Chapter 33

>"Where the hell have you two been?" Dom's voice boomed through the garage when we got back there after the shopping. "And what in the name of Dodge are you wearing there?"

"Shopping. Hairdresser. Clothes." Sway shrugged while answering all questions at once; I couldn't help but smirk.

"You went clothes shopping for over six hours?"

"We're girls." I chuckled.

"You're not." Memphis said frowning, sitting on the hood of a car.

"Okay so we're practicing to be girls." Sway snapped. "Don't have much of a chance doing that when you guys are around, you know?"

"You could have done that with my sister." Dom growled.

"Sorry, sweetie, but your sister is boring." Sway shrugged.

"We bought a car, too." I said.

"It's not exactly what I would call a car." Sway snorted.

"Okay, so it has four wheels and it drives." I grumbled.

"Don't you already own a shopping cart?" Dom laughed. "What is it?"

"AMC Pacer." I said.

"It probably was a Pacer when it was sold to its first owner. Now it's a poor excuse of a Pacer." Sway chuckled.

"So you now own two shopping carts?" Dom grinned.

"Fuck you." I said.

"Oh, and Dana got herself a job." Sway mentioned casually, leaving me staring at her, daggers darting out of my eyes. You fucking nuts? I tried to tell her with my eyes, but she was definitely unimpressed, just exchanging a look with Memphis in return.

"Interesting. What kind of job?" Dom's voice was deep, frightening as he walked over to Sway.

"Just a bit of car cleaning for a friend of mine. Nothing big." Sway said before I could say anything.

"Good friend of yours?" Dom said.

"Very good friend of mine." Sway answered. The way they were both standing before and looking at each other much reminded me of the way Verone had looked at me earlier that day.

"Good looking friend of yours?"

"Damn good looking friend of mine." Sway nodded smiling. "Filthy rich, by the way, too."

How the hell does she manage to smile when he looks at her that way? Pink underwear, I thought...

"And when will I get to know that damn good looking filthy rich friend of yours?" Dom growled.

"You're not his type, believe me." Sway laughed.

...with pink high heels...

"But she is?" He almost shouted, not looking away from her while pointing at me.

"Definitely." Sway grinned.

...and a pink ribbon around the neck. Damn, girl, I hope you either know what you're doing or have a good life insurance...

"And you're handing her over to such a..." He grabbed her arm in a not very tenderly manner.

"Wow, wow, wow, wait a minute." I said, darting between the two. "Don't you think I would have to say one or two things in who I'm 'handed over' to? Really, Dom, this is ridiculous."

I was shoved aside as if I didn't exist; to my utter surprise not by him, but by her.

"You stop fucking thinking and behaving as if you own 'her', Dom, or you'll see 'her' running faster than your Supra could ever catch up." Sway said very calm.

"That's right." Memphis commented, still sitting on the hood of that car. "If she's half way sane besides having bough a Pacer..."

"Shut it!" Dom shouted.

Out of nothing, as it seemed, Sphinx had found his way between the two and just stared down at Dom, being taller than him.

I used that moment of Dom's speechlessness to grab his hand and pull him away. "Let's go for a ride, darling." I said, pulling him towards the garage door. "Have to show my new shopping cart to you."

"What the hell did you think you were doing?" I asked when we had driven some minutes.

He just stared out of the window in reply.

"Dom, talk to me."

No answer.

"DOM!" I shouted.

"Stop the car." He said to the side window.

"Hah?"

"Stop the fucking car, or I'll use the e-brake." He said, his hand hovering over it.

"No sense, that thing doesn't work." I chuckled.

"Oh."

"Yes, oh. Now that you've found the ability to speak again, tell me what you thought you were doing in there with Sway."

"As I've said, stop the car."

Shrugging I pulled to the right and stopped.

"What's up, Dom?" I said, slowly turning in my seat and facing him.

"Who is that guy?" He said, also looking at me.

"Ah - just so that you can go there and tell him I won't work there? No, Dom, I won't tell you." No way I'm going to tell you. No way I'm going to lie. Don't ask me again, I thought. Don't make me lie to you because there's no way I'm going to tell the truth.

"What the hell do you need a job for? Once we've finished this thing my accounts won't be frozen any more, and we'll have..." He started, one hand firmly on the dashboard. Was he steadying himself by doing this?

"NO, Dom. I want to make my own money." I said, which wasn't a lie. Good.

"I don't want you to work." He said, his eyes on mine.

"And why not?" Oh, come on. You know you can't play that manly shit on me, right?

"Because... because... because I'm old-fashioned. Women don't have to work in my family."

What, you're really trying that on me? I frowned at him. This was no more about Verone, this was about something else. "Your sister does run a cafe, right?"

"Because she doesn't have a man." It was spoken out matter-of-factly, as if he had just stated to prefer coffee over tea. I felt a spark of anger inside of me.

"Ohhhh! Don't. Just - don't. Don't you dare. Sway was right, you don't own me." I said, shaking my head.

"How much do you know about Sway?" He said and took my hand.

"Well, she's with Memphis, so I trust her." I replied, frowning at him again.

"Well, I don't."

"Pray tell why?"

Really funny Dom. Really funny. That's why you go and beat up Memphis while you let me go with her. That's why you and Memphis have to do 'manly things' while dismissing me with her. All of this because you don't trust her. Yeah, sure.

"Because that woman was always too interested in money for my taste."

"She's joking about it, dammit!" I said.

For a short moment I thought about the way Sway had talked to Verone, how she had practically chanted his name and how quickly she had gotten me a job there.

No! It couldn't be. So... couldn't. It wasn't possible. Sway would not change the sides. No matter what her criminal activities might have been, she would never betray me. I just knew it.

"I don't think so." He said a bit too calm for my taste. He didn't really mean that, I thought. He's doing this to keep me from doing a job - one he luckily doesn't know about, but still.

"Yeah, well, I do." I replied. I believed in Sway. I also believed him, however, and now I was in a real personal dilemma. Sleep over it, I thought. Take more time to fucking think about it. Talk to Sway, try to get more information.

"Please." He said, his fingers stroking over my hand. "Can't you just - like - stay in your trailer for a week or so? I'd be much happier if you weren't running around, especially not with her..."

"Dom?" I interrupted him.

"Yes?" Was that hope I was seeing in his eyes? For what? For me not taking the job? Not really, right?

"Forget it." I said and drove on.
