It had been five years
It had been five years, or was it six, that Kylie had been living there. The settlement had grown some, gaining three or four new families, adding a farm on the outskirts though little had changed about the people there. They had all seen the comets passing, heading for who knew where, but their small planet had been left alone.
The supply ship that came shortly after that spoke of some sort of war on Helion, that there were stories of warriors who wiped out planets. Kylie didn’t put too much stock in it, but didn’t exactly disbelieve it either.
Her nightmares had faded in the time since she had gotten there, being away from the city and the sirens had helped. She still had scars on her sides from the natural disaster shortly after they had arrived, but the injuries had healed well.
One of the things they had kept from the beginning was the communal bath house, though everyone had their own bathing facilities in their homes, it served as a place for the men to clean up after working in the fields or wherever, and as a gathering place for the women when they wanted each other’s company.
It was late at night when Kylie decided to go make use of it, wanting out of her apartment for a while. She preferred the late night quiet, the peace while everyone else was sleeping, their homes dark, the occasional tuft of smoke coming from their chimneys.
She was proud of what they’d built here, and had even replaced her ship about a year after it had been taken. She didn’t regret what she had done, and smiled as she settled into the steaming water. She had let her hair grow out, though she usually kept it held back in a bun or in a braid down her back, for now it floated in the water around her. The main room of the bath house was filled with a “tub” more the size of a small swimming pool then an actual bath tub, and when it was filled, the room was thick with steam.
She helped to keep the equipment running day to day, occasionally going on supply runs when they ran out of things early, or had special orders. Those times were the hardest on her, those were the nights, after being around so many people and in the cities, that the nightmares came back.
“Thought I’d find you here.”
The voice stirred her from her thoughts and she opened her eyes. That voice, she looked through the steam around her, and she smiled slightly. “This is a surprise.”
She made her way to the side of the “pool” letting the stone shield her body from his eyes. “It’s been a while hasn’t it.”
“Yes” He crouched slightly, half a smirk on his face. “It has.”
“Seems like life hasn’t been treating you too badly.” She chuckled as she got a shrug and a grunt in response. “What brings you back here?”
“I need a pilot”
