summary-The events of the films have occured and we pick up where "At World's End" leaves off.
The Queen's Ransom, flagship of Shipwreck Cove's supply fleet was sailing on clear waters one balmy afternoon. The crew worked, joking among themselves as they went about their duties. All was well with the world for these hearty pirates. In the Captain's quarters, the Captain of the Queen's Ransom was going over a cargo list and reviewing the course set for the last pick up they had to make before returning home again to Shipwreck Cove.
Her fingers were tan and nimble as she checked off the stock with an old fashioned quill and inkpot. In her quarters, the Captain wore simple skirts with a white blouse under a dark green vest. Her hair was bound out of her face with a white bandanna, thick auburn braids trailed around her face, her eyes were lined with kohl to protect them from the sun's glare. Her face was tanned from the sun and sea and a thin scar ran down her left cheek to the corner of her mouth, a badge of honor she wore proudly from a battle at sea. Beneath her shirt was a series of tattoos. One bore a circle like the sun with 9 points, a point for each Pirate Lord, in the middle was a key. This was the most recent she'd acquired, it symbolized that she, Jill Wright, was the successor to the Keeper of the Code. 10 years had passed and she rarely thought about the days when she'd first began anymore. The fact that her true last name was not Wright at all was something that she'd almost forgotten in all that time. Teague was proud of her, that was what mattered.
"Captain! There's storm clouds to the east, should we alter course?" her first mate, Mister Dobbs asked, poking his head in her door.
Jill looked up from the lists and grumbled, "In a moment Dobbs, I'm almost finished. I'll join you at the helm."
She waved him away and once the door was closed she heard a clicking sound and spun around to see what it was. A crab scuttled across the floor into the shadows near her bed and from behind the screen stepped, Tia Dalma. Jill's jaw dropped. The soothsayer had not changed at all, but Jill knew full well that Tia Dalma was no human woman at all. She'd heard the news from the Cove, Tia Dalma was Calypso, Goddess of the Sea. Jill blinked and felt a burning on her upper arm as Calypso's eyes bore down on her.
"De time has come Jill, you owe me a service." Calypso said, blinking slowly.
"Aye, what would you wish of me?" Jill stammered, too nervous to rise from her chair. Calypso walked toward her, clothed in seaweed and shells.
"You are to ride de storm, it will take you to a man who has answers for you. My mark will burn again when you know what I want you to do." she said cryptically.
"Ride the storm? but..what is it I'm supposed to do?" Jill asked, unable to move under the Goddess's gaze.
"My anger is stirred, I am offended, you are to dispense justice against the one who has wronged my favored son." Calypso nodded and reached Jill, she placed a hand on Jill's shoulder, "Do not fear, Angelina. Your time to shine has come and you will fulfill your destiny. I will be beside you."
Jill closed her eyes, the touch of the Goddess made her lightheaded, she nodded and when she opened her eyes again, Calypso was gone. Jill stood quickly and threw on her coat and hat, running for the helm. To the east the storm clouds grew black and thick. The crew looked to their Captain as she took the helm.
"Ready those sails lads! Tie those guns down tight and secure the cargo, we're not outrunnin' this one." Jill commanded.
Dobbs at her shoulder frowned, "You're going to get us killed, look at that storm."
Jill looked up at him and frowned back, "We'll be fine, trust me. When have I ever steered you wrong?"
Dobbs muttered and moved down among the crew, barking orders as the storm rushed at them faster than any storm any of the crew had ever seen before. It rained and hailed and the wind tore at the sails, making them flutter and rattle.
"Don't tie them up, let them fly!" Jill cried out, letting go of the helm and letting the ship turn with the wind, ropes flew as the sails caught the wind and the ship jerked forward! Waves crashed on either side as lightning flashed around them. The rain came down harder and harder, the ship begain to rock with the force of the waves. Jill's hands were steady on the helm as she guided the ship thru the swells.
"Captain! We can't take much more of this!" Dobbs growled at her after nearly an hour of the pummeling rain. Jill narrowed her eyes at him.
"Mister Dobbs, This ship will be fine. She's not done with me yet." Jill glared up at him. Dobbs reached for the helm and pulled.
"Teague is a fool to let a stubborn wench like you Captain this ship! Steer us out of this storm before you get us all killed!"
