Unexplainable fear

Chapter 4: Unexplainable fear

“What on earth are you doing here?” Abby asked in a hushed voice. Jack didn’t seem to think there was anything wrong with being at the mansion and walked to the nearest door and took a look inside.

“Well, some navy pricks happened to see some of me crew walkin’ and I had to get outa there, and this house was the first one I came across.” He explained as he opened a second door, which happened to be Abby’s bedroom. A smirk instantly came to his face when he seen the frightened look on Abby’s face, which told him it was her room. He let out a slight chuckle and waltzed in. Abby quickly followed and pulled on his arm to get him to leave.

“You cannot go in there!” She said in an urgent voice. Jack simply plucked her hands away from him and began snooping about. Abby’s frustration grew quickly, she stomped her foot on the ground as if it would solve the problem, but of course it didn’t. “Mr. Sparrow get out of my bedroom right this instant.” She demanded in a surprisingly strong voice. Jack looked up from the jewelry box he was digging through and looked at her right in the eyes.

“And why would I want to be doin’ that dearie?” He asked in a tone that would normally be used for a four year old. She let out a deep sigh and threw her arms in the air.

“I don’t suppose it would matter if you wanted to or not. It’s quite obvious I can’t make you leave.” She yelled. Her eyes instantly went wide and she clapped a hand over her mouth. “Bloody hell, if you get found her I’m going to be in a lot of trouble.” She muttered behind her palm. Jack turned his body to her and gave her an amused look.

“You cursed.” He said as his smirk got bigger. “I wouldn’t expect a woman like you to curse.”

“Well we have only known each other for about ten minutes now haven’t we.” She said with irritation totally evident.

“Think we should calm down, eh luv.” Jack mumbled as he turned back to the jewelry. His previous smirk no longer gracing his features. Abby walked briskly over to her dresser and stood in front of him crossing her arms over her chest.

“These are my things, you are lucky I didn’t report you yesterday.” She growled back, and then continued as if talking to herself. “Why am I not turning you in now?” Jack’s smirk returned as he put his hands on her shoulders.

“No one can resist me charms darling.” Jack said as his eyes twinkled mischievously. He took a slight step forward so he was even closer to Abby, their faces only a couple inches apart. Abby looked up at Jack, her voice was lost in her throat, but was immediately found when she felt Jack move a hand to her lower back and pull her to him. She felt the fear as it raced throughout her body. No man has ever dared stood so close to her. She took a sharp step back and raised a hand, giving Jack one of the hardest slaps she had ever done. Jack’s head jerked to the side when she made contact with his face. She couldn’t help the gasp that escaped her mouth, she never loses her temper and was brought up being told that violence was never the answer to any problem. She watched as Jack slowly turned his head back around to face her.

“Don’t touch me.” She said as Jack lifted his hand to rub his reddening cheek.

“At least my touch was gentle.” Jack mumbled under his breath. Abby quickly walked around Jack and to the door. Jack turned around to watch her, his cheek now had a very visible hand mark on it.

“Jack I think it would be wise if you left now.” Abby said. She opened the door and stood aside, waiting for Jack to leave her room.

“Come on Abby dearest, I have no where else ta go.” Jack said, trying his best to give her a puppy dog look.

“There is no possible way you could stay here and not be found.” Abby replied as she looked down to the floor. “Misty always wakes me up in the morning, she’s not as polite towards pirates either.” Jack let out a humph and a thoughtful look came to his face.

“Please Jack just go. You may not care about what happens but I would like to keep my job and the only place I have ever called home.” Abby said in a stern voice.

“This isn’t your home then?” Jack asked with furrowed brows.

“No, I am a maid here.” She replied. “And if I get seen with you I will lose everything. Please go.” She pleaded. Jack nodded and started for the door. He could feel Abby’s eyes on him, watching his every move, as if expecting him to attack her. Almost the second he stepped out of the room the servant’s doorknob clicked. Abby shot out of her room and grabbed Jacks arm pulling him back in.

“Hide, quickly.” She yelled as she pushed Jack farther into the room. Once he was out of her way she ran out of her room and closed the door behind her. She looked to the servants door and seen Misty setting down a couple sacks in the corner. She jumped when Abby slammed her door shut.

“Oh my goodness! You scared me Abby.” She said, putting her hand over her chest.

