Chapter 4
Authors note:
I'm not too sure if I liked this chapter, I don't really think it flows. Well...I tried so sorry if it sucks. Ever heard that saying "It has to get worse before it gets better?" Same basic principle. Enjoy!
The Tortuga dock was filled with usual hustle and bustle. Although it was only late afternoon the streets and bars mirrored that of a night. The Pearl had run low on supplies so Jack had decided to pull into Tortuga for new stock. The moment the ship had made port, numerous crew members excitedly ran ashore whilst vaguely registering Jacks drowned out voice reminding them to be back by nightfall tomorrow. Jack scanned the deck and caught sight of Elizabeth. They had not spoken since the situation with the journal. Unsuprisingly, Elizabeth seemed very determined to avoid Jack at all costs and, up to now, had been very successful. She turned swiftly in the opposite direction when she saw him coming, she took the night watch so she could sleep during the day but began rotating her schedule when Jack had figured out what she was doing. He locked eyes with Lizzie for a moment and thought perhaps now would be a great time to make up with her. However, he took one cautious step towards her and she turned and ran off the ship.
"LIZZIE! Wait love we need to talk!" He had attempted to run after her but she had ran into the crowd and Jack could no longer see her. Jack sighed, this is going to be a long day...
Lizzie weaved her way through the crowd, barely registering the faces of the curious characters around her. She didn't know where she was heading, just that she had to get as far away from Jack as possible. Her betraying mind was telling her she had no real reason to be upset with him, he's done nothing wrong!
NO! She thought angrily, he read my journal, my personal thoughts! But as soon as she thought it her guilty conscience pondered her, making her wonder what could have been so bad that she didnt want him to read it? She pushed that thought to the back of her mind and tried to concerntrate on where she was going. She didn't know Tortuga very well and it was growing dark, she decided she needed to find a tavern. She was just deciding which way to go when a hand lightly touched her shoulder. She spun round immediately, panic rising in her throat, but she relaxed when she met with a shy, smiling face. His name was Dave, one of the new crew members Jack had pick up at last port. Thankfully, he was one of the members who didn't have a problem with her being aboard the Pearl. She smiled back at him, figuring he must be around her age give or take a few years.
"Hello! Just saw you walking around alone and wondered if you fancied joining me for a drink?" He blushed slightly and stared at his feet. Lizzie looked at his pink face and started giggling. He's kind of cute
"Okay" She took hold of his arm and followed his lead. They reached a tavern that wasn't too full and grabbed a table. Dave ordered them a rum each but Lizzie nursed her mug with care. I've had enough rum to last me a lifetime she thought wearily. Her and Dave chatted eagerly, and Lizzie found herself laughing more than she'd done in days. That is...until the tavern door opened. She didn't notice Jack and several of the crew members walk in as she and Dave were busy discussing family holidays they'd been on.
"Large rum me darling" Elizabeth froze and lifted her eyes to the bar. Jack! No Lizzie, enjoy your night with Dave, don't think about him! So she brought her eyes back down to Dave and blocked out any thoughts of Jack.
Jack swaggered from the bar, swaying his hips and spilling his drink. He gave off the air of a drunk, carefree pirate but inside he was hurting. His heart felt very heavy and seemed to be beating extra loud. Why was it Lizzie couldn't bear to be around him but could chat so willingly with whatshisname, Dave? He lifted the rum bottle to his lips but barely swallowed any. He didn't feel like rum tonight so he resigned to listening to the crews exaggerated versions of different tales of piracy.
Elizabeth felt warm, very warm. She and Dave must have been talking for several hours and in that time Lizzie had forgotten her vow to keep away from the rum. She looked down to see their table laden with empty rum bottles. Dave insisted on one more drunk and she accepted, he left to visit the bar but not before placing a chaste kiss on her hand. She smiled at him but felt guilty. She risked a glance at Jack who appeared to be looking at her. No, not at her, though her. He saw the kiss she thought to herself. Without warning, Jack rose to his feet and left the tavern to go back to the Pearl. Elizabeth's smile faltered, she felt terrible. When Dave came back, she smiled at him and told him she had a stomach bug.
"I'm heading back to the Pearl. No, you stay here I'll be fine." She insised when he held out his arm to walk her back. He gave her a worried look but nodded when she turned to leave. She stepped outside. The cold wind felt amazinf on her overheated face and she took a deep breath. Time to sort things out...
