Chapter 3
Anna came to again a couple of minutes later. She had a pounding headache, and her arm hurt where Gibbs had grabbed her as she fell. She registered the fact that she was lying on the floor, and that her head hurt partly because it was lying in Jack’s lap and his coat buttons were digging in somewhat.
“What happened?”
“I’d like to know that myself, luv. All I saw was you delivering a drink, and then you turn white and faint. Who was he?” Anna turned white again. “What’s wrong, luv?”
“He said he was my cousin Alfred. He called me Maggie, Jack. Nobody’s called me Maggie since…since Jamaica.”
“Could you have a cousin Alfred? That you know of, I mean.”
“They said I did, but I never met him. He was…older.”
“And on the off chance he really is your cousin, how much money did he want?”
“He didn’t say. He just said it was nice to see me. But the way he said it…he’ll be back, and he’ll want money. I know the type."
“So do I, luv. I don’t like them either. Shall we teach him not to do it any more?”
“You’re not going to kill him in my tavern, are you?” Anna’s headache was starting to go away, but the idea of Jack killing anybody in public, in her taproom, was enough to bring it back. She sat up, relieved when her head didn’t actually fall off and roll around the courtyard.
“Not if you don’t want me to. I make no promises about killing him elsewhere, though. You wouldn’t miss him, would you?”
“I haven’t yet. Any suggestions as to what I should do when he comes back?”
“Be somewhere else?” Anna’s glare would have cowed most people, but it bounced off Jack. “Failing that, bargain with him. Get him to come down as you can. And don’t let him find out where you live. At least, don’t tell him. Gibbs knows what he looks like, so I’ll have him keep his eye out.” Jack got up and gave Anna a hand, and they went back in. It was getting down to the end of the night, and Anna started urging people out the door. Jack found Gibbs and got a description of Alfred, and sent Gibbs back to the Pearl for for the night. In the meantime, he started thinking about ways to make Alfred’s life a burden, or extremely uncomfortable at the very least.
