Part 4
Shilo woke up to being shoved out of bed, hitting the floor. “What the hell?” she groaned, standing up and forgetting completely about being naked.
Amber, taking up as much of the bed as possible, looked up at her. “What are you doing here?”
“You invited me?” She went over to the wardrobe to find her dress, pulling it on quickly. “And then tried to molest me.”
“I’m sure you enjoyed it,” Amber spat. “You’ll have to excuse me. I have a press conference to attend.”
“I’m going home,” Shilo said. “I don’t want to deal with you.”
“Fine.” Amber got up, adjusting the straps of her dress. “Go back to the ghosts of your dead parents and rot away. You could never cut it in my world anyway. You’re too,” and she gave Shilo a disparaging look. “Pure.”
“Like that’s a bad thing,” Shilo muttered, slipping into her shoes.
“It’s weak. You’re weak. When I was seventeen I’d already changed my face and my name. I made myself up to be exactly what I wanted. I had power. Fame, money, lovers. You can have all of that too, if you stick with me.”
“No thanks.”
“Nice knowing you.” Amber gave her a bright, almost friendly smile, and left the room.

Once she was dressed Shilo couldn’t get out of the Largo’s mansion fast enough. There was no car waiting for her when she got out the door and she knew that in rejecting Amber’s offer, she was rejecting everything.
< I don’t need them anyway. > Shilo set out on foot, using the giant floating billboard as a landmark to find her way back home. After only a few blocks her feet hurt from walking in her high heeled shoes, but she hated the idea of taking them off. The cracked sidewalks were covered in broken glass and refuse. The nice neighborhood of the Largo mansion had given away to the slums very quickly.
She was hungry too, very hungry as the hours drew on and she didn’t seem to be getting any closer to home. She passed by stores, but she didn’t have any money. She didn’t know how to get money, she realized. She knew about banks and checking accounts, but she had no clue where or how to get her father’s money. Eventually she would run out of food in the house and she didn’t know how to get more.
< Thanks Dad. > Her thoughts turned bitter as she stumbled along. The giant billboard was broadcasting Amber Sweet’s press conference. She looked confident and sure of herself as she announced that she was taking over the company. < Why can’t I be like that? > Shilo wondered, feeling like she was going to cry. She was lost somewhere downtown, with no friends, no money, no nothing.
She tripped on a crack in the sidewalk and fell forward, sprawling across the ground. I can’t do this. I just cant. A grubby hand grabbed onto her arm and pulled her to her feet. “Thank you,” she said, not looking up, but when she pulled away the hand only grasped tighter. Shilo looked up and saw the Grave Robber. “Oh,” she said, relaxing. “It’s just you.”
“Kid, what are you doing out here?”
“Trying to find my way home.”
He rolled his eyes at her. “I was heading in that direction anyway. Come on.” He let go of her arm and she followed him, grateful. At least she had one friend. He turned around and saw her limping. With a sigh he scooped her up into his arms.
She froze at first, but then relaxed. “Thank you,” she said, burying her face in his coat. “Everything is all wrong.”
“Yeah, I’ve seen the news. Kid, you don’t weigh anything. Are you okay?”
“No,” she admitted.

As it turned out she was only a few blocks from home, and the Grave Robber set her down in front of her gate. “Thank you,” she said. “It’s been a long day.”
“You’ve had a tough time of things,” he offered. “Do you need something to take the edge off?” He opened his coat to reveal the blue glow of a Zydrate gun.
She looked at him curiously. “Do you take Zydrate?”
He shook his head. “No—I won’t touch the stuff.”
“Then why are you offering it to me?”
“Because I’m a dealer.” He gave her a look that was a mix of exasperation and pity, and strutted off into the graveyard next to the house. < So much for friends… > Shilo opened the gates and went inside.