“I apologize, I didn’t mean to frighten you.” Abby said as she fidgeted with her hands. Misty noticed and immediately knew something was going on.

“What did you do child?” She said in a scolding tone. She stood up straight and put her hands on her hips.

“Why do you always expect something to be wrong?” Abby replied, and mocked Misty’s stance.

“You get in enough trouble to suit four people, and I am normally right about assuming something is wrong.” Misty said as she walked for her bedroom.

“Misty, have you heard about the pirates at port?” Abby asked trying to learn her feelings towards them. Misty stopped walking and turned to face her.

“Why do you ask?”

“The Commodore left dinner early to look for them. I was worried about you all night long.” Abby said, praying that Misty wouldn’t be able to see through her lie. Abby was far to busy with Isabelle to think of anything else, much less pirates.

“Oh, well yes I did hear about them. There were soldiers posted at every corner. I only pray noth—“ Misty said as she was cut of by a crashing noise from Abby’s room.

“Oh bloody hell.” Abby said as she turned and looked at her door.

“Abigail Waters you do not speak that way!” Misty scolded. Abby didn’t hear a word however, she was thinking only of a way to keep Misty out of her room. “Go in child, don’t just stand there.” Misty urged.

“I’m sure it was nothing. I think I will retire for the night. I will come and get you if something is wrong.” Abby said, praying to herself that it would be a good enough to keep her out. Misty gave her a look as if saying ‘I know you’re up to something’, but decided against going into an argument.

“Make sure you do. Goodnight Abby.” Misty said as she went into her own room, closing the door quietly behind her. Abby quickly turned around and walked into her room, looking everywhere for Jack.

“Jack what on earth are you doing? Come out.” She whispered. A loud thump followed by a sound of someone stumbling over their own feet came from behind her curtain.

“Bloody ‘ell woman, why do you have so many dresses layin’ here?” Jack said in an irritated tone. Abby let out a light laugh and walked around the curtain and seen Jack’s feet tangled in her work dresses.

“I’m going to have to go shopping for ribbons tomorrow I suppose.” Abby mumbled to herself.

“What was that luv?” Jack asked, thinking she was talking about him.

“Nothing that concerns you, only my dresses you are ruining.” She said then walked over and untangled the dresses.

“Who am I kidding; I don’t have enough money to buy ribbons.” Abby said under her breath.

“If you need some bloody ribbons that bad Abby, I could lend you some money.” Jack said. Abby let out a frustrated sigh and leaned back on her heels to look at Jack.

“Don’t be silly, I don’t need them.” She said with a small smile coming to her lips.

“There is something I have never seen.” Jack said with his own smirk planted firmly on his face. Abby let out a small giggle and got to her feet. Jack stood up after her. When she looked up at him she noticed how close they were and couldn’t contain the gasp in her. Her smile quickly faded as the familiar fear came back. Jack seen her body stiffen and stepped back, not wanting to scare her any more than what he had already.

“Am I that bad ta be around?” Jack asked with a raised eyebrow.

“I’m sorry, I just can’t…” Abby closed her mouth before she got too far. If she couldn’t explain the fear to herself, how would she be able to tell someone else?

“Can’t what luv?” Jack asked. Abby shook her head and looked to the ground. Deep in her heart she knew what the fear was from, even without have Misty told her about her own past she somehow knew on her own. As if she was old enough to remember that terrible night.

“Nothing Jack, I get the bed. You have to sleep on the floor.” Abby said. She looked at Jack one last time then walked over to a chest at the end of her bed. Jack followed closely behind and sat down on a nearby chair. Abby opened the chest and pulled out one of the extra quilts and threw it to Jack. She laughed when it landed on his head. “Sorry.” She muttered. She laid down on her bed, then threw one of her pillows over to Jack. He was more prepared this time and caught it before it hit him.

“You better be gone before Misty comes in here Jack or I will be in a lot of bloody trouble.” Misty said and she turned to her side so she could see Jack.

“Good night to you to Abby.” Jack muttered as he stood from the chair, only to sprawl out on the floor.

“Goodnight Jack.” Abby said as she closed her eyes and tried to get to sleep. She was only half awake when she felt the bed move as a body crawled over it and got under the quilts. She was too tired to kick him back out. Then she noticed that the fear was not there. It wasn’t even there when she felt an arm wrap around her waist and legs entangle with her own.
