She gave no reaction when she felt the bed shift under his weight.
“I told you once,” the sound of his deep voice prompted her to open her eyes. “If I didn’t want you here, with me, you wouldn’t be.”
He leaned in, pressing his lips to hers, the kiss deep and insistent. She slipped an arm around his neck, pulling herself away from him.
Kylie didn’t speak as her eyes searched his face, her free hand sliding under her shirt, coming to rest over the handprint on his chest, barely touching his warm flesh.
When he didn’t pull away from her touch, her eyes raised and met his.
“Please,” her voice a soft hoarse whisper in the silent room, “show me.”
Hesitantly he placed his large hand on her chest, covering her own slightly glowing mark.
Taking a deep slow breath, she allowed her eyes to slip close. Even through her closed lids, she could see him.
“Trust me.” Her mind spoke to his, a gentle caress as she felt him relax, allowing her mind to touch his more.
Emotions flooded her senses as he let his guard down. First anger, at himself and others who had caused her harm. Gently she brushed that aside with feelings of understanding, letting the next come to her.
Physical desire, lust, cane as no big surprise to her, especially since she had those feelings for him herself.
She was surprised at the admiration he had for her, her spirit, and her will to fight and live. A brief flash of a memory hit her, her covered in a slaver’s blood as she rose from kneeling over a body, eyes flashing dangerously as she looked for more prey.
She got a brief flash of affection before there was a sharp knock on the door.
“Lord Riddick, the men wish to speak with you, and we have to decide what to do with the prisoners.”
Kylie pulled her hand from his chest slowly, eyes looking into his. “Go, I’ll be here when you return.”
He paused, and then rose, straightening his shirt before opening the cabin door, and blocking it with his body as he left.
Kylie sighed softly to herself, pulling a blanket over her. Another knock a moment later interrupted her thoughts.
“Kylie?” Kyra’s voice came through the metal of the door.
“Come in.”
The door slid open and closed around Kyra as she stepped in. “I wanted to let you know the kids made it back all right. We’re getting a building set up for shelter until there are more hands down here to help rebuild their homes.”
“Okay.”
“Something wrong?” Kyra walked over and sat on the edge of the bed.
“Sometimes it seems like life never gets any easier. I know nobody has a perfect life, but it seems like some of us end up with the brunt of it all.”
Kyra nodded, not speaking.
“I know what’s happened to you, and Riddick’s not exactly had things easy either. Is that what draws us all together? After my parents were killed, the place I was sent to…” She shuddered at the memory, “It was horrid. It was a barracks, with kids of all sorts of ages. I was a freak to them.”
She sighed, wrapping her blanket around her more as she sat up. “You’re not the only one who was done wrong as a child. If they couldn’t find me, they took it out on younger kids. Lesser of two evils for me I suppose, I did what I could to protect them.”
”You don’t have to tell me this, I understand what you went through.” Kyra crossed her legs under her as she turned to look at the older woman.
“I know, but I need to get it out, and I know I can trust you. Pilot school wasn’t any better, but at least I got something out of it. Is that it, the bad things pull us towards each other?”
Kylie shook her head slightly.
“I wanted to talk to you Kylie, before Riddick.”
”You want to be joined with Vaako and want me to help you tell him.” She smiled at Kyra’s surprised face. “I’m not the only one who’s obvious about her feelings.”
She gave a small laugh before nodding. “You know he’ll want to make sure that he’s serious about you. Don’t look at me like that, I know he is, but he cares about you and will want to have reassurance that you won’t be hurt. You are his little sister after all.”
”Little sister?”
“Not biologically, but that is what he sees you as, just like you think of him as your brother. I’ll make sure I talk to him. Just so you know, you both have my blessing, I couldn’t be happier for you.”
Kyra grinned and leaned in to hug her friend.
“Okay, okay, now go let your man know, I want to get some rest before I have to tell Mister Big and Bad.”
The girl was practically bouncing as she went out the cabin door, making Kylie smile herself. Inside she was happy for her friend, but wondering when she’d ever been that happy, or if she’d ever feel that happy.