"I'll see you dead for insulting my Father like that! Let go!" Jill snarled, wrenching at the helm. Below on deck a small cannon broke loose and rolled across the deck, smashing into a railing. The men below were barely able to catch it with lines before it broke the railing and went overboard.
"Look what you've done!" Dobbs growled, still pulling at the wheel.
"You dare to question me? Murphy! McDonald! take Mister Dobbs to the brig!" Jill shouted over the roar of the storm. 2 crewmen jumped to her orders and dragged Mr. Dobbs from the helm.
"You bitch! You can't do this!" Dobbs cursed as they carried him down the steps.
"Oh but I can, you see..I'm Captain Jill Wright, and you, my mutinous friend..are fired." Jill made a face at him and corrected the course again, the wind continued to howl around them. Rain stung her face. The quartermaster, a stern large woman named Mary O'Dell came to her with a nod.
"Captain, do you even know where we're going?" Mary asked.
"We're going where Calypso wants us to go. That's all you need to know." Jill said. She'd known Mary for 6 years now and Mary trusted her well and knew of the mark on Jill's arm. Mary nodded again and moved back down among the crew, reassuring them quietly.
The night wore on and hours later, the storm began to lessen. Jill's arms were sore and her hands blistered. Many of the crew had gone below to rest. She remained at the helm, watching the compass. Mary had gone below to check the course and returned, near daylight.
"Captain..if my figuring is right, we'll be seeing Tortuga's coast by dawn."
"Tortuga? I should have known...pick 6 to stay above, the rest get some sleep. the 6 will get shore leave while the rest make repairs and load the cargo...I'll be going ashore to find someone.." Jill yawned.
"Very well Captain, as you wish." Mary smiled and took the helm as Jill went down below decks herself.
Meanwhile in Tortuga,..
Mr. Gibbs having been left behind by Jack, was getting some rest, or rather sleeping off a roaring drunk in an Inn called The Faithful Bride. A redhaired whore slept beside him, both were snoring softly as a tiny crab scuttled under the door of the room and across the floor. Mr. Gibb's right foot hung off the bed just within reach of the tiny crab which reached up and pinched him on the toe. Gibbs jolted awake and kicked at the pinching thing, his eyes bleary.
"What the? ow..blast it all.." Gibbs grumbled. The whore barely stirred but the door eased open quietly and Gibbs blinked looking over at it. In the doorway stood a woman he recognized all too quickly. Tia Dalma's familiar face smiled softly at him.
"Come wit' me sailor, it is time you sought the sea again.." She said and motioned for him.
Gibbs being a superstitious man, leapt from the bed as fast as he could considering his hangover and threw his shirt and vest on, shoving his feet in his boots. He left a few shillings on the bedside table and followed Tia Dalma without a word until they were going down the stairs.
"Ma'am, didn't expect to see you again,.." he murmured respectfully. He'd seen her transform into a giant heathen goddess not long ago and was well aware of her power.
"I am most upset Mistah Gibbs. Barbossa was not meant to betray Jack again, but it has happened and this must be corrected. You know what Jack risked to have dat ship in his possession an' even tho Davy Jones is gone, the deal should be upheld. The Pearl is rightfully his and Barbossa should be rightfully dead. You should never have let Jack leave on his own." Calypso said softly as they left the Inn and went out into the streets, the light of dawn fading into early morning. From the hill where they stood, they could both see a couple of ships coming into the harbor. Calypso paused and touched Gibb's arm.
"Down dere, the one on de left, dat's the ship you need Joshamee." She said and leaned to whisper in his ear, "Save de woman."
The whisper made Gibbs shiver and then Calypso was gone. Gibbs looked all around, could not see her. He frowned a little, furrowing his brows. He lifted his flask and took a sip of rum, then set out towards the harbor. He was NOT going to question the orders of a Heathen Goddess, no way.
Back on The Queen's Ransom...
"Moor 'er in nice and tight lads, we'll be unloadin a few things, get that gangplank settled.." Mary O'Dell barked orders on deck as the ship was tied off at the dock.
