Chapter 24 - Problems

Oria returned to the helm seeing the Jolly Roger rise and patted Anna-Maria on the shoulder, she turned and stared disbelievingly.

“It was a good plan up till now.” Oria jogged down the ship and grasped Wills’ arm.

“Keep the cannon balls and cannons intact. We’re going to need them.” He nodded as she ran down the port side stopping any tossing of the relevant objects, he placed a foot over one of the cannons as Marty and another pirate threatened to push it overboard.

“We’re going to need that.” Will strode up to Gibbs.

“Gibbs! We need to make a stand, we must fight! Load the guns.” Oria appeared next to them, Anna-Maria gazed at him.

“With what?”

“Anything, everything, anything we have left.” Gibbs nodded and turned around.

“Load the guns! Take shot and langrage. Nails and crushed glass. With a will!” He ran downside to spread the message and watched them stuff cutlery in, he tried to take a swig out of his canteen but Marty dragged it from his grasp and stuffed it into a cannon. Feeling got at Gibbs went back up top side, “The Pearl is going to luff up on our port quarter. She’ll rake us without ever presenting a target.” Elizabeth glanced around.

“Lower the anchor on the right side. On the starboard side!” Anna-Maria and Gibbs looked at her as if she was crazy but Oria nodded with a pleased expression. Perhaps the girl wasn’t a complete dunce.

“Clubhaul. We’ll clubhaul.” Will smiled at Elizabeth proudly.

“It certainly has the element of surprise.” Will stated grinning at Elizabeth. Oria nodded at Anna-Maria and she gazed at the trio uncertainly.

“You’re daft lady, all three of you are.” Gibbs was smiling though.

“Daft like Jack. Lower the starboard anchor! Do it you dogs or it’s you we’ll load into the cannons.” The hands scrambled immediately into action, and the anchor splashed into the water dragging for a few metres before finding purchase. Anna-Maria clutched the wheel desperately as it tugged at her grip.

“Let go.” Elizabeth’s call was urgent and she responded immediately, the ship lunged suddenly around. Will grasped hold of Elizabeth as she almost fell over the side. Barbossa glared as the HMS ship reared rebelliously against the restraining leash of the anchor.

The ships reared alongside each other each pirate screaming blue murder at the other ships crew. Gibbs knelt next to Elizabeth, as a shot barely missed his head.

“We could do with a few more ideas lass.” Oria shot off one of her pistols at a pirate on the Pearl and knelt back down to refill it gazing at Elizabeth.

“Your turn.” Elizabeth shouted at her, Oria grinned as she compacted the powder into the gun.

“Short and sweet ideas, great. That’s just great Miss Swann.” Elizabeth glared at her; Anna-Maria ducked next to them and wrapped an arm about Elizabeth’s shoulders aiming her pistol at her head. Elizabeth froze at the sudden chill.

“We’ll give them her.” Will shook his head.

“She’s not what they’re after.” Anna-Maria stood up and fired at a pirate on the other ship to vent her frustration. Elizabeth felt across her bodice for the medallion, her eyes widened as she realised it wasn’t there. Fear clasped at her soul.

“The medallion.” Will stared dumbly and cursed leaping up to go and search for it below. A hand shoved her head down sharply, Elizabeth struggled against it and glanced up to meet Oria, she nodded her head towards a hole in the wood by Elizabeth’s head. She clicked her pistol shut with a smirk.

“Oh.” Elizabeth whispered as comprehension dawned, Oria grinned as she sheathed her pistol.

“I keep my oaths, even if they don’t mean much to you Miss Swann. Now stay here and keep yourself out of trouble.”

“Raise yer colours ya bloomin’ cockroaches! Hands, grapples, at the ready. Prepare to board!” Oria stood up and jogged down to the opposite end of the ship quickly to check on Will, she ducked instinctively as cannons shot off. Elizabeth gave a shout as the heavy creak of wood echoed about the ships, Oria glanced up and realised the mast was going to land on her; she rolled to the side and missed it by millimetres. Falling backwards sharply and winded herself as she fell on a section of broken wood. Barbossa calmly stepped to the side as the mast fell across the Pearls’ deck. “Blast all to carcasses, men! Forward clear to the powder magazine. And the rest of you, bring me that medallion!” The grapples latched onto the wood and locked the ships together; Oria stood up slightly shaken and drew her swords. The first pirate that landed near her was immediately disarmed and pushed overboard. She glanced up and met Barbossas’ gaze with a grin.

“Hello Captain, miss me?” She smirked arrogantly and tipped her hat sarcastically as he scowled at her as she dodged between the invading pirates and began to make a real nuisance of herself. Jack scrambled up from the brig and stood out of sight until an opportunity presented itself. Stumbling up onto the railing he caught the rope of a pirate who had failed to make it over to the Interceptor. The pirate flew through the air at the sudden stop and splashed into the sea on the other side of the ship, Jack grinned.

“Thanks very much.” Taking a tighter grip he jumped and almost swung over to the other ship, at the last minute the rope changed direction and swung him back to the Pearl, he grimaced and pushed back over jumping at the last moment to land ungracefully in front of Gibbs.

“Jack!” He knelt down and tugged the canteen out of his jacket with a reproachful look.
