chapter 4

“I suppose if you’re going to help me, and understand this mission at all, I’m going to have to start at the very beginning. When I was very young, my mother died after an outbreak of the pox left our little town marred beyond recognition. This left me with only my father for all the needs a child requires. Unfortunately for me, my father was unacquainted with any of these things. He was one of the town’s disciplinarians, a policeman who hated nothing more than an unhung pirate. Exceor mor me, perhaps. Every day after his long shift of terrorizing the misunderstood sods of the nd, nd, he would let me out of my room and beat the life out of my body. A few times he even raped me, but I won’t go into that here. I hated him with every ounce of myself, and I once got up the courage to fight back and hit him, as hard as I could, and fat lot of good it did me. That, of course, only worsened my situation. My predicament steadily grew. He would make me watch him eat, the most delicious looking food I’d ever seen, and then spit it out at my feet, while allowing nothing for my own stomach. I would be locked up in my room all day, beaten all night. This torment lasted up until I was about eight years old, when I was presented with a very opportune moment. In a fit of particular rage, my father had dislodged a board in the wall of my room, allowing a very small person such as myself passage through. I readied the board so I could get back in easily, but it didn’t look as if anything was askew from the outside, and crept out into the world I hadn’t known since the death of my mother three years previous. To this day, I’ve rarely seen the sun shine more brightly than it did that day. As I walked around our little town, I began to recognize things from so very long ago. There was the miller’s, the baker’s, the thatcher’s, the tailor’s, and- the port. All my life I’ve loved ships, and I made for the port as quickly as my legs could carry me there. When I arrived, panting, I saw a boy setting up a small boat to sail with a man I assumed was his father, and it brought tears to my eyes. I was only eight, after all, and I cried out inside for the love and approval of my own father, hate him though I did. The boy turned to me and I realized that I vaguely recognized him. He was about thirteen, with cocoa colored eyes and a soft smile all framed by messy brown curls. He waved at me, and his father beckoned me over.

“What’s your name, boy?” he asked me. He was tall and handsome, with dark hair and the eyes that were so strongly reflected in his son.

“Sparrow, sir,” I hoped to God, if there was a God, that the man wouldn’t hit me or tell my father. Instead, he smiled.

“I knew your mother well. Jack, isn’t it?” I nodded and his own son came running up to me.

“I know you! I’m Bill Turner, remember me?” I nodded my head happily.

“Would you like to come with us, Jack? We saw a small island the last night we thought might make a good adventure. How does that sound?” Turner held out his hand to help me into the boat. I grabbed it, and took one last glance back at the island where somewhere my father was torturing some other poor soul, at the very moment. Then I took a great step into the boat and we were off.

“We can play pirates! It looks like a wonderful place for pirates!” Bill cried cheerfully, and I smiled."
