of asking. Not tired of looking at him, though. It seemed as all of a sudden there was a different Dominic Toretto sitting next to me; smiling, enjoying to drive; even humming some odd tune while he did. During the whole drive ever since Mexico that had been different. I didn't know what that was about, but it was good. He would explain... eventually. At least I hoped so.
A few minutes later we arrived on an abandoned parking lot next to the freeway and stopped.
"What now?" I said.
"Dunno. Sex in the car?" He grinned.
"Dom!" I shrieked, laughing.
"On the hood?"
I tried to elbow him in reply.
"Well, then later perhaps. Now we wait for the cavalry." He unlocked his safety belt and got out, leaning to the hood.
I shrugged and did the same. The moment I closed my door some very fast car of an unidentifiable metallic greyish-green color shot past us on the parking lot. I went over to Dom.
"What the hell was that?"
"Eleanor."
"A guy called Eleanor?"
"You asked what the hell that was. That car's called Eleanor, the guy is called Memphis Raines."
"Ah, the rain in Memphis. Funny name. From the tone of your voice I gather I should be impressed?"
"Sure as hell you should." As the Mustang had turned and came our direction, Dom unlocked his crossed arms, got up from the hood and walked his direction. I hesitated for a moment, then shook my head and did the same.
"Raines," Dom said when the other guy was getting out of the car, greeting him with a stare. "Toretto," said the other guy who, from a distance, looked a tiny bit like Michael. They just stared at each other for a long time, both had crossed their arms before their chests, heads slightly tilted, expressions unreadable.
Finally the passenger door opened, too, and a blonde woman got out, leaning on the opened door. "You two having a staring contest?" She said, with a surprisingly coarse voice.
"Sway." Dom said without looking away from Raines.
Minutes passed, in which nothing happened but 'Sway' shuffling the sandy ground with her foot. When I was just about to become impatient, she stared from them to me, back again, sighed, slammed her door shut and came to me. "My name you know already. What's yours?"
"Dana."
"Fine." She walked to Dom's SUV, got in on the driver's side and opened the window. As Dom didn't move an inch I assumed this was alright with him.
"Wanna watch them stare each other to death or come with me and have fun?"
I looked at Dom, he didn't take his eyes from Raines but instead tilted his head to the other side for a moment.
"I'm coming," I said, not taking my eyes off the two. Sway started the engine and pushed the pedal to the medal - hard and fast the heavy SUV drove off. I still watched them through the window, just to see Dom hitting Raines' face with this fist. Raines did the same in return.
"Sway..." I said slowly.
"Yes, dear?"
"They're beating each other."
She laughed. "Don't worry, that's just their usual way to show their mutual respect."
"Sway..." My lowered voice showed the slightest hint of concern while I still watched them as we were already about to enter the highway. "They're on the ground now, still hitting."
She snorted. "As I've said, that's just the way they show how much they like each other."
"Can't they just, you know, hug each other?"
"No, they're both homophobic."
Now I laughed and leaned back in my seat, trying to enjoy the ride, which wasn't too easy as that woman really knew how to put the SUV to its limits. I noticed that I instantly liked her, not really knowing why.
