Chapter Four: Vacation’s All I Ever Wanted, Part One
***
Ryan, Troy, Sharpay and Chad stood in the line to have their tickets read to get on the plane traveling to New Zealand. The four handed their tickets to the attendant and boarded the plane. Mr. and Mrs. Evans had treated the kids to flying first class. Ryan and Troy were up towards the front of the first class area while Chad and Sharpay were further back.
“Are you stoked?” Troy asked Ryan, “I know I am.”
“Yeah,” Ryan laced his fingers with Troy’s. “I really am glad you are here with me.”
“I am too,” Troy said. “I love you. Thank you so much for bringing me with you.”
“I love you too,” Ryan said.
***
“Look at them,” Sharpay said with her arms folded. “How can they be so happy? Everyone in here is judging them. Everyone at school is too!”
“They just love being together,” Chad sighed. “They don’t care what other people think. That’s what happens when you’re in love I guess.”
Sharpay turned to Chad. “Are you happy with me?”
Chad looked back at Ryan and Troy. Then to Sharpay.
“I am,” Chad said.
“Fabulous,” Sharpay said. “We are going to have such a good time.”
“Yeah,” Chad said, half meaning it. Sharpay laid her head on his shoulder.
***
After many hours of flight the plane finally landed and the four were off into the streets of New Zealand. A cab took them to their hotel and they checked in. In the room, Sharpay staked claim on the bigger of the two rooms. Ryan and Troy headed into the smaller of the two rooms in their suite and threw their bags to the ground.
“This is the nicest hotel I’ve ever been to,” Troy said. “Wow.”
“Five star,” Ryan said. “Only the best. That’s what dad always says.”
“You’re dad is so right,” Troy said. “I could definitely get used to a place like this.”
“Well,” Ryan said. “You can for a week. That’s how long we get to be here.”
“God I am so tired,” Troy said, a yawn coming about. “I hate being jet-lagged.”
“Well,” Ryan said. “We have this king sized bed. We can take a nap.”
“Sounds like a plan,” Troy said falling back onto the bed. “Care to join?”
“Yes,” Ryan jumped on the bed.
Troy removed his shirt and pants, leaving himself only in his boxers. Ryan did the same. Ryan was left in his boxer briefs.
“Boxer briefs?” Troy said, “Sexy.”
Ryan laughed.
“Let’s have a good time Troy,” Ryan said. “Let’s let whatever happens happen. Sound good? Because when we get back to school, we start working on the musical hardcore.”
“Yeah,” Troy said putting his arm around Ryan and kissing the top of his head. “Let’s not worry about the musical now. Right now, for this week, it’s just you and me.”
Ryan wrapped his arms around Troy and rested his head on his chest. One of Ryan’s legs was overlapping one of Troy’s legs.
***
The sun of the next morning shined brightly through the opened curtains in Troy and Ryan’s room. Troy awoke, he was alone. He looked around, wondering where Ryan was. He put a pair of gym shorts on and headed into the common area of their suite. Chad was sitting at the counter of the kitchen on a stool. He was eating some toast. Troy sat down next to him.
“Mornin’ bro,” Troy said.
“Hey Dawg,” Chad smiled. “What’s up?”
“Not much,” Troy let out a big yawn. “I’m just tired. I hate being jet-lagged.”
“Ditto,” Chad said. “You should make yourself some toast. It will give you a little energy.”
Troy shrugged and got up. He headed around to the other side of the counter and took two slices of bread and put them in the toaster.
“So Chad,” Troy said turning to face Chad. “Are you really happy with Sharpay?”
Chad hesitated. He did not want Sharpay to hear. But he concluded that she wouldn’t be able to because she was in the shower. He shook his head.
“I can tell,” Troy said. “But if you’re not happy with her then why not break up with her?”
“Have you met Sharpay?” Chad asked, “She would probably poke my eye out with her stiletto heel.”
“That’s true,” Troy said.
“Troy,” Chad said. “Can I tell you something?”
“Um,” Troy said. “Yeah man. You know you can tell me anything.”
“There’s another reason I’m not happy with Sharpay,” Chad said.
“Really?” Troy asked. “Why’s that?”
“I’m,” Chad hesitated then sighed. “I’m gay.”
Troy’s eyes widened. He remained silent.
“Troy?” Chad hit his arm, “You in there?”
“Yeah,” Troy said. “But I mean wow. You’re gay? Really?”
“Yeah,” Chad sighed. “I have been trying to deny it for months now. Many long months.”
“Okay,” Troy said. “I mean. It’s really good that you feel comfortable enough to tell me.”
“That’s not all,” Chad said.
Troy raised his eyebrows.
“Over the summer,” Chad said. “Over the summer I—”
The door flew open and Sharpay came out wrapped in a pink towel.
“Baby,” she said. “Have you seen my hairspray? I need to look fabulous.”
“I’ll tell you later,” Chad sighed and got up to look for Sharpay’s hairspray.

