The Devil’s Bride

Chapter 4 A Bit O History

The bullets whizzed into the water around them, but Davey and Jonas were two of Jack’s strongest men. They quickly rowed Jack and the other three out of range of the muskets, and soon enough they reached the Black Pearl. Jack scampered up the side of his ship first, followed by Elizabeth and Will. Jonas and Davey had barely made it over the side of the ship carrying either a dead or very unconscious body in a burlap sack, when Jack turned the Pearl to make a hasty retreat

“Thought there was just one prisoner you were going after.” Gibbs said to Jack. Then he got a better look at the two extra people, and his jaw dropped. “Will Turner? Elizabeth Swan? What ye doing ‘ear? Don’t tell me the both of you was imprisoned as well!”

“We were…sort of,” replied Will.

“Well no matter, good to ‘ave ye back.” Gibbs turned to Jack who was doing his best to make sure the Dauntless wouldn’t be finding them. “Captain, are ye going to tell me who this mysterious friend of Pierre’s we just rescued is?”

“Curious cat are we? Help Will carry her to me cabin. I’ll be there to explain things better as soon as I’m sure Norrington isn’t on me arse.”

“Did ye just say, carry her?”

“Aye Gibbs. That I did.” Jack said with a wide smile.

Gibbs open his mouth to say something, but then tht bht better of it and closed his mouth with a loud clomp. He turned and walked away, but Jack could hear him muttering something under his breath about “twice the bad luck” and “don’t trust nothing that can bleed for 5 days and not die.”

Jack giggled, “that’s a good one.”

After Jack was more than positive that the British Navy wouldn’t be finding them, he went to his cabin. Gibbs and Will were sitting at the long table catching up over tankards of rum, while the burlap lump which still appeared unconscious rested on the other end of the table. Elizabeth was sitting in the armchair near the back of the cabin. She seemed to be very interested in one of Jack’s books, but noticing him enter, she stashed it behind a pillow. Jack walked around his table, patting the burlap lumps behind as he passed. He helped himself to Will’s tankard and plopped down at his usual seat at the head of the table.

“I suppose ye all want ter know who exactly we gots in the sack?”

“Aye, that and why is she unconscious? Usually when ye bust someone outta jail they go willingly.” said Gibbs.

“That usually be the case. But this prisoner was none to happy with who was doing the rescuing, savvy? Something had to be done to calm her down quick or else we would have had more than just that handful of soldiers to deal wif.”

“So ye had to knock her out?”

Jack pulled a look of disgust. “Captain Jack Sparrow never hits a lady….that’s why I ‘ad Elizabeth do it.”

“Lady!” Cried Elizabeth. “I’d hardly call her a lady, she tried to bite me! Not to mention the language she uses. She had quite a few choice words to say to you, and what exactly did she mean by “the bloody other Jack”?

“Just about ter get to that luv. Some of ye may have heard of a pirate that goes by the name Calico Jack. Not nearly as famous as I, but that’s not important.”

“I’ve heard of him,” said Will.

“Me too.” said Elizabeth.

“You know I’ve ‘eard of him,” replied Gibbs.

Jack gave a small scowl, annoyed with Calico’s obvious fame. “Fine. Glad to hear we all know just who I’m fucking talking bout. Any way this hear just ‘appens to be the LATE Calico Jack’s lass.”

“WHAT!” roared Gibbs. He jumped out of his seat knocking his chair backwards, drew his cutlass and pointed it at the burlap lump. “That be Anne Bonny! And ye jus left us in hear wif ‘er, not knowing what we might ‘ave to deal wif!?”

“Calm down Gibbs, she’s out like a light.”

“I’ve heard tell stories bout her! She be deadly with a sword! A spiteful, heartless pirate wench that would eat yer family jewels fer supper and shit them out in the morning. Ye know what she said to Calico on his way to the gallows? She said, “If ye had fought like a man you needn’t die like a dog.” I tell ye Jack, she be the devil’s bride!”

