Chapter 4:

Will leaned against the railing, watching the star-filled sky. The surrounding ocean was black, for there was no moon that night. The young man sighed heavily and turned to look at the almost desolated decks of the Pearl. Most of the crew was below, having supper or taking a rest. Will left the spot and slowly walked around the main deck, thinking about the past week.

'He's still acting like I'm just one of the crew members...and it's been like this for a week now!...I doubt he even remembers anymore...that only three months ago I saved him from the gallows! Stood between him and the blade of the Royal Navy...' the boy thought in his mind, somewhere in his heart finally starting to regeret the decision he'd made seven days ago.

'I shouldn't have stayed here...being around him is only getting harder...' Will groaned, walking towards the Captain's cabin. His brows drew together, as he was torn apart by different feelings. Will knew he could just return to Port Royal, return to the familiar life of a blacksmith. He knew there probably was even a way for him to get to London if he wanted. But the problem was that he didn't.

Will realized that in his heart he still wanted to stay on the Pearl, stay close to Jack, even if it made him suffer. The boy was unable to repress his feelings, and the more time he spent around Jack, the stronger his passion only seemed to burn. Whenever the Captain was in his field of vision, Will found himself unable to concentrate on his work or anything else. His surroundings became nothing but a blur and all he saw was Jack. The way he would motion with his hands when he talked, the the expressions on his face altered as he gave his orders to the crew, his dark hair, the little beads and trinkets in them, all the little details. Will would just stand there, as if spell-bound, all his attention drawn to the Captain. This had once caused Will to almost fall down from the crow's nest, rising many questions among the crew, for Will was usually very agile and careful.

Jack had a powerful hold of Will, even if the older man himself probably didn't know this. Will blinked his eyes and snapped out of his thoughts as the door to the Captain's cabin suddenly flew open.

"Ah! Will! Jus' the man I wanted." Jack exclaimed happily, taking a draft from the bottle of rum in his hand. Wiatchatched as the older man staggered to where he was standing, realizing Jack was drunk. Not that it made much difference in the way he behaved, the thought making Will smile inwardly. Jack threw an arm around the boy's shoulder, his un-focusing eyes meeting Will's in the dim lighting of a near by lantern.

"Tonight..." the older man began, then paused and brought the bottle up to his lips. "...I will grant you the privilege to dine with the Capn'." He then forced Will to follow him and led them into his cabin.

Will stood in the doorway and watched as Jack seated himself behind the table, filled with miscellaneous food. The man threw his hat away, the red bandana remaining, then leaned back in the chair and grabbed an apple from a near by bowl.

As he noticed Will was still lingering in the doorway, he raised his face, his brows arched up in question.

"Well, lad? You still loitering in the bloody doorway? Now sit that lil' ass of yours in one of these chairs 'ere! ...And eat! You'd think this is better than dinin' with the crew!"

Jack motioned for Will to sit down. The boy closed the door and finally joined Jack, sitting hif onf on the opposite side of the table. He watched silently as Jack began to peel the apple, humming some pirate song, not paying attention to wheter Will was eating or not.

"...We pillage, we plunder, we riffle and loot..." Jack raised his face and grinned at Will, the candle light casting long shadows on his face. "...Drink up me 'earties yo ho!"

The pirate looked like he was having a very good time, but Will on the other hand, was serious as a grave. His brown eyes were staring at Jack, but the older man didn't seem to be bothered by this.

"That's me favourite song, you know.." Jack spoke, took a bite from the apple he'd pee peeled and washed it down with rum. He eyed the bottle in his hand, his eyes then travelling to Will's direction, a smirk playing on his lips.

"I doubt you'll be wanting any o' this?" he offered Will the bottle, but the younger man leaned back in his chair and lowered his face, still not speaking a word. The boy's muteness was finally starting to bother Jack, and the smile on his face disappeared.

"...Something the matter, Will? Why so serious? ...Not starting to regret your decision to stay, I hope...To tell you the truth, lad... You're at least a hundred times better a first mate than ol' Gibbs was." Jack spoke, leaning against the table with his elbows.

"It wasn' just once I found the man taking a nap in the powder magazine when on duty...But Will, I can see there's something wrong..."

"I'm just fine, Jack." Will finally spoke, his eyes fixed on one of the rings in Jack's fingers, shimmering in the candle light. The older man narrowed his eyes at the tone in Will's voice, but gave the boy a pleased grin.

"Well good. We've only sailed around the Caribbean for a week...haven' even had the chance to plunder yet! ...Would be a shame to know...that young William was regretting his decision to stay on the Pearl...to stay with Captain Jack Sparrow..." Jack spoke, his tone of voice indicating a hidden message in his sentence. His dark eyes widened slightly as Will finally met his gaze. The expression on the boy's face was a mixture of agony and frustration.

"Jack you know why I'm here!" Will shouted, slamming his palm against the wooden table. "...You know why I stayed....and you refuse to even talk about it! Act like nothing's changed!" The boy raged, now standing up. Jack watched Will, the look on his face finally serious.

"...But then again...what good would talking do...it won't change the way I feel...or the fact that this is one- sided...It's just like Gibbs said! Jack Sparrow only loves three things: The Black Pearl, his beloved bottle of rum and last but not least, himself." Will turned his back and walked to stand in front of the big windows of the cabin, his heart racing in his chest. "...You just don't care...about anyone but yourself."