Below deck, Mr. Dobbs was being freed from the brig and brought up to deck. He was green in the gills from the rough ride. He'd never forgiven Jill for breaking his nose all those years ago, but had sailed with her anyway, secretly hoping to lead a mutiny against the upstart female, but his luck never held and her crew was too faithful. Now he glared at his captors as he was brought before her.
Jill had a few hours of sleep and had dressed in dry clothes. Black trousers that fit her well, tall black boots, a long white shirt that laced at the neck with another dark green vest. Her belts and a blue sash completed her attire this morning. She stepped from her room onto the deck.
"Perhaps I was rash Mr. Dobbs. I don't want you dead, I just want you off my ship. Therefore you will take permanent shoreleave here in Tortuga and I wish you luck on finding a Captain and ship that will better suit you." Jill said with a little bow, heading for the gangplank. She had a mission after all.
"You're soft and not a worthy Captain at all, I'm GLAD to have leave of you.." Dobbs growled.
Jill ignored him, stepping aside to let some of the crew head down the plank ahead of her with boxes. Dobbs watched her and his eyes narrowed, she was close enough to the damaged railing! He moved quickly, too quickly, loosing his arms from his captors and charging at her, swinging a heavy fist.
It all happened too quick! Jill barely heard the shouts of the crew in time to turn, but not in time to dodge the punch which rocked her head back, she saw stars, her legs hit the side and she barely heard the crack before..
"AAAAAAHHHHHH!" she screamed as she fell over, gasping in a breath just before she hit the water between the boat and the dock!
Mr. Gibbs had made it to the harbor and was walking down the docks towards the ship Calypso had indicated, muttering to himself, "Save the woman..what woman?" he'd just got done muttering when he looked up and heard raised voices, and someone going over a broken railing.
"Captain!" someone above shouted as a woman's scream filled the air and a heavy splash was heard.
Gibbs shoved his way past a pair of men and dove off into the water, nearly hitting his head on the side of the ship. It was a miracle she hadn't! The water was murky from the recent storm and Gibbs struggled to see where she'd gotten to.
Jill had hit the cold morning water and fought to keep her mouth closed, to hold her breath and fight to the surface again. Her guns and sword weighed at her hips and the eddies of the tide pushed and pulled at her. Which way was up? She was still dazed from the punch. She felt a hand close around her wrist and blinked in the murk. Someone had hold of her and was pulling at her.
Gibbs hand closed around a thin wrist. He grasped tightly, pulling the body upwards and pulling himself down. He needed a better hold on her to get her up. She was kicking and trying to help. It took a moment, but he got a firm hold around her middle and kicked upwards. They surfaced under the dock, both gasping for air. Above them they could hear her crew moving about, one man cursing as he was being hauled away. Jill coughed and shouted from below the boards.
"Have him arrested! I want that feckless ingrate in irons!" Jill flung an arm around Gibb's shoulder and finally afforded him a smile. "Thank you sailor." she said.
"Not a problem Lass. Nothin' any decent fella wouldn't do. c'mon let's get you back on yer ship." Gibbs said and helped her swim to the shallows out from under the dock. They made their way to the docks again, both of them dripping from head to toe. Gibbs took a good look at the young woman and noted she was fair and strong and a redhead. He liked redheads. And she was the Captain of this ship. He watched her quietly as she moved among her crew, something about the way she moved, the way she spoke. It all reminded him of someone.
"I'll need to change again before I go looking,..feckin' Dobbs. Now I need a new First Mate and a change of clothes.." Jill was muttering, rubbing at her eye and wincing.
"Pardon me Lass,..er..Captain. Did I hear you say yer in need of a First Mate? I have years of experience at sea and I'm in the market for a new ship ter sail with." Gibbs stepped up beside her with a little salute.
Jill looked up at him at the bottom of the gangplank, she looked him up and down, an old salty sailor..that had saved her life. She smiled and nodded, "Aye, come with me, we'll speak on it while I change." She headed up the gangplank back aboard the ship. Gibbs followed behind.
"Er, I don't think it proper fer me to watch ye bein' changed, I can wait.."
"Nonsense, I have a screen. You can stand at the door of my chambers looking out and we can still hear each other." she said with a dismissive little gesture, shaking water out of her hair as she made her way to her chambers.
Gibbs shrugged and nodded, "Aye Captain."