“Always had a thing fer lasses with a little hellfire and brimstone in em,” chuckled Jack.

“Is she really that dangerous.” Asked Will, eyeing the lump a bit nervously.

“Why, ye worried that she will make good on yer nickname…eunuch?” Jack smirked.

“Well should I be?”

Jack only shrugged and gave Will a wink.

“If she’s so much trouble, why did you rescue her?” asked Elizabeth

“Couldn’t live wif meself if I did nothing ter help a damsel in distress…and her good ‘ol friend Pierre in New Providence has promised me more than enough gold to make it worth our while.”

“How did she end up in Port Royal?” Will asked.

“Getting to that mate. She sailed on Calico’s ship. One night when the crew was two sheets to the wind wif rum, a navy vessel came across ‘em. The men hardly put up a struggle. Only Bonny and her best mate Mary Reade did any real fighting, and they were both wif child at the time. Well that didn’t sit to well with Bonny, especially after they were defeated and sent to prison to wait fer there time at the gallows. Calico and the crew went first, Mary died of the fever, and Bonny pleaded her belly. Our mutual friend Pierre managed to get her outta jail. Apparently the Governor of New Providence was a close and personal friend of Pierre’s and Pierre threatened to let people know just HOW close and personal. The Governor agreed to let her go on the condition that she never return to her pirate ways. Well, not being the type of lass that liked to be told what to do, Bonny had her child, found a good home fer it, joined a new pirate ship called the Victoria sai sailed outta town. They soon found a Spanish galleon ripe fer the picking and soon after burying the loot, got captured by bloody Norrington. Anne once again pleaded her belly but after a few months it became obvious that an innocent life wasn’t at stake. She was to hang tomorrow, until Pierre requested my services. Other than Bonny, he was the only one that knew where the now dead crew of the Victoria buried the treasure.”

“Was?” asked Gibbs

“Aye. Was. In exchange fer helping Bonny escape, he gave me the map to the treasure that she sent to him from jail.”

“Why would he do that? Why not just keep the treasure to himself.” Elizabeth asked

“Ahh, already thinking like a pirate, are we? Good girl. Well there are three reasons. One being that Pierre be quite the landlubber. He knew he’d have ter hire a captain and crew to sail to the treasure. Secondly Anne knew she’d have to give Pierre a reason to send someone for her. So she left out a few crucial clues as to where exactly the treasure be buried. Thirdly Pierre figured that once Anne got her arse outta jail she’d be having some adverse thoughts as to forking over the swag. Figured Anne wouldn’t just share the last steps on the map to just any ‘ol pirate, nor could she be forced to. She don’t respond to well to orders. Stubborn as a mule that girl is. But he figured that since she and I have a bit o history together, I could convince her to be a good little lass and share.”

“History, aye? Just what kinda history are we talking here, Jack? Seems as though the strumpet don’t want nothing to do with ye.” Asked Gibbs

“Well mate, few years back Calico and I were in competition fer Anne’s affections. She was having a good time stringing the two of us along, but I got tired of playing games so I sailed outta port wif out her. Didn’t take too kindly to having her decision made fer her. Swore up and down on a stack of bibles to Pierre that she’d never waste her time on me again. She sailed off with Calico, and ye all know what a mess came of that. So I’m thinking after sailing wif us awhile, she’ll see the error of her ways and not be so unwilling as to handing over the swag.”

“Where is she going to stay? She certainly cannot stay with the crew.” Said Gibbs.

“Aye.” Said Jack stroking his beard. “It wouldn’t be safe fer her.”

Gibbs jaw once again dropped and he started sputtering unintelligibly.

“What’s that?” Asked Jack.

Will shook his head. Jack could be incredibly thick some times. “I think what Gibbs is trying to say is he’s more worried about the safety of the crew, and after seeing her reaction to seeing you, I’m afraid I’d have to agree.”

