Chapter 4: Family Affairs
Somehow they had managed to find the house despite the late hour that it was and the winding streets that seemed never-ending. Trey read the address three times before deciding that this was the right house.
Sighing deeply, he turned his gaze to Gibb. He wanted to ask her if she was all right, but, at the time, it seemed very stupid to ask. Instead, he said “I’m hoping that this man will have answers for the both of us.” Gibb remained silent. “Gibb?”
“Us? As in both of us?”
Trey nodded.
The house was a two-story, made entirely of brick. It had a narrow driveway that spiraled much like a snake. The front yard consisted of a large sycamore and flower garden that looked well tended to. The roof consisted mostly of shingles (mostly because over time many had fallen off and never been repaired).
Trey and Gibb slipped out of the car and walked up to the front door, Trey’s hand holding Gibb’s tightly. Trey rang the doorbell; they could faintly hear chimes echoing in the house. “I’m coming” they heard a male voice call, most likely from up-stairs. Trey heard Gibb inhale deeply and he gently squeezed her hand.
The door opened. A man in his late forties stood in the frame; he was dressed in flannel pajamas, curly hair that was untidy from sleep that he had been woken from. “Yes?”
“Hello. My name is Trey, this is Gibb.” The man nodded, a puzzled look on his face. “Um… Are you Dr. Neil Gordon?”
The man nodded. “I am. Why?”
“You worked at Westin Hills back in 87.”
“I did. I was fired after someone was injured.”
“Joseph Crusel.”
“Right… Who are you?”
“My name is Trey White, brother to Taryn White. This is Gibb Sanders, cousin to Joseph Crusel. Can you guess why we are here?”
Dr. Gordon shook his head, “no. I honestly can’t. Please come inside and explain well everything.” They entered slowly, Trey first with Gibb just behind him. “Um… Trey? You say Taryn White was your sister?”
“Yes. But at the time of her death I was only a year, if that.”
“So you don’t remember her?”
“No, just what my parents have told me. Is it true that she overdosed?”
Pause.
“No.”
Trey nodded. “Freddy.”
“Wow. What can I do to help?”
“Do you think that the dream warriors’ powers were genetic?”
“Genetic? Like their parents had it, and so on?”
“Something like that. See, I can do things in my dreams.”
“Like your sister?”
“Time out. What the hell are you guys talking about?”
The two looked at each other, Gibb, then back again. “Well, let’s take a seat.”
“I need a drink” she said, following him to the front room.
