.....REVIEW

A month and a half passed with no worry or fret. Bagoas sulked back to the shadows to try to figure out what Olympias has done to Hephaistion. He wanted him out of the picture so that he could be with Alexander. Olympias on the other hand had total control over Hephaistion, making him pleasant and loving towards Olympias and Alexander. Of course she would seep in something special into Hephaistion’s food, making him pass out into a deep sleep and she would have her way with him. Hephaistion grew larger by the day, Olympias often wondered if Hephaistion carried more than two children in his belly.

Olympias stood at her balcony surveying her surroundings. Everything was normal, but something seemed so off place. After her usual sacrifice to Dionysus, she sought the night sky to soothe her. She didn’t fear for Alexander, he was the son of Zeus! He had the blessing of the gods, even Dionysus watches over him. Yet something wasn’t right.

A sudden roar echoed throughout the palace one of pain and suffering. Olympias recognized that voice, it was Hephaistion.

Olympias rushed towards the cries of pain, she also noted that Teodor was crying too. Her paced quickened and guards were at her heels to investigate the sudden wail as well.

She came to the door and found that it was locked, she pounded against it with all her might.

“Hephaistion! Can you hear me! Open the door,” she cried.

A cry of pain answered her pleas.

The guards pushed Olympias aside and began pounding on the door in union. Eventually the door broke down and Olympias rushed into the room.

Hephaistion was on the floor clutching his belly in pain.

“Oh gods, “ Olympias whispered when she saw him.

She quickly kneeled next to Hephaistion, “Don’t worry Hephaistion, I am here. I’m going to make the pain go away.”

Hephaistion met her eyes with his tear and pain driven eyes, “Teodor, he is crying,” he managed to choke out.

Olympias kissed his hand, “Don’t worry about Teodor, I’ll take care of him.”

Hephaistion smiled in response, a weak smile.

Olympias turned to a guard that was standing there idly, “Don’t just stand there fool, go get his doctor, and the rest of you, help me get him on his bed.”

They all nodded their heads dutifully and carried out their orders.

Once placed on the bed Olympias held tightly onto Hephaistion’s hand, “Tell me where does it hurt?”

Hephaistion clenched his eyes as another rush of pain overwhelmed him, “Inside, they want to come out,” he sobbed.

Olympias’ eyes widened, “No, they can’t come out, it’s too early!”

Hephaistion arched his back, “Yes, they want to!”

Glaulcos entered the room with swiftness as if he were possessed by Hermes.

“What is it my queen,” he asked urgently.

“It seems the babies want to see the light of day already. It is too soon! What shall we do?”

Hephaistion groaned in pain.

“Well, if we don’t get his babies out then they will surely die,” he replied camly.

“Oh gods, how do you propose we get them out,” she asked fearfully.

“I must cut them out,” he said as he started unpacking things from his sack.

“Cut? Are you mad? What if Hephaistion bleeds to death,” she yelled.

“May the fates be on our side then,” he said as he held a knife up to his eyes.

Olympias closed her eyes briefly and prayed a silent prayer to Dionysus.

“Get me several bowls of water, and several cloths. And go get my assistants, “ he ordered to the remaining guards.

Olympias placed soft kisses to Hephaistion’s hands and soothed him with her words of comfort as everything was getting prepared for the appending surgery.

“Alright, everything is set,” the doctor said before slicing Hephaistion’s belly.

Olympias closed her eyes and prayed to every god for Hephaistion’s and her grandchildren’s protection as the blade pierced Hephaistion’s stomach.