“Hmmm, guess yer right. I suppose she’ll ‘ave to be sleeping in the brig till she warms up to me.”

“Speaking of sleeping quarters, Jack. Where will I be retiring to?”Asked Elizabeth.

“You’re more than welcome to bunk wif me, luv.”

“Jaaack.” Said Will warningly, although he couldn’t help but smile.

“Don’t be jealous whelp, ye more than welcome to join the fun.”

Gibbs shifted in his seat beginning to get a little uncomfortable. “Suppose I should be heading off to me bunk, want me to take Bonny to the brig before I go?”

“Aye.” Said Jack. “Elizabeth, Will? If ye don’t want to stay here with me, there’s Annamaria’s ‘ol cabin.”

“Oh, um, sure that sounds perfect.” Elizabeth bit her lip with anticipation and smiled at Will, who in turn blushed and pulled at the collar of his shirt.

“Yes I’m sure Elizabeth will be very comfortable there,” Will’s voice seemed to go up a few octaves, “and I’m sure the crew’s quarters will be just fine for me.”

Elizabeth’s face fell and Jack shook his head. When would the whelp learn to recognize an opportune moment?

“Alright then…Gibbs, take Bonny to the brig, then get Will set up with a bunk in the crews quarters. I’ll show Elizabeth to her cabin.”

“Thank you Jack, It’s really wonderful to see you again.” Will gave a small smile and then helped Gibbs pick up the burlap lump named Anne Bonny and carried her out of the cabin.

Elizabeth turned and looked at Jack nervously. Being alone with him always made her edgy. Not that she was worried about him trying to take advantage of her. Nay, she was worried that she would let him.

“Alone again at last, are we luv? Unfortunately I’m just too tired to be doing any wooing so I guess I’d best be taking ye to your cabin.”

Jack took Elizabeth by the elbow and showed her to her cabin, which just happened to be right next to his.

“Little dusty in here.” Said Jack as he lit the oil lamp that hung in the middle of the room.

“Thank you Jack, for taking on Will and I. You are a kind, and wonderful man.”

Jack felt his face flush and he hoped his tan too dark and the room too dim for her to catch it. He was used to being called a scoundrel, a thief…but kind and wonderful. It would do his reputation no good if that were to get out. “Bah! I’m nothing of the sort. Wouldn’t have taken ye in if you two weren’t such great additions to me crew.”

Elizabeth smiled. He couldn’t fool her.

There was a long silence as they both stared at there feet.

“Um, Jack? Why do you suppose Will went to sleep with the crew instead of in here with me?”

“I honestly have no idea, luv. A beauty such as yerself offering pleasurable company fer the long cold night is not a request most men would deny”

Elizabeth knew she should at the very least feign a look of embarrassment or scold him for making such a comment, but she couldn’t tear herself away from his pitch black eyes.

Jack broke the moment with a small shrug and a gentle smile. “He’ll come around Elizabeth, he just needs to get the last bits of polite society purged outta him, and there no better place to achieve that than on a pirate ship.”

She gave a small nod. “I best be going to sleep”

“Aye. Goodnight Elizabeth”

“Goodnight Jack”

Jack gave a small bow as he backed out of the cabin’s doorway and closed the door softly. Elizabeth plaited her hair into a braid so it wouldn’t tangle while she slept and had almost pulled off Will’s butter colored linen shirt when came a soft knock. She slipped the shirt back on and opened the door a crack.

“Thought ye may be needing a bed time story.” Jack handed her the book she had been reading earlier. “Take a look-see at page 37, that be one of me favorites.” And with that he turned on heal and went back into his cabin.

Elizabeth’s cheeks burned with embarrassment but nonetheless, she opened the book with the funny title Kama Sutra to page 37. She flipped through the book looking at the steamy prints until her eyes drooped. She fell asleep wondering what other Kama Sutra positions Jack liked and if she could ever convince Will to try a few of them with her.
