Tender Mercy

Jane ran into the sleeping chamber and threw herself onto the bed.  She scolded herself for letting her emotions get the better of her, but nevertheless found it hard not to weep.  I’m so stupid, she thought.  How could she have thought that an honest-to-goodness GOD would ever fall for someone like her?  She imagined Thor and Sif together and the thought tore at her heart.  Of course they should be together, she thought.  How could some geeky astrophysicist ever hope to compete with Xena, Warrior Princess?  She should never have built the portal in the first place.

But that last thought shook Jane out of her self-imposed pity party.  She hadn’t constructed a portal to another dimension just so she could see Thor again!  It was an incredible scientific achievement, one with incalculable effects on the human condition.  And yet...

She hadn’t built the portal just to see her hunky would-be beau again, but Jane had to be honest with herself.  She knew that one of the reasons she had been so driven in this project was the thought of reuniting with Thor.  It was a silly and romantic notion...but it was absolutely a crucial factor in pushing ahead with it.  The construction of the portal had become her life, but now, having completed it and taken the journey to a distant dimension, filled with unimaginable scientific wonders...somehow, her biggest concern was losing a guy to some other woman.  It would be merely embarrassing, except for the fact that it was true.

She knew Sif was a beautiful woman, but she was also Thor’s equal in combat.  Jane could never hope to compete with that – another Asgardian, someone who had grown up with Thor and knew his world.  Jane, by contrast, was a complete stranger here.  She didn’t belong in Asgard.  Maybe Sif had done her a favour: by pointing out the obvious, she was showing Jane the way back to where she belonged...

Suddenly, the door burst open.  Jane turned around to see Thor hauling Sif by the arm.  She was too shocked to say anything.  But they seemed to be expecting that reaction.

Thor thrust his companion forward and boomed, “Sif has something she would like to say to you.”

Sif shot a perturbed glance at Thor, but when she looked at Jane their eyes locked and Sif’s hard stare seemed to soften.  The poor woman looked so frightened, so out of place...to her surprise, Sif felt more like comforting her than attacking her as a romantic rival. The words Thor had made her promise to speak now came out far more honestly and sincerely than she had originally planned:

“I’m sorry, Jane,” began Sif.  “I didn’t mean what I said.  I was jealous of your relationship with Thor, but I was wrong to speak my feelings so bluntly.  It’s obvious that Thor cares deeply for you and I had no right to interfere.  Please accept my apologies.”

Jane was equally surprised to find herself smiling and laying a hand on Sif’s shoulder.  “It’s alright,” she said.  “I understand.  You two really do have a lot in common.  I shouldn’t get in the way...”

Thor stepped forward.  “Jane, what are you saying?  You know my feelings for you.”

Sif also looked worried.  “Please, Jane, accept when I say that I was wrong to speak my thoughts in the manner I did...”

Jane cut her off.  “But they were your thoughts, weren’t they?”

Sif was silent and looked at her feet, betraying a clear sense of guilt and shame.

A wave of caring swept over Jane, and she suddenly the need to comfort Sif.  “It’s okay,” she said, embracing Sif and stroking her hair.  “I understand...we all make mistakes sometimes.”

Sif held Jane tightly, astonished at the degree to which she wished to melt into the other woman’s arms and accept her tender mercy.  There was something special about Jane.  She wiped a tear from her eye and looked at Jane.  Jane looked at Sif and kissed her gently on the cheek.

And then, gazing into the other woman’s eyes, Sif kissed Jane on the mouth.

It was short at first, a gesture of friendship more than anything else.  But the sensation of healing fresh emotional wounds was addictive.  Sif kissed Jane again, and this time Jane reciprocated with a deep, open-mouthed kiss in return.  The two women released their mutual frustration on each other, their tongues exploring each other’s mouths as they embraced while Thor looked on in shock.

What began as emotional healing slowly started to transform into carnal curiosity, and then lust.  Jane and Sif enjoyed the feeling of kissing and licking each other, feeling the curves of each other’s bodies, and turned on by the fact that they were doing it in front of a man they both had strong feelings for.   They made out for a few minutes, each feeling the secret thrill of putting on a show for the handsome Thor.  Finally they released themselves from the kiss, feeling the flush of passion at transgressing boundaries.  Sif cradled Jane’s head and spoke softly into her ear:

“I think our friend is getting a little excited watching.”

Jane looked up.  Thor was staring intently at the two women, his jaw practically on the floor.  It seemed to take him a while to compose himself.

Jane smiled and kissed Sif again.  “Maybe we should ask him to join in.”

Thor grinned and stepped towards the two ladies.  “I thought you’d never ask.”