Jill went behind a carved wooden screen and began changing as she spoke, "Now then, we should introduce ourselves eh? This is The Queen's Ransom, flagship of the supply fleet for The Cove, and I am her Captain. Jill Wright, at your service Mr..."
"Gibbs. Mr. Gibbs. Pleasure to meet you Lass, er..Captain. I've been to the Cove a few times before. Is that where you're from?" he asked, unsure what to talk about with a woman who was changing clothes behind a screen.
"Sort of, it's been my home the last 10 years. As I recall I was from Wales before that..or something. Hard to remember, things get a bit fuzzy. You said you had experience, tell me about that. Who have you sailed with?" Jill asked as she wrung water from her hair before putting on a dry fresh shirt.
"I spent 15 years with the Royal English Navy, b'fore I jumped ship and went Pirate. From there I served on bootlegger crews until I met the grandest Pirate of all the Carribbean, Jack Sparrow his own self." Gibbs said with a grin as he watched out the door and could see the horizon over the deck.
Jill's eyes went wide and she dressed faster, "You've met Jack Sparrow? You sailed with him on the Pearl?"
"Aye Captain, finest man I ever sailed for. We'd be sailin' together now if Barbossa hadn't stolen the Pearl again. You know Jack?" Gibbs replied.
Jill felt a burning on her arm and touched it thru her sleeve, fastening her belts around her hips, she peered around the screen, "Of course I know him. Hector Barbossa has the Pearl again? Where's Jack now?"
Gibbs turned his head to look at her as she stepped out from behind the screen, fully dressed again, her hair still wet and laying on her shoulders, her dark eyes narrowed, the kohl around them still thick and in place. "Aye, Barbossa left us both stranded here in Tortuga when he took off with the Pearl again. But he'll be back once he figures out that Jack has the map.."
"Is he here? Jack Sparrow, is he here in Tortuga?" Jill asked, crossing the room quickly to lay her hand on Gibb's arm.
"No, he sailed from here a couple days ago in a dingy. Dead set on gettin' somewhere on his own. You act like you know Jack, missy, ya mind tellin' me how you know him? I knew him for years and he never mentioned a pretty thing like you bein' back in the Cove.."
Jill blinked and stepped back, smoothing her clothes down with a proud look on her face, "Should have known he'd forget me,..it's been 10 years since he saved my life and set me on the path to be a Pirate..We can't leave right away, sit Mr. Gibbs. You're hired by the way,.." Jill motioned to her table and walked around to sit in her chair, gesturing to one near it for him. She took down a bottle of rum and a couple of oranges from a hanging basket, tossing one to Gibbs. "Breakfast Mr. Gibbs,..now..since you want to know, 10 years ago I was on a ship entering the Carribbean when we were attacked in the dead of night by Barbossa and his cursed crew. Everyone on the ship was killed, except me. They even killed my mother.." Jill paused and poured them each a wooden mug of rum. "I survived by being well hidden. They never knew I was there. 5 days on a derelict ship with nothin' but a parrot for company when I saw white sails. A Rumrunner's rig and Jack Sparrow. He took me aboard, protected me, taught me all he could..and it was on his advice, and Calypso's of course, that I went to Shipwreck Cove and learned the Code. So here I am,.." She gestured grandly at the room with a slow smile, her dark eyes twinkling.
Gibbs had listened carefully and was doing math in his head, "10 years ago you say,..you an' your mother were on a ship..where was your father lass?"
"Never knew, my mum only said he'd been in the Navy and we were goin' to find him." Jill shrugged, taking a bite of her orange.
"Is that your real name? Jill Wright?" Gibbs asked, his face going pale and his eyes wide as he stared at the girl, his heart pounding.
"No, that's the name Jack gave me when he saved me. It's Angelina." Jill replied, having not looked up.
Gibbs swallowed hard. All those years at sea away from his family, he'd gotten a letter from his estranged wife, he'd stopped sending money home, too busy spending it on rum. His daughter was growing up without him, she was coming to Port Royal to find him. Then the news that the ship had vanished without a trace. Lost at sea, his wife and his young daughter. He had no one to provide for anymore, what was the use of remaining in the navy? He took a shaky breath and thought it too good to be true. His daughter alive, grown up, a pirate captain...
"Angelina,.." Gibbs breathed, it had been his daughter's name!