The four hit the beach later that day. Luckily their hotel overlooked a large area of beach and ocean. Many people were out, it was a hot day. Sharpay laid her towel on the ground next to Chad’s. Troy and Ryan laid there’s down side-by-side as well.
“Baby,” Sharpay said. “Will you rub sunscreen on my back?”
Chad squirted a glob of white sunscreen onto his hand and began rubbing it across Sharpay’s bare back.
“That’s a good idea,” Troy said. “You are way to pale to not have sunscreen on Ry.”
“Hey!” Ryan pouted, “That’s not very nice.”
“Well fine,” Troy giggled. “Then I won’t rub my big hands all over your.”
“On second thought,” Ryan turned onto his stomach. “Go ahead.”
Troy grabbed the bottle and squirted the sunscreen onto his hands. He began rubbing the cold cream onto Ryan’s very light back. The cool touch caused Ryan to flinch but soon he became accustomed to the touch. Ryan let out a moan. Chad’s eyes widened.
“Well Ry,” Troy said. “You’re all sun protected now.”
“Thanks,” Ryan leaned up to kiss Troy.
“You two disgust me,” Sharpay said.
“Why?” Troy turned and said, “Because we are in love?”
“No,” Sharpay said. “Because you guys are so comfortable with it. Even straight high school couples are nervous about public displays of affection.”
“Whatever,” Troy said. “Don’t be jealous because we are actually happy.”
“I’m happy,” Sharpay said.
“Yeah sure,” Troy laughed. “Or you are just really good at acting like it. But then again, you are a good actress. I’d say second best at East High.”
“UH!” Sharpay got up and stomped of, “CHAD!”
Chad glared at Troy. Then got up and followed her.
“That was a little mean,” Ryan said. “Do you have to say things like that to my sister?”
“Nah,” Troy laughed. “I was just messin’ around babe. I can’t help it that your sister is such a drama queen.”
“I guess,” Ryan sighed.
“Come on,” Troy said. “Let’s go run around in the ocean.”
Troy got up and offered his hand. He pulled Ryan up and the two ran for the ocean.
***
Ryan was thoroughly beat from running around the beach with Troy the day before. Troy left him asleep in the hotel suite while he went to find a place for their anniversary dinner which would be happening later that night. Sharpay went with him because Chad was not waking up anytime soon.
“I am sorry,” Troy said as they walked. “It was just a joke.”
“Don’t try and flatter me Troy,” Sharpay said. “I am way over you anyways. If you want to know what Ryan likes here it is.”
Sharpay stopped in front of a seafood restaurant down the street.
“Ryan likes seafood?” Troy asked.
“Yeah he does,” Sharpay said. “I’m surprised you don’t know. I thought you loved him.”
“I do Sharpay,” Troy said. “Stop questioning that okay!”
“Geese,” Sharpay said. “Take a pill.”
Troy sighed.
***
Ryan woke up in the bed alone. He was in only his boxer briefs. He took the silence of the suite to mean that he was alone. He got up and walked into the common area.
“Hello?” Ryan yelled trying to see if anyone was there.
“What?” Chad yelled from his and Sharpay’s room.
“Chad?” Ryan said, “Are you here?”
Chad opened the door of his room. He was in his boxers.
“Yes I am,” Chad said walking towards Ryan. “Duh. Where is everyone?”
“I don’t know,” Ryan said. “Sharpay isn’t here?”
“Nope,” Chad said.
“That’s weird,” Ryan said. “Troy’s probably out planning our three month festivities.”
“Makes sense,” Chad said. “Maybe Sharpay is with him.”
“Maybe,” Ryan sat down on the couch. Chad sat next to him.
“Chad,” Ryan said.
“Yeah?” Chad asked.
“Are we okay?” Ryan asked, “I feel a little bad for they way I treated you the other day. I didn’t mean to be so rude.”
“Hey,” Chad said. “Don’t worry about it. I was very out of place doing that.”
“But you were just being honest,” Ryan said. “And to be honest, if I had known you were going to end up wanting a relationship I would never have started one with Troy.”
Chad’s eyes widened.
“I really like you Chad,” Ryan said.
“I like you too,” Chad smiled.
Ryan leaned in and kissed Chad. Chad’s eyes widened more. He pulled back.
“Not that that wasn’t awesome,” Chad said. “But what about Sharpay and Troy?”
“I’m not sure if our relationship would ever work,” Ryan said. “But I’m willing to find out.”
“Again,” Chad said. “What about Troy?”
“I’m not going to break up with him,” Ryan said. “But, I am willing to be with you behind closed doors. Where he and other people can’t find out.”
“I know I made it appear that I wanted that the other day,” Chad said. “But what happens if you decide you want me more?”
“I’ll decide when we get there,” Ryan said. “Look, I’m just taking you up on your offer. If you don’t want to give us a shot again, then we won’t.”
Chad sighed. He leaned back in and kissed Ryan.