The room was silent for a long time. Will didn't know what the expression Jack wore on his face was like, and he didn't have the courage to turn around and see it either. After what seemed like an eternity, Will finally heard Jack's approaching footsteps, and a moment later, the older man lay his hand on Will's shoulder.

"...Not true..." Jack spoke, and the seriousness in his voice surprised Will, causing him to blink his eyes. Hesitantly the boy turned around and met the pirate's dark eyes.

"What isn't true?" Will asked, his brows drawn together in confusion. Jack lowered his eyes, but let hisd red rest on Will's shoulder.

"Well first of all...your feelings; they aren't one-sided, Will."

Before Will could say a word, Jack raised his finger, telling the boy he wasn't finished yet. "...And there be also a tiny mistake in what Mr. Gibbs told you...I did once care about someone...not that it matters anymore."

With this said, Jack pulled his hand back and slowly walked towards his bed. Will immediately followed him and then sat down on the soft bed with Jack.

"But it so turns out that the person I cared for, ended up betraying me...I don' blame him, though. He didn' have much of a choise..."

Will narrowed his eyes as he watched Jack, realizing who the older man was referring to.

"My father?" he whispered.

"Aye. Bootstrap." Came Jack's answer. "Doubt he ever even knew my feelings for him went past mere friendship..." he continued, a hint of sadness in his voice.

"You never told him?" Will asked, disbelief audible in his voice.

"That's right. Never told him." Jack sighed and lay down on the bed, Will's eyes following him. "It's not like I was in love with the man...just...cared about him more than I normally did, that's all." Jack added, not wanting Will to think he had been some lovesick puppy.

"That day in the smithy, Will...when we met for the first time...I saw you and for a second there I thought I'd run into ol' Bootstrap." Jack laughed quitely, lying on his back.

"Yes. You told me I resemble my father." Will commented, waiting for Jack to continue.

"But when you sprung me from that jail and I planned to use you to get me ship back, I also realized all those old feelings I had many years ago, were rising to the surface again..."

Will turned around to face Jack, meeting his eyes.

"But only this time....them feelings...I didn' just care about you and worry about you as a friend, Will...let's just say that...my feelings for you were stronger than they ever were with you father..." Jack looked straight into Will's soulful brown eyes. "You, Will, are young and have a lil' tendency to do rash and stupid things..." Jack noticed the frown on Will's face. "...But you're the most honest and kind-hearted man I've known...and feast for the eyes!" Jack continued, a genuine smile on his lips, letting Will know he really meant what he said.

The younger man felt his heart skip a beat, hearing Jack's words. A rush of happiness almost made his eyes blur as he watched the man in disbelief. A frown, however, made its way to Will's face as he suddenly remembered what the past week had been like.

"Then why did you-" Will's flow of questions was stopped before it even started. Jack motioned for him to lie down on the bed, and as the boy lay next to him, he brought his hand up to gently touch Will's loose, wavy hair.

"...Elizabeth..." Jack spoke the girl's name and watched as Will blinked his brown eyes in confusion. "...The day you rescued me from the gallows...was also the day I realized your heart truly belonged to the girl. Will, you were head over heels in love with the lass...so I knew ol' Jack could never have your heart."

"But I had already fallen for you that day, Jack!" Will exclaimed, gripping Jack's shoulder. "...I just...didn't realize it before you had already sailed away and...and I was about to marry Elizabeth. ....I guess I was blinded by the love I felt for her for so many years...but that was before I met you, Jack...Even if I disliked you when we first met...that feeling changed into friendship...and then into something much more powerful..."

The older man narrowed his eyes, watching Will closely. He turned his face and lay his gaze up on the ceiling.

"Jack...I don't understand it...your feelings for me brought you back to Port Royal, you followed me to Tortuga and took me with you to the Black Pearl...you knew about my feelings...so then why, all this time, did you treat me like I was just another face among the crew?" Will finally asked the question that had been paining him for the past week. The older man kept staring into the ceiling, letting out a sigh.

"When I came to Port Royal and learned that the young missy had left to London, I wondered what be ree reason for young William to stay behind. 'Course I suspected it had something to do with you, longing to be on the open sea again; you being the son of Bootstrap Bill." Jack glanced at Will, then looked away again.

"But when I heard you talk in your sleep...heard you call me name and utter your heart's true feelings out loud.... I could hardly believe my ears!"

A soft smile tugged Will's lips upwards as he watched the expression on Jack's face.

"But I also remembered how head over heels in love you had been with the lass, only a few months ago...not to mention your bleak outlook on pirates...I just to to make sure this is what you truly want. Live as a pirate..."

Jack turned to look at the younger man, his face serious. "...I feared you would regret your decision to leave the life of a blacksmith...regret leaving your bonnie lass for ol' Jack..."

Slowly Will leaned closer, his heart racing in his chest, as his face was now mere inches away from Jack's. He watched as the pirate licked his lips and raised one brow in question.

"...I don't regret it, Jack...not anything..." Will breathed and with this, Jack finally twined an arm around the younger man's waist and pressed their lips together, granting them the long- wanted kiss.
