For a few moments, Sinan did not reply. He had hoped to have some time to formulate a plan with his sister rather than make a decision for her. The treatment of his sister, as property was low business, something he wanted to forestall for as long as possible.

“If we sail The Straits as we are, it will be the end,” Sinan replied, “of all of us.” Like Jack, Sinan had not come to his position by making friends with the French and Spanish naval fleets. By their accounting, only his life was compensation for their losses.

“Yes, it will be the end.” Jack said, voice and gaze steady, resolute to finish what they had begun to discuss when he first met Sinan, “and the beginning.” Sinan listened for several skeptical moments to Jack’s plan to sail the, Il Falco Nero (The Black Hawk) under the guise of Captain Giovanni Caccamo. Nijad acting as Jack’s ‘wife’ would aid their ruse, a position Sinan did not relish placing her in. With each word Jack uttered, Sinan’s own thoughts clamored in argument until he could take no more.

“You must be daft if you think no one will see through this.” Sinan interrupted, standing by shoving his palms down against the table, shaking its contents.

“It is a rumor.” Jack responded coolly, stroking one of the braids in his beard,” if you don’t like my plan, feel to leave my ship at any time.”

For a moment, Sinan wondered if he had made a serious error. Bowing his head, and tensing his arms he fought clenched, angry, breaths. Months ago when his sister fled from the palace, she begged him to forget she ever existed. Her flight alone was an act of treason and infidelity. The Sultan, Ahmed III, and Grand Vizier, Ibrahim, took great pains to illustrate the manner of her execution, should she be captured and returned by any of the other Corsairs. Sinan had pledged his own life for hers, to assure them she would return ready to take her place as a wife.

“She will be returned, to The Sultan, unscathed,” Sinan leaned forward locking his gaze with Jack’s and lowered his next words to a careful whisper, “in all manner of speaking. Or you will pay the ultimate price upon the blade of my scimitar.”

“I will not forget the terms of our accord.” Jack replied, his cocksure air faltering just slightly in response to the threat.

“Good.” Sinan stepped back, crossing his arms, still uneasy about their exchange. He forced himself to take a slow breath in through his nose before continuing. “Do not think that because I am willing to bargain with what I hold dear, that I am a fool.”

With no hint of his usual sway, Jack rose to his feet, lips working as if to utter a retort. Instead, all that came out of his mouth was the word, “Pirate.”

Figuring that to mean they had an understanding, Sinan took his leave from the great cabin to find Nijad. The next conversation with her was going to be unpleasant. ‘Better now where she cannot run away so easily’, he muttered under his breath. Nijad might be of the fairer sex, but she would not be gentle with him when he disclosed her role.

Anamaria was working on fixing an eye splice when a shadow was cast overhead. Not recognizing the footwear of the silhouette she looked up, it was the Corsair’s sister. She could not recall the girl’s name, for a moment they simply stared at each other.

“You are blocking my light,” She patted the deck next to her, “sit.” Ana was not looking to make conversation but did not mind an onlooker. The girl sat, crossing her legs, and pointed at the line while saying something unintelligible. Anamaria shook her head and shrugged. Before she could say she didn’t understand, the girl took the line from her and began looping strands around to complete the splice.

“At least you are useful,” Anamaria said, “what is your name?” To this, the girl looked at her and smiled but there was no response. Pointing at herself, she said slowly,” Anamaria,” and then pointed at the girl.

“Benim adim Nijad” The girl said quietly.

“That is quite a name.” Anamaria replied a few bewildered moments later. Clearly, Nijad did not share her brother’s knowledge of English.

“Her name is Nijad,” Sinan interjected with an irritated tone, he’d been standing there for a few moments and neither woman had acknowledged him. “I need to speak to her now.”

Anamaria bristled for a moment at his implication that she should leave, “You will just have to do that elsewhere, I have work to finish.” she indicated to the pile of line next to her with an elbow.

“Nijad, hadi,” He gestured for his sister to follow. They walked a slight distance away and he leaned in, grasping her elbow.

Watching from under the brim of her hat, Anamaria was curious about their conversation. The tone was quiet but on occasion body movements became staccato when it was clear that Nijad was unhappy with what her brother was telling her. As the topic was further discussed, it became clear it was not a pleasant one. Sinan grasped Nijad’s shoulders during the moment her jaw, and fists clenched until she nodded her head and dropped her gaze in submission. He gently kissed her forehead before turning to walk away.

Nijad came back to her place beside Anamaria but did not pick up the rope. Instead, her body shook as the anger she had in check moments before seeped out in ragged sobs. Awkwardly, Anamaria put and arm around the girl. This gesture unleashed a full torrent that transcended any language barrier. It was the fury of a woman placed in a corner by those she trusted. Anamaria held her tightly, whispering in soothing tones until the shaking came to stop.

“Sağ olun,” Nijad said quietly before rising to her feet. Anamaria nodded in response, despite having no idea what the girl meant. At this point, it didn’t seem to matter; they needed to look out for each other on this escapade of Jack’s.
