Chapter 4
Mooring

The wind was beginning to pick up again, but lucky for Jack and the crew of the Black Pearl, they were quite near Tortuga, their goal. He could think of nothing but the girl who lay in a fitful trance on his bed. She was on his bed, yet he was doing nothing to her. This was quite unusual, but it didn't bother Jack that much. He was much more concerned about the girl's health. How is it possible for her to recover if she has no treatment for her wounds?

Suddenly, Jack heard a crunching sound and Gibbs brought him back.

"Captn'!" Gibbs cried out in alarm, yer not payin' attention again! We're about to crash into the dock! Jack, who had been casually leaning on the wheel and was immediatly brought back to reality and stood up straight as though nothing had happened. He liked to preserve his dignity. Though his crew had seen his folly, they wouldn't dare mention it. They knew how much he hated being accused of not taking care of his beloved Pearl. Jack privately cursed his carelessness as he steered his ship into the docks. Normally, he could not do this, but in Tortuga, everyone was welcome. When the Pearl was finally moored, Jack rounded up his crew.

"Right lads!" he said in a cheery voice, "You know the drill. You're free to do anything you like just as long as you don't cause trouble for anyone other than yourself. Do we have an accord?"

"AYE!" the men boomed out in a loud chorus.

Jack, who was used to cannon fire, didn't even flinch.

"It's settled then."

The men cheered and began to lower the boarding blank and leave the ship. Finally, when the ship appeared empty, Jack swaggered into his cabin again. He wanted to check on the girl and make sure that she wasn't worse off. What if she wasn't telling the truth about healing herself? Jack quickened his pace, his anxiety mounting slowly. Finally, when he opened the door, Jack had the shock of his life. Not only was the ship not empty as he had assumed, for Annamaria stood there, but the girl was awake. Some of her injuries still showed, her arm was still badly broken, but the bruise that was becoming a black eye had vanished along with the many other bruises Jack had seen before when he had rescued her. Jack stood there, dumbstruck, his jaw dropped. Finally, Annamaria slapped him. Jack grabbed his cheek, rubbing it because it stung. Annamaria's slaps were always the worst.

"Did I des--"

"Yes you did!" Annamaria cried passionately, "For asking that bloody question in the first place. Secondly, you deserve it because you need to keep a closer eye on her! It was only through my careful nurturing that she recovered so quickly. You really should have a woman looking after another woman. For we understand each other. Annamaria looked at Otluta fondly, as though they had been getting along quite well. Otluta, who was looking at Annamaria the whole time, smiled at her.

"I thank you, Annamaria," she said, her voice ringing. "You are too kind. And you..."

Her voice trailed off and she turned her head to Jack. The effect was automatic. Vivid blue eyes stared into Jack's chocolate ones and ther was an immediate connection. Jack felt violated somehow...like all his secrets had been revealed and the was out in the open. Those eyes seemed to probe him like her mind had probed his a few nights before. Jack wanted to break eye contact, but she was so beautiful that it was trying to stop eating something that was utterly delicious. He suddenly realized that she was speaking to him.

"--and Annamaria told me what you did. You are a really good person, whether you want to admit it or not. Though I do not know you well, I know you well enough, for you have proven yourself a good person twice as far as I am aware of. I wish to thank you again for saving my life."

Jack gesticulated in an almost shy pleading way, "It was n-nothing at all." he said unevenly, and smiled. What was the matter with him? He was usually cool, calm, and collected around women. They all flocked to him because of his unbeatable charm and handsome looks. Once again, he got the feeling that there was something more to this woman. The woman felt for her necklace with the right arm and felt it there. She seemed to breathe a sigh of relief. Jack did not look twice at this, however. Many people were afraid of losing their valuables.

There was a silence in which only the candle on Jack's bedside table sputtered. Jack moved toward the bed and sat on it, shivering slightly as he accidentally touched one of Otluta's legs.

"So," Jack said in a would-be calm voice, "What is your name. I forgot to ask it, but you scared me so bad."

The witch smiled and said, "It is Otluta."

Jack and Annamaria looked quite confused at the odd name. Though Jack knew why it was odd, but said nothing for fear of frightening
Annamaria. Nevertheless, he tried to pronounce the name and failed miserably. But, to his relief, she did not want to be called by her real name.

"But please call me Elizabeth."

"Sorry!" Jack said, standing up and walking toward Anna and turning around, "We already know an Elizabeth. That would get horribly confusing." Annamaria rolled her eyes at Jack and then looked curiously at Otluta.

"Why do you need a fake name anyway?" Annamaria asked suspiciously, "We're pirates. If there's ever a bunch of people that you don't have to hide your identity from, it's us!"

"No," Otluta said serently. "I must. Not Elizabeth, eh? Well, this might be more challenging that I thought. "Well...then....call me....Emmeline." Otluta said finally.

"Right," Jack said, without hesitation. "Erm, Emmeline, may I have a private word please?" he asked with a fleeting glance toward Annamaria. Otluta looked carefully at her caregiver and asked,

"You don't mind, do you dear? I'm sure it's not that important..."

"No," Annamaria said shortly, but looking as though she did mind very much, "I'll just be outside then."

Silently, Annamaria walked to the door of Jack's cabin and opened it, stepped outside, and slammed it shut so hard that the candle fell off the table. Jack immediately ran over to the place where a fire would have begun and picked up the candle hastily, glad that no fire had started. He then looked seriously at Otluta.

Author's Note: I know this is a kinda sorta cliff-hanger. Anyway, I hope you all are enjoying the story. And just so you know, if you see a chapter that seems unusually short, or seems incomplete, it's because I have to save my work constantly or lose it because my computer is a psychopath. Anyway, Happy New Year everyone.
